LZX archive Grim Rips
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Hi all,
I tried searching LZX here before asking. If the question has been answered, please drop a link.
The Aminet program -- LZX v1.21r by Jonathan Forbes doesn't work anymore. I get 'Grim Rips :-/ ' trying to make archives. Anyone know why? ISTR it worked fine in OS4'final'. I use 'Cranu' and that reminded to ask...

Hi, just tried LZX from shell and no problems it creates archives without a GR. Maybe is Cranu broken?

#lzx a ddd #?

No, Cranu 1.0 is not broken; it's just a GUI.

Your testing is all invalid; you didn't do anything.
#lzx a ddd #?
What's that mean?

The LZX program is old and behind the times. We want to arch recursively directories for backups. Examples:
cd sys:>utilities
lzx -r a ram:SGrab.lzx SGrab/*
This will work, but... this won't:
cd sys:>system ; ( I keep Orgins's Filer here)
lzx -r a ram:Filer.lzx Filer/*
.....GrimReaper
This was the latest Filer -- 53.31

Orgin or Peter Gordon or Chris Young,
Can you explain why Filer fails to arched into LZX?
I took the tool 'Filer' by itself( no directories) and it won't arch. :-/ Was LZX designed just 68K code?

LZX is old and not supported by it's author anymore, and also it's closedsource so there's no chance of anyone else picking it up either. Better use LHA (which has slightly worse compression but at least exists as OS4 native) or 7zip (exists as OS4 native and probably has much better compression even than LZX) instead.

It's too bad that OS4Depot, Aminet and AROS-Archives still do not allow uploading in .7z format...

This brought back some memories so I ran off to my HD Backup of 120605 and brought up the string from the button SID bank

LZX -a -e -Qf -r -Y -9 af

I've thought in the past of perhaps contacting chap to release either the code or compile a newer version...

Heck, If I knew where Timm Martin was I'd ask him to release SID2.0 as well... since there are graphic glitches if you use it on OS4.x upwards...

Thought so. Thanks for confirming my suspicions! I forgot that LZX was custom built program.

Ahhh, '7zip'; totally forgot about that. OK, I going to have to see if that's a good replacement backup tool.

Me too! I would to hear what he thinks of the Amiga evolution since 1995? Maybe Mr. Forbes moved on to probably the Apple world...

I just tried them all 4.16 and 4.42 and they 'Grim' like LZX !
Archiving on my A1 is really bad. Is there anything outside of LHA and Linux that works without Grim Reapers?

The 7za 4.16 version from http://strohmayer.org/ doesn't crash here (just tested it on my ?A1). What is your minimum process stack size set to in DOS prefs? I recommend setting it to about 64 kB at least.

@Snuffy

my stack in shell-startup is 1111111

you could always use tar without compression and then bzip2

it's how I used to archive up my gg installations because tar handled softlinks etc properly and there was an option to unarchive and on the fly convert softlinks to real files...
