Have you got a chance to get it fixed?
If yes, where did you send it?

Im having troubles with mine too, it doesnt map any memory. That woudlnt have happen to your's too by any chance would it? Im jumping trough hoops trying to get it up and running.

My Blizzard 1230-II does that....

... but as long as you know the size of the memory installed and the address it's installed at, you can use AddMem to add your RAM directly. Have you tried that? I can let you know the address of my memory if you like on my CS-PPC (I have 128MB).

Incidentally, on the Blizzard, the RAM was made up of 2 SIMMs, one expanded upwards from an address ($8000000 or something) and one expanded downwards, so if I had a 4MB and an 8MB SIMM, I'd add the memory at ($8000000 - 4MB) with 12MB of size. If you see what I mean.

I sent it to france, it seems to have some other issues too, like not liking 50 mhz crystals all of the sudden :S

The 50 mhz crystal worked great for a while, until it suddenly went black, so for the 400ththousand time i had ti rip everything our of the amiga and discovered that it worked great with a 66 mhz crystal... But still no mem...

It should just work tho,the memory that is... I also feel that its a bit risky using it while there might be a hardware fault.

Wow, I seemed to have missed some feedback on my A1; wonderful!

Hi @Raziel,
You should get rid of the cable salad in there, though
OK, how do I do that? It came with the ThermalTake 430watt PSU. Do you mean pysically cut them to size?
Hi Jack,
And when you do it, get rid of the round cables.

Is there some scientific reason? Most outlets here in the area don't stock 80pin flat ribbon cables. Round, according to neighborhood geeks is best performance. I get into a lot of arguments over it. Tell me how they don't work? Installed them two years ago with the Adaptec SII0680 card and haven't noticed any problems with my Western Digitals HDs and/or any file system.

Hmm, thinking ... thinking, ... no

What you could do is to use some cable bands to tie the
cables together and maybe (if the length allows) tie them
to the case "middle bar" so that they are out of the way
and not prevent airflow...other than that it seems to be
neat and tidy in there

The extra 40 wires that don't do any data transfer are to shield the two adjastent live ones (every second wire is a live one).
When one rolls the cable to make a round one there's a chance that 2 live wires come too close and effectively eliminate that extra shielding.
Airflow is good, but a mere possibility of data corruption is spooky.
Imho good paste, good chipset cooler (with fan) and case fan (one) are adequate for A1. Just don't block the airflow near the case (outside) and as Raziel pointed out: arrange the cables and devices locations so they aren't in the way of airflow
(with sil card you seem to have there it can be bit difficult in case of regular size)

BTW: why not to get the mobo fixed and use internal IDE?
I got rid of all the crowd in the case (I have sigmatel onboard, so the only card is Radeon).

No thanks, it's not work the risk of shipping/mailing in the holidays. The sii0680ide work-around is fine.

I don't think it's a matter (well, not mostly though) of
getting spare ppc cpu's but rather finding anyone who has
the abilities (time, machines) to be able to pull it off.
(The task that is, not the cpu )

That would be great right about now, though jjb probably knows it, its still safely in his possession... Im pretty much doomed without that memory, and subsequently ppc :\

You need to allocate memory from $80000000 to $FF7FFFFF.

The command should be something like:

addmem START $80000000 TO $FF7FFFFF

though I can't remember if you need the dollar signs. Apparently you need to run it from the startup-sequence before SetPatch, but to test it just boot with no startup-sequence and try it from there (obviously making sure that you put addmem in your path, or that you called it explicitly from your sys:tools directory or wherever you put it)

I can't remember which 'Addmem' program I used - there are two on Aminet. I assumed the former as it's newer... either way the readmes should help you work it out.

If it works then typing avail will give you the full amount (the numbers above are for 128MB RAM)

Well I've got tons/years of experience, great at repairs and I've got a few techniques for replacing parts like this, but I don't think I'd try to rework anyones amiga card but my own unless there was no other hope for it.

Have you though about sending it some where they specialize in BGA rework? It would be expensive though.

Here's one method I recommend you don't try

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb9NRBLQVP4&NR=1

I wonder is anyone has any "beyond hope" cards that I could work with? Couldn't hurt to try I guess. Maybe Jean-Jacque has a few in a scrap bin.

I can almost call mine beyond hope now i think, The 060 works tho, but with 18 megs of ram i might aswell go smoke a hobbit :(

But no you wont get to do that with it!
As far as im concerned, if it fires up, and doesnt fry anything in the process. theres hope.

Maybe usless for OS4, but still good for classic stuff. An 060 card is still valuable. You wouldn't want to risk that would you?

You mean the flaming tin can trick? No, I would save that for things I didn't like. :)

I started an email to Amiga Center yesterday, but didn't send it yet.

Heh, an 060 card is great, hell yeah, but theres always the chance that it might fail even more and take the entire a4k with it. But im still praying for miracles.

I'm with you there ! my A1 is my main computer, and the only way for me to run OS4, so if it died, I'd be forced to consider some less palatable alternatives.
anyone in the UK do A1 board repairs/reworks ?

I think I'd prefer to courier it myself, and watch the work !

Guaranteed not to be intertaining. Watching me do a repair must be like watching a chess player fiddle with the board peices for an hour or more. :)

No reply from France, but I was looking for pc equipment to play with. Here's another question though.... even if we can remove/replace the PPC, is there a supply of replacement chips?
