DuckDuckGo search in IB?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

See User information
Hi folks,

I've been trying to see if I could come up with a URL for
DuckDuckGo.com which would let me do searches from the
IBrowse search bar...

While I can just go to the site URL, perform searches and
use the results in IB, I haven't had much luck coming up
with a search bar string.

Here's a DDG page where I found some docs:

https://duckduckgo.com/params

And I tried the Mycroft page for their plugins.

Anyone else have any luck along these lines?

Thanks,

PJS

Hey Sev,

Nope, when I just paste that string in the URL line or put
it in a Search config, it just gives me an empty page on
DDG with the search term. No results.

Is that working for you?

Thanks,

Hi Michael,

Unfortunately, that's not working any better for me then
my previous attempts...

When I set up & tried the URL bar search entry with your
string, I end up with a nearly empty page with just a
string field and my query in it, like this:

hmmmm....

@pjs

Try it the simple way: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=amigaos
?q is for query, all the other stuff that comes after that is some sort of formatting the "found links" page.

If that simple thing doesn't work for you, try the https://duckduckgo.com page all by itself.
Search something, click on any item and then retrace to the search page.

In Odyssey you'll get the complete search string displayed, with all the bells and whistles, e.g. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=amigaos&atb=v1&ia=web

But if it doesn't show anything you are probably out of luck with IB.

Hi Stranger!

Yeah, I think I tried all those variants before...

As a simple example, if you paste any of those in the URL
gadget of IB and hit return, you get the incomplete and
empty DDG page I've been getting.

I'm guessing that DDG must be doing some javascript on the
search URL string that isn't happy with IB while if you
just enter the a search string in their webpage it works.

Bummer.

Edit: Just realised this probably can't work from the IBrowse search bar.

If you disable javascript in Firefox it sends a POST request to https://duckduckgo.com/html

When searching for "test" (quotes not included) it sends:

q=test

You should be able to make a local .html file with a simple form in it so IBrowse can generate the required POST request and send it to the right URL.

Hi Petrol and all,

Thanks! Yes, turning off JS did wonders. I created a new
URL prefs entry, turning off JS on DDG and new the URL bar
search entry is working great with this string:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%s&kp=-2

Good stuff.

Thanks again,

PJS
