E-UAE and Alien Breed 3D
Just popping in

Hi guys,

Last night I got E-UAE to boot up Alien Breed 3D but it was really, really slow.

I know that we miss JIT and so on, but can this game be made to run playable on a MicroA1?

P.S. Does anybody know what Richard is up to at the moment?

A1200 - 50Mhz 030, 16MB

AB3D is very demanding, because it is a 3D game, and so needs lots of CPU power. A basic A1200 did not run it very well, you really needed a 25MHz 030, and I doubt UAE can emulate that speed without JIT.

I think that the CPU emulation in itself isn't the issue but it's hard to emulate AGA. Even 2D AGA games seems slower in E-UAE than OCS games. O belive that the JIT emulation makes up for the AGA emulation being slow. Real AGA and a 020 could run AB3D 1 AFAIK. Allthough I never ran it on anything but an a4k with a 030 @ 25MHz...

Me too want it to be playable under aos 4.1 (e-uae) so I hope that a solution will be available pretty soon. That game is very good. I got far on my a4k I can remember but I never finished it.

I think there is patch to make AB3D use picasso96 on Aminet.

Really? That would be interesting. I can't seem to find it though... There are som RTG-patches for AB3D 2 though.

Has anyone got this game to work on AmigaONE or Sam?

It's far from as good as AB3D but it would be fun...

Yes I was thinking about the RTG patch,
Picasso96 (pc graphic card) is faster to emulate then AGA graphics, so the game might run faster.

To get picasso96 graphics you need to enable picasso96 emulation in uaerc file, and configure the amount of graphics card memory to use for the emulation, next you most install a picasso96 driver on you AmigaOS3.0/3.1 setup, picasso96 video driver comes whit AmigaOS3.5 and OS3.9.

Only the SDL version of EUAE supports picasso96 emulation.
The Picasso96 version of EUAE can only emulate AGA/ECS or OCS.

ab3d 2 with the rtg patch still required a 68060 to be playable in full screen so I think that it won't be playable under E-UAE with the current CPU emulation in E-UAE.

However I'm much more intrested in being able to play AB3D again. Xtreme racing is another game that would be nice to play again... flyin high... trapped... capital punishment (if it runs, I haven't tried it under emulation)... Even though it's a 2D game I think that it might run too slow since bodyblows galactic aga wasn't runing at full speed the last time I tried it.

Yeah, I agree... AB3D is the superior game... It runs - but far, far to slow. I guess that the same will be true about Xtreme Racing...

Unless somebody can prove me wrong I don't think we can have these games running at top speed with the current EUAE...

Please... pretty please... prove me wrong! :)

All games that do software rendering on OCE/ECS is too slow.

2D game Super frogs AGA (WHLOAD version) is really fast

Latest version of E-UAE seems to not like AB3D1. Even on fast hardware running it on AROS (with jit cpu emulation enabled) its not hugely fast. AB3d2:TKG, Quake, Trapped2, etc (which are all a heck of a lot more hardware intensive) run silky smooth fullscreen, so I can only imagine that AB3D1 does somethings that 0.8.29-wip4 has issues with.

In regards to AB3d2, can anyone tell me if it works on os4.x directly using the RTG patch please ? (and not using euae). It used to run very nicely on Amithlon, and is, in my opinion actually a really good game when framerates are good.

Don't get your hopes up about AB3D2 with the RTG patch - it never worked well on my Amithlon system, so I suspect it has little chance of working on OS4.

If the game maps can be extracted then perhaps a new engine can be built for it? Or even use the q1/q2 engine and make a mod out of it.

The full 68K ASM source for it, is available on aminet.
maybe it could be fixed so a 68K version would work under OS4.
