What's the best file system for AmigaOS 4.x?

Trying to understand the pros and cons of the various file systems that can be used under AmigaOS 4.

Obviously, correct me If I'm wrong, but the boot partition must be always SFS, right?

Also what about XJFS, is it reliable? Can we use it without any risk?

Is there a comparison table to check all those file systems available?

Are there any other alternatives we can try?

Sorry for the so many questions.

JXFS ought to be the one to go for, but I keep on reading about programs that don't work correctly with it, so I'd have to recommend SFS for the moment. SFS\00 for smaller partitions, and SFS\02 for any huge partitions.

I'm sure someone else can go into details, or you could try searching...

When i install aos4 first time, i just make system partioin as FFS (my bad), all working partitions in SFS , and one little (about 500mb) partition as JFS (and i name it as JFS, just for tests). But those tests was not tests, i just works with it all the time, make all what i want and do not want on it, and looks like JFS pretty stable, fast and can be usable.

Soon i will put new hdd (because 40gb are 100% not enough with all that modern stuff), i will do it like that:

SFS2 - system (because as i know, jfs can't be bootable ? )
JFS - all the working partitions.

I already noticed, that JFS are better than SFS : for example when you will have less than 100mb on SFS, and it will pretty fragmentated because of millions files which you move/update/delete, then it will slow downs a lot, while with JFS you not have any problems, and even if there 5mb are free, everything works as should.

From other side, JFS use CPU a bit more (i think on 5-10% more than SFS) when you do heavy coping. But for my need and fast work i for sure will choice JFS for everythere where it possible.

I know I have allready asked that but what are the maximal size of partition recomanded with:

-SFS
-SFS2
-JFS

Same question when reorganize or reparing with the AOS4 tool, all kind work with the repair/optimize tool ?.

This thread is important because I'm sure pratically all users use SFS or FFS and not look at SFS2 or JFS just because not lots of feedback from users found...

Here 6 partition with SFS used and never try to use more than 60go for a partition..

Partition Limits:
FFS2: 2,2 TB if the blocksize is 512 bytes, more if you use a higher blocksize.
SFS/00: 128 GB
SFS/02: 1 TB * blocksize / 512
JXFS: only joerg knows, but it should play in same class as SFS/02

There are no repair/optimize or other tools for SFS/02 and JXFS.

JXFS is reliable, but until someone updates the SLB, it can't be a boot partition. Incompatibility comes from JXFS not setting the executable flag. Joerg has said that this is an intended feature of JXFS.

I have 4 partitions on my sam.
HD0: SFS0 size=2,7GB
HD1: JFXS size=100,3GB
HD2: SFS02 size=231,5GB
HD3: JFXS size=129,3GB.

All have worked like a charm, without any loss to data for about 3 years now.

Thanks for the replies guyz. I will give JXFS a try in another partition.

My 4 partitions are as follows (for the history):

SYS is SF0/00 and the other three are SFS/02.

I've recently started using JXFS on 3 partitions and seems to work fine for me, changed to be able to run UFOAI game (for some reason doesn't run from SFS partitions).

Each partition has a .recycled drawer which stores deleted files which I find quite handy, would be nice if this were integrated with the OS trashcan system somehow.

2 hard drives, 23 partitions: 3 * SFS0, 10 * JXFS, 1 * DOS\03, 1 * SWAP, 6 * FFS2, 1 * (Linux) LNX + 1 * (Linux) SWP
SFS0 for booting, DOS\03 for classic Amiga stuff to use on EUAE, FFS2 for backups (haven't bothered to change), JXFS for everything everyday usage and productivity usage, plus swaps and one Debian partition. Max. partition size currently used is around 64GB (no room for bigger ones).

Wasn't JXFS the only one supporting some new DOS features like fast directory reading ?

One thing I noticed since installing JXFS is the HD seems much noiser than before, let me know if you notice a similar change? Also wonder if the extra CPU overhead is worth it.

It's worth pointing out that you need to set the blocksize to 512 when you choose JXFS as the filesystem in MediaToolbox, otherwise the drive won't be mounted.

Anyone know what is the best blocksize for SFS\02, noticed my Workbench partiion is 2048, while AmiCygnix is 1024? not if that was by accident or design now.

Its 2010, we should aim for a FUSE based filesystem so we can finally access archived files/isos as drawers.

Or implement a handler or a filesystem plugin to do the job. FFS can use plugins but other Amiga filesystems doesn't unfortunately. Maybe J?rg could add plugin system into JXFS. No need to use alien filesystems.

It depends - is the current Amiga file systems the best for now and future ?

Addons are welcome, anything that makes access transparent as possible is a good thing.

I could do with a user defined flag for a file.

So if I want a flag called 'viewed' or last viewed running length in a video would be cool.

another question should filesystem addons have renaming / online database access capabilities as default ?

Has anyone some experience with solid state disks and these filesystems? JXFS is probably the most likely (of the three) to be developed further.

What's the bloody edge (excuse the pun)? Any example?

I have all 4 SATAs filled

1 DVDRW
1 TB Harddrive 1 partition with JXFS
1 500g Harddrive 1 partition with JXFS
1 350g Harddrive 2 partiton 10g Boot in SFS1 and rest download partition with JXFS

I've been using JXFS for months and before that SFS2 and never had any problems.

I also format with NORECYCLED, I'm not sure if this adds to the stability of the partitions but I think it probably does... if you're afraid of deleting the wrong thing then slow down On occassion I delete the wrong file and even the wrong directory, it's never a major but it is annoying, but I don't care the benefits I think outweight human error...

adios!

As I recall, someone was already working on that. Used xpkmaster.
