Re: Simple wishlist for next AmigaOS

I hope there'll be a new AmigaOS release (4.2) in time for the X1000 launch. The updates are of course welcome, but Hyperion aren't making any money out of them. My Micro is gathering dust at the moment, due to it won't boot from harddisk anymore.
About the subject of this topic 'Simple' wishlist. I think the demands are set quite high, Java etc. I doubt we will see such 'big stuff'.

@netrot
I've never heard of anyone managing to run 1GB RAM without problems. Have you noticed any thing?
What is the specification of the chip?
I've only got 256 MB RAM and it quickly runs out, especially with OWB. 32MB of Video RAM drains also very quickly with compositing. Shame it's not possible to use Fast ram for the gfx.

@orgin
I also want to thank Joerg for OWB, without it we still would be stuck with IBrowse. Thanks to OWB we have been able to browse modern sites as they are as supposed to look like.
It's sad to see that development will stop, but Joerg has put in so much work into OWB; I think it's three different code base generations where he has had to start from scratch each time and add back in the features. Joerg can't be expected to support OWB continually for years on end. So I think he's well deserved for a big break from OWB.
As far as I know, the only real complaint with OWB has been the absence of the Download Manager. But it's not really needed.
Thanks again to Joerg for his tremendous work.

I agree, it would be nice with an out of the box OS 3.1 workbench on OS 4.1.
I wonder if there'll be another major OS release for OS 4.x, or if we've seen the last.

@cutter It sounds like you've downloaded it from the main UBoot site. That won't work. You need to download the specific Amiga U-Boot firmware from Hyperion's website. http://hyperion-entertainment.biz/Regards, Kotler

@Rigo AmigaOS 4.1 update 1 brought together many third-party programs, some of your own, as well as AISS and the OpenAmiga pointers. Why coulnd't AmiUpdate have been added as well to the update? I see it as a perefectly good candidate. But I might be missing some crucial information here. Of course, this AmiUpdate would NOT have access the system beta files. Anyway, many thanks for your hard work on the OS as well as CodeBench, and of course AmiUpdate. Regards, Kotler

@Amigo1
AFAIU, the main developer for this part of the OS, Detluf Wuerkner (Locale/CharSet etc.), left the team in 2007. This may very well explain why there's no new development in this area. But it seems strange that no remaining developer could have a look at this bug.

@Rigo Integration of DiskImage sounds great, the less configuration I need to do in the OS, the better. I'm really looking forward to Amiga OS4.1 update 1. On the subject of OpenAmiga, can you confirm whether the extended pointer set also has been integrated? OWB uses it for example, and that's bundled with the OS.

I was under the impression that J?rg was working hard on finalizing the OS4.1 update. Also, with the announcement on FireFox, I thought he was part of that effort, with his expertise in porting stuff from other platforms. And thus, it didn't make any sense to continue working on OWB.
It made perfect sense to me, but all doom gloomers seem to think otherwise...

@orgin I think the main problem is that there is a listbrowser gadget already in the OS. IMHO, that's where the improvements should be added. Coding a new gadget seems like a very complex task for little gain. Sorry... Regards Kotler

@Deniil It would be about time for a v2.5 release of IBrowse. In December, it's been 3 years since the last release. As far as I can gather, I believe Oliver Roberts is hacking away on IBrowse and fixing/adding things. I hope the new version includes configurability hand pointer etc. Much like the Open Amiga pointer package. There is an IBrowse newslist on Yahoo Groups, where you can see the occasional snippet about the development of IBrowse. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ibrowse/

@ChrisH
I think there still are OS 4.x people who run FFS, me included. I had a lot of problems with getting OS 4.x to run in the beginning (micro-A1 in 2004), so I haven't dared to change anything since then. But maybe I should give SFS a try, at least.

@diamond
The only option left is to write them yourself.
What you should do is check what drivers exist before you buy any extra peripherals.
I know there are scanner drivers available for Amiga, but I don't remember what makes they were for. ScanQuix is the name, if I'm not completely mistaken.

@kas1e
The quick n' dirty solution to "disabling" the Grim Reaper is to go into SYS:System and then delete or rename the Grim Reaper file. Of course, this is not recommended, but you'll get rid of the Grim Reaper.

I agree, I use a wide screen monitor with the same resolution.
IMHO, AmigaOS should adapt to reality, not the other way around.

Hi Orgin,
Could you please post a screenshot of OWB 3.11? I'm curious what the new Mason graphics looks like and I won't be near my A1 for a few more days.
Thanks.

Hi Thomas,
Does your solution bring any potential problems? If not, I would suggest it to being added to the OS4.x user-startup, if it's such an easy fix.
Thanks.

Hi Clint,
On my ?A1c/OS4.1 setup I also came across this bug. It took me quite a while to find out what the reason was.
Just go into GUI preferences > Options and disable the Compositing Mode for Layers. Then Drag n' Drop of icons will work again.
I hope the OS 4.1 developers will fix this bug.
