Re: USB under OS4 classic

USB2eth-Adaptors do work fine with Poseidon under OS4 Classic. That's the good news. The usbasixeth.device will appear automatically (it is generated in RAM) when Poseidon is runnung and a USB2Eth-Adaptor is being plugged in.

The bad news is that Poseidon is 68k only and that just using a USB2eth-Adaptor for going online (no other changes) will slow down your system by about 20%, maybe even more, compared to using the ZorroII X-Surf ethernet card. This is my own experience with the usage of a dlink USB to Ethernet-Adaptor on an Amiga 4000 equipped with Amiga OS4.0 Classic.

Don't forget to deactiviate OS4's own USB before activating Poseidon, i.e. editing kickstart-layout and the startup-sequence.

DVPlayer fullscreen resolution higher than necessary
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi everybody!

When starting DVplayer 0.65 (OS4.0 Classic version) and playing a VideoCD in fullscreen, it always opens a screen 800x600. The viode itself is 352x288 and the system _has_ a working screen mode of that size. Even if that was too little and if there might be some extra pixels necessary for some kind of invisible border there would be some other screen modes smaller than 800x600 to choose first.
Is there any possibility to make DVPlayer open a screen of the exact size of the video? I hope that would give my slow 604e@150MHz the necessary extra speed (no scaling) to play at least VideoCDs at full speed without skipping frames.

System: Amiga 4000 Desktop, OS4.0 Classic, CSPPC 060/604e, Cybervision 64/3D, DVPlayer 0.65

xMame does not run on my A4k with OS4 Classic - 128MB of RAM is not enough even for very old games from the early 80's.

@MagicSN

O.K., your words in my Amiga's harddrive! I'll give the new xMame a try when I'll be back home. The older versions of mame that I spoke of ran on OS 3.x and that must have been ten years ago.

wahh! xmame now is SDL? In the earlier days there was an Amiga version of mame that ran quite well on old CSPPCs with slow 604e CPUs. Many games from the 80's to the earlier 90's ran at full speed and made a lot of fun to me. But I do not know a single SDL-based program as primitive as possible that runs at reasonable speed on an old CSPPC. I am afraid that even an SDL-based "Hello World!" would overcharge my A4k.

So I will not give this port of xMame a try at all unless someone tells me I was wrong.

Overlay with CV3D and DVPlayer (OS4.0 Classic)
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi everyone!

As you might already know I have lots of troubles with my installation of OS4.0 Classic. While reading of DVPlayer in another thread this reminded me to give some kind of bug report: DVPlayer 0.65, which is delivered with OS4.0 Classic, does not work with the "overlay"-tooltype set. It just plays the video showing a black window. If I grab the window and move it around or resize it, I can see a glimpse of the current frame of the video when I release the mouse button.
Is that a fixable problem? I hope so as the video display is way too slow for even my small collection of Video-CDs without overlay. I remember using the first PPC-based video player for AmigaOS 3.1 back in 1997 (Isis PPC) on the very same computer and it supported overlay on the CV3D resulting in a much higher frame rate

Changing color depth of the Workbench from 8 over 16 to 24 bits has no effect at all (since overlay is supposed to work independently from the screen's color depth that is o.k. :) )

@abalaban

version LIBS:nonvolatile.library gives 52.2 in return. It's the file directly from the OS4-CD for Classic Amigas.

Ranger does not run at all
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi everyone!

I did already mention that my OS4 on A4k Classic (i.e. CSPPC 604e 150MHz) does not run quite stable though it installed smoothly without any errors. Now I ran into another strange problem that I could not yet track down on my own: "Ranger" does not run at all!

I tried to check what Ranger wants to load on startup, but "Snoopy" kept freezing the whole machine every time it displayed the first two or so log-entries. At last I could solve this problem by increasing the stack-size of Snoopy's icon from its default of 4096 Bytes to 512kB. btw: "Snoopy" is not the only program that at first did not run or caused severe problems until I increased its stack size in the icon's tool type.

Finally I got "Snoopy" running and it gave me the following output when trying to run "Ranger":

Re: No charakter display in OWB (OS4 Classic)

@joerg

Thanks for the hint to remove alle non-OS4-fonts. To make things easier I just renamed Fonts: to something else and copied the whole Fonts-Dir from the OS4-CD back to SYS:. After rebooting the machine OWB now works.

But to keep things strange: I _did_ install OWB correctly right after the mentioned instructions. Everything was in place and correctly installed. But for now I will leave the corefonts away. I am happy that OWB finally works. Hopefully there will once be OS4.1 for Classic - it is inacceptable to have the CPU at 90% load while writing this post.

No charakter display in OWB (OS4 Classic)
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi everbody!

I did not turn on my A4k for about 5 months or so and development of OWB went on at great speed, so I missed some versions.
In March I installed OWB 1.21. It started and did load amigans.net, but did not display any text at all. I did the install just as described in the ReadMe of OWB (installed the core fonts, copied some libs to SOBJS: an so on). I could not track down the problem so I gave up on OS4 and the Amiga stood there turned off for 5 months.
Just two days ago I turned it on again, did install some Updates and saw that there was OWB 2.8 out now (even 2.9 by now, but this version needs Cairo). OWB 2.8 claims that it would not any longer make use of the core fonts but uses the amigaOS'es internal font engine. But still the problem remains: OWB comes up, loads its default home page amigans.net, but it does not display any text at all.

What could that be?

My Setup: Amiga 4000D, CSPPC 604e/150MHz, CV3d, X-Surf, Highway USB, AmigaOS 4.0 Classic - nothing special.

Ruediger
