Task "Radeon" crashes occasionally during boot
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
From time to time, this little but annoying problem raises its ugly head. During boot, after loading the KickStart modules the "Radeon" task crashes. The boot is interrupted and I get a Grim Reaper. The problem goes away after reboot though sometimes I need to reboot the machine several times before success. I am using OS4 Final Update, the machine is A1-XE G4 800 MHz with 512 MB RAM and Radeon 7000.

Here's the crashlog:

Any ideas what could cause this. The irritating part is that this problem seems completely random. The machine might work months without problems, now it has been crashing several times during the last three days.

This is the first I've heard of this, but it's highly likely this may have been addressed in the later versions of the Radeon driver. Looks like you'll have to wait until the A1 update is available to check.

Oh, that looks so familiar.

I got this behaviour on different programs occasionally
while trying to fix my OWB problem and messing around with
different versions of the shared objects.

Could you list your Sobjs:, please?

Quote:
From time to time, this little but annoying problem raises its ugly head. During boot, after loading the KickStart modules the "Radeon" task crashes.
It seems the crash happens when reading the DEVS:Monitors/Radeon icon, if you replaced it, especially if you are using a PNG one now, try if restoring the original icon (with the tooltypes copied from your current one) helps.

I'll check the icon and if that does not help, wait for the update.

Get rid of the SDL-shared library subdir, you only
need the .so file (which you have, but it is smaller than
my version, so...)

(only if the version within the subdir differs from the one already
installed...)
rename libSDL-1.2.so to libSDL-1.2.so_
and
copy SDL-1.2.11_20080130-AmigaOS4_shared/libSDL-1.2.so to libSDL-1.2.so
(You can change back, if it doesn't do anything)
and see if your crashes go away...

the next thing is your libz.so is far bigger in size than mine???
where did you get that?

/me needs to check the sobjs from final update again

edit: apparently yours is from the final update while mine is
from joergs sobjs package

It seems my libSDL is from older version, I'll update it.

Should I update to joerg's sobjects?

Maybe it is me being daft, but how do the sobjs connect to the Radeon task? Is the monitor driver done using SDL?

@joerg
I checked the monitor icon - it is from the clean install of OS4 Final release (dated December 21st 2006).

joerg has few more libs in this link i posted, libcurl e.g.
but also this new(?) version of libz...it wouldn't hurt to
install these too, but first lets try the SDL approach.

I don't know, but as i said, i had occasional problems with
other programs that never raised a hand before, until i
fixed my SOBjs...strangely enough these .so's seems to reach
into the system in a way i know nothing about...

I would think the first course of action would be to file a bug report against dos.library and go from there.

Ok, to whom should I report this and what is the correct procedure for doing it?

Well, the crash log is already in the beginning of this thread, what else is needed?

One problem with this phenomenon is that I cannot reproduce it intentionally - which makes it kinda hard to debug. It just sometimes happens when the machine is booted. Might even be caused by some obscure HW problem?

Yes maybe some RAM problem, maybe a faulty application is doing it, have tried remove every application you do not need in user-startup and wbstartup?

If you get DSI what do you do, do you ignore the error or do you reboot?

If I get DSI error I some times try ignoring the problem, but after trying faulty application I reboot, so that system is stable.

Do you do the same or do wait until the system crashes?

I'll check the RAM tonight with memtester.

I have tried different things when the DSI appears. If I ignore it the WorkBench start to load but the resolution is something like 640x480 and then I get more DSIs - it seems the rest of the startup-sequence fails to operate properly. In the end, I am forced to reboot - usually several times before it finally loads ok. I also tried switching off the the whole machine for a minute or two and switching it on again, but the load usually failed even after that.

I was planning to collect some more crash logs today, but the machine booted without any crashes or problems - and I have done nothing with it since yesterday

After that WorkBench appears in glorious low-resolution mode with grained graphics, and soon after that the whole machine locks up - I can only reset it from the tower button.

Time for a small update...

The memory checks OK. I also opened the tower and did some spring cleaning (checking that all the expansion cards are properly seated, removed some dust etc) - but the problem persists. Now after cold boot it takes about ten warm reboots before the machine boots properly into WorkBench. After it boots successfully, it runs rock solid.

Any ideas how to debug this further? I have tried to eliminate all possible external things and am still wondering whether it might really be a hardware problem (PSU, or possibly the Radeon card itself).

CMOS battery?

I get so many problems with the Radeon driver here:
* Freezing when opening a new screen (this seems to be a new bug since OS4 Final, have posted a crashlog previously, clearly visible with ASp in screen mode after entering/exiting the emulation a few times)
* Hardware sprite "point" is offset incorrectly (clearly visible with ArcEm - latest version on Aminet, not the one on OS4Depot which I think has a dodgy flickery hack)
* Software sprite corrupts the left-most ~32 pixels of the screen when using custom pointer imagery and moving the pointer over this part of the screen (clearly visible with OWB)
Oh, and interrupts don't work.

Nobody else seems to have these problems, except the interrupts one

An update to this thread - I finally managed to acquire a second-hand Radeon 9200 card - works great, but does not remove the Radeon task crashes on boot. So I guess it eliminates the "faulty gfx card" option.

I suppose the next step is to buy a new (bigger?) power supply for the tower. How big power supplies do you people use in your AmigaOne towers? Any recommendations?

I propose you won't find a solution by changing your hardware

I have still problems with some programs using elf.library
and shared objects (OWB being one of them)... i gave up on
trying to find a cure and will wait for the next update
before harrassing the devs again
(if it won't go away, that is)

sorry, but i still blame the shared objects concept in OS4
to suffer from early bird bugs, so to speak
