Caesar III seems to be one possibilty. Build instructions doesn't look bad, though it seems to require QT4?

OpenCaeasar3 is already on my list, is CaesarIA more complete?
Civilization: CtP2 probably could be ported, but where can I find the sources of the linux port? The rest: no dice.

BTW, have you tried the latest OpenJK if it still stutters?

It turns out that CaesarIA is actually opencaesar3:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/opencaesar3

I've been holding off porting it, because the gameplay is still incomplete compared to the stock game.

No Linux either? I wish I could make an installer for the game, but I have no idea how could I extract the data from LucasArts' 1.01 patch. I don't know if I could legally distribute the one file needed from it (assets3.pk3) by itself. I'll try to cook up something.

edit: Someone have uploaded the all the game data here, you can grab assets3.pk3: http://www.x-raiders.net/download/?file=assets3
He also host the game data from 1.00, but don't blow up his server. You can copy assets0.pk3 to assets2.pk3 from your CD.

edit#2: Installation instructions updated with the above information. You no longer need a Windows/Linux machine to patch the game.

If you feel like a break from porting huge games how about looking a an old 3.1 app called TinyMeter? the source is in the archive. ToAks will be your love slave if you get this ported but don't let that put you off

Can you type "cg_drawfps 1" into the console? If you have less than 10 fps, then there's really not much I can do about the stuttering. I don't plan to increase the size of the audio buffer more, however you can try to increase the value of s_mixahead, that might help.

@Severin
I'm all for having more slaves (of course I have none, they get umm.. paid, yes!). If this app has no OS4 equivalent, and it doesn't run on OS4 already, then sure thing, I can port it. The source looks neat and clean too.

I tried anyway redownlaoded version and can say that:

-- by default sound always cracled. Even if i just lower everuthing in terms of video to low as possible, and exit/run games again.

-- crachling of sound disappear only when i press on sound-quality, and it sets to low or high - does not matter, once i do so, crachling disappear.

-- restarting of game after i press on sound quality give no crackling of sound (but i can see that because sound quality settings auto-saves).

-- crachling happens on any video settnigs (the very-very low ones). Once i set it to high or low, all fine. By default sound quality settings have nothing set in.

@BSzili,

Thanks for the new installation instructions.
I have the game installed and it seems to run quite well. The sound stuttering is an issue for me too.

I have not tried to display FPS yet so cant say if it is <10.

It looks like I might forgot to copy the updated version to my samba shared disk before I uploaded it.
Just to make sure I need the following information from you:
1) The build date. This is not the $VER string, but the date the game display on startup in the CLI window:
Quote:
OpenJK: v1.0.1.1 AmigaOS-ppc /date/

2) The output of the "soundinfo" console command, especially the value of speed and samples.

I just redownload it again, and sizes are now different + new instructions is in, so probably all ok and was maybe some caching issue or something on my setup.

Tried it too, and as far as i can see .. dunno, maybe it even a bit worse now. I mean, before i just was enough to tick on sound quality, and all start to works fine, no crackling. Now, even if i set low , crackling is happens sometime. Imho that all not worth of worry, even previous way (without increased buffers), are fine (and maybe better if i see it right), let's users yourself tweak all what they need.

In whole all looks good anyway. I haven't any freezes, or lockups. I keep play for about 30 minutes non-stop, all fine. No crashes or weirdos. Probably one of those ported big-titles we have on os4 which done good and can be recomented.

There are two different issues here. One was the default sampling rate of 44 KHz, which was solved by changing the sound quality to High = 22 KHz or Low = 11 KHz. I fixed this, it's now 22 KHz by default.
The other is the way too small audio buffer. I might have gone overboard with this one, and increased it's size too much. The larger buffer means more audio mixed ahead of time, but also costs more CPU time. In conclusion making it 8 times bigger might have been too much. This is a hardcoded formula, and not something the user can change, so I better find the "sweet spot" myself.

@all
edit: I halved the size of the audio buffer, please redownload the archive. And please tell me the number of samples "sndinfo" reports in the console.

Tested new version: indeed all is fine by default now. And everything faster too (include in game fps).

Btw, new archive again contain old installation.txt 584 of size , and not 1158 with new info as previous .

edit: game indeed cool. really kind of ghotic2. with lowering everything its pretty playable on peg2/1ghz/radeon9250. Of course when heavy stuff happens on screen, it still slowdowns a bit, but i think its about 25-15fps in whole

One time freezes so reboot is must, but that was when i use all sort of other stuff, and taken in account our 3d implementation i would't worry about.

With autosaves it anyway no big problem :)

Seesh, I keep overwriting new files with old ones. I just fixed a few bugs in the input handler. A couple of keys (F11, F12, grey numpad keys) had bogus mappings, so you couldn't use them. I only noticed this because Quicksave is bound to F12 by default. It's recommended for everyone to download the latest version.
