Strange attribute issue found, why so many files with +e flag?

Showprogram argument should show only executable files and scripts in bold. but it shows soft links and config files in bold.

Only files with protection bit +S and +E should be bold.

It shows in bold files with E or S attribs.

From OS4 help command:
...
SHOWPROGRAMS

Executable programs and script files will be highlighted in the
listing, by printing their names in boldfaced script.

Did you even look at the picture?

because why use SNES9x.prefs is in bold when it does not have the +S or +E Flags, and its not a executable ELF file.

Sorry about that, me wrong…

But why does so many files have +e attribute, its not logical to set it as default.

Not sure, but that's how by default files are created with "rwed" attrib, maybe you're right that E is not necessary.

Not sure why either, but I remember this being the case for ages - maybe forever.

Possibly someone once thought it would prevent too many people complaining that their programs wouldn't run. Better to have one unnecessary bit set on many files than a necessary one missing on some?

Best regards,

Niels

It would be nice when opeining a file you can change attribs if you want/need, something like this:
Open("file",<mode>,<attrib_flags_like_in_SetProtection>);

maybe it can be done on a macro/define:

OpenWithAttribs(f,m,a) -> { Open(f,m); SetProtection(f,a); }
