Cannot read or write DVDs on my X1000

For some reason I cannot read or write any DVDs on my X1000.

I'm pretty sure I burnt some DVDs in the past on this machine, but now it just won't recognize any DVD disk. Not plain DVD, not DVD-R, not DVD+-RW. CDs work. What happened?

The drive is the original that came with the X1000: "Super Writemaster SpeedPlus+". Vendor: TSSTcorp, Product: CDDVDW SH-222BB, as recognized by FryingPan.

Did something happen in Update2 that made it stop reading DVDs?

It seems both FryingPan and MakeCD fails to read media status when there is a DVD inserted. Workbench shows no icon or content when inserting a DVD.

Nothing wrong here, at least (also on X1000).

I just popped in HunoPPC's Games Bundle DVD, and it loaded fine and showed up on WB. Opening the icon showed contents too.

Perhaps you should try another drive, if you can get your hands on one, it could simply be the laser being worn out, or some other fault in the drive. A cleaning disc could also be worth a try.

Best regards,

Niels

The bug which gives a +1 number to any inserted CD/DVD has been corrected in latest update AFAIR so maybe you might have to change the settings ??

That bug was only on the X5000, in the earlier version of its SATA driver.

What version of CDFileSystem do you use?

I'm using
Quote:

CDFileSystem 53.8 (20.10.2019)

and a DVD-RW is recognized.

Do you have the posbility to switch dvd drives?
Maybe the hardware has gone bad?

Same CDFileSystem 53.8 (20.10.2019).
I don't it gets that far. The CD-burner programs can't read drive status of a DVD. As if it isn't readable.

Could be hardware, but CDs work..?
I'll try some more disks and perhaps some cleaning before trying to dig out another drive.

I guess you already tried with a simple data DVD (burned from windows or linux) and simply putting it in, so it gets read by Workbench?
(I was never able to get FryingPan to work after one of the older OS updates and since AmiDVD ingenuinely stopped working, i can't test or burn on AmigaOS4 anymore either)

But whatever disc i put in (no matter of movie or data, own creations or commercial) it will show up with an icon on WB.

If you don't even get that, then there's something broken, espesially when only CD's are woking.

That reminds me...doesn't DVD drives have two different lasers for CD and DVD reading/writing (red and infrared for CD/DVD writing and a lower powered one (of both) for reading, and then came Blu(e)Ray)?
Maybe one of the lasers in the drive died (presumable the red one)?
