OS 4.0 with Debian Linux
Quite a regular

See User information
I want to install Debian Linux on my system but don't
know how.

Do I have to backup my HD or can I install with my OS 4.0
system?

I want to install it basically to run MacOS and other programs too on my Amiga One.

What I have to do to make it happen?

Is it so difficult or dangerous?

Any help or advice will be really appreciated.

My intention isn't to install Linux on another HD, it's just to install on the same.

What are you thinking about it?

All help is appreciated.

Hi @MamePPCA1

I want to install it basically to run MacOS ...

I'm not a Mac expert, I'm not a linux expert, I'm not a MOL expert
I wouldn't even try.

The A1-XE was shipped here over four years ago. It came with Debian
linux 'Woody' installed. I suffered with it for a year and quarter.
When OS4pre was installed, i scrapped linux. I don't need it; don't
want it.

Any help or advice will be really appreciated.

Buy a used Mac; it would be easier on you!

word of warning;

I managed to install debian linux, and mol 9.2, but to be honest, there are too many obstacles on the road to completion. Unless you're a super linux-user, I'm going to guess that you will end up sitting for hours, frustrating hours trying to overcome a simple little problem.

If you have a PC, it's much easier to setup linux on that. And Linux would run 10xtimes better on that than on the old and sluggish PPC A1-C. from my personal experience...

of course, if you're really an incarnated AmigaOne user like me, you will use those hours, and you will get it working...mainly just to realize the dream of being completely independent of a PC.

but if you have access to a PC at home, there's not much reason to install Linux nor Mac.

OK not really my vision cause My Amiga One was originally sent to me with Linux and MacOS on it and after all I get some
really nice experiences with it so...

What the hell if I want to make meat of the Windows erratic and living in hell experience to give my Amiga One to a new level with Amiga OS 4.0,Linux and MacOS installed?

I hope you respected my opinion as I did with yours.

It's my goal and I will put all my efforts to make my dream come true.

Help me and I will be really grateful with you the Amiga
world.

Yeah visited this very nice website time ago an I have downloaded the Debian Linux Install Guide.
It is the same that ASB-Computer send my with the Amiga One
when it came to my home.

I nearly managed to install Debian Linux nearly a year ago,
but does did mean if I try again that I will loose all the hard work I've made on OS 4.0 during last year?

Make it sense to make a backup of the HD or can I reconfigure some partitions to run Linux with OS 4.0?

I hope I can make it someday.

This link helped me probably the most.

I only managed to get MOL working using a pegxmac installation (which is a seperate Knoppix linux distribution that launches directly MOL). There's a torrent of pegxmac for A1 still out there. But several people have it working under Sarge i've noticed.

Good luck.

I have another little question. As I leave my computer
on hands of PC computer repairers they change my hardware configuration so the Floppy disk don't know if it is well connected and the DVD and DVD-RW doesn't appear on 1 and 2
IDE possitions on the U-Boot prompt (they appear on 2 and 3
possitions).

How can I set up my floppy disk,DVD and DVD-RW to appear on the right place?

The DVD units works but the floppy I'm not sure because I try to boot Linux with some disk some time ago and the floppy didn't work.

I introduce this questions cause first is important to
have the devices nice configured and because when last time Linux with OS 4.0 came to me last year,I have to boot from the floppy disk.

So how can I be secure or really connect properly the floppy disk and the DVD units too to have it nicely prepared to the Linux installation?

On the other hand can I install Linux and boot from the HD?
How can I do?

And what about to install it from internet? Is it easy?

Linux and MOL are very important to me.

There is option in UBOOT menu to swap primary and secondary IDE connectors.

Floppy drive most be connected to the end of cable after twist, red edge always facing the power connector side, or pin 1.

In OS4, there is tool to insert and eject disks, because, TonyW did not won?t to destroy any disks read the documents on the OS4 CD.

With the swap IDE controllers on the U-Boot options,
I hope DVD appears on 1 position and DVD-RW on 2 position

I will try it later thanks!

For the floppy disk,on what chapter of the OS 4.0 documentation does it apears?

And is it on the pre-release or on the update 4 CD?

Very helpful indeed.

Sorry but I don't have Final yet.

May be helpful if someone put here a link to the OS 4.0 Final download on Hyperion's page.
I have tried with the code of the pre-release CD several times but cannot register snif.

I think is legal cause I am a registered user of the
Amiga One and OS 4.0.

It will be very helpful and Hyperion doesn't do anything to
give me the pleasure to run OS 4.0 Final as ASB-Computer,my
dealer doesn't too after some e-mails.

I'm fully commited to the cause!

I am very stuck now and I am thinking other ways to do the installation like the Network or on last instance sending the computer to a dealer that can make the work for me.

I have downloaded the Debian 4.0r1-powerpc-netintall ISO.
The question is how can I burn to CD and convert it to dirctories and files as the ISO I don't know how it works directly burned to a CD.Does this version works fine with Amiga One?

I need to get OS 4.0 Final too, have sent some e-mail to hans of Hyperion but don't have answers about this very important chapter.

I am thinking about to delete my Linux partitions and redo it again, what's the best way to get my system up and running with OS 4.0+Debian Linux*MacOSX?

I am lost in the ice.
