OS4.1u6 - SAM440ep - RAM Disk suddenly disappeared!
Just popping in

It has happened to me before with a partition icon which i eventually solved back then but i don't quite remember how now. This time it is my RAM Disk icon that disappeared all of a sudden. I was unarchiving an LHA to Ram Disk when i had a system freeze and after the reboot the icon wasn't there. Could somebody explain me what exactly happened and how i can possibly bring my Ram Disk icon back? I have tried copying the respective icon from my Amiga OS4.1 cd but it seems i'm doing it the wrong way, since the system won't permit me to complete the copy. Tried to find some useful clue in Prefs/EnvArc/Sys drawer but with no luck. Not a total newbie with Amiga OS but hey, i'm still learning! Any help appreciated of course!

Do you have ENVARC:Sys/def_RAM.info, and ram-handler.kmod / ramdrive.device.kmod / ramlib.kmod ?

Just before LoadWB in S:Startup-Sequence should be this line:

MakeLink RAM:Disk.info ENVARC:Sys/def_RAM.info SOFT

That line hasn't always been there, so I don't know if it's required.

@MickJT
Nope!

def_RAM.info, and ram-handler.kmod / ramdrive.device.kmod / ramlib.kmod

are missing. Strange enough! Don't know what might have happened but anyway. What do you suggest me to do now? Btw, thanks for your reply.

It sounds like your OS installation has been corrupted.

Check Kicklayout to see which update is actually installed. I wouldn't re-install updates though, because it could cause problems with AmiUpdate not recognizing that some files are older.

Does your Startup-Sequence contain the MakeLink line? If not, check Update 5. But Update 5 only contains the new ramlib.kmod. The other .kmods are from previous updates.

Which .kmods are in your Kicklayout that have to do with the ram drive? On my Sam Flex I have:

MODULE Kickstart/ram-handler.kmod
MODULE Kickstart/ramdrive.device.kmod
MODULE Kickstart/ramlib.kmod

Only this one has anything to do with the normal "RAM Disk".

This one, I believe, is for the RAD: disk.

MODULE Kickstart/ramlib.kmod
And this is a system component which is responsible for loading libraries into memory - nothing to do with a RAM disk at all.

Best regards,

Niels
