Re: SimpleMail 0.38 Released!

I was waiting for an update, as i know that they release one at the end of each year. It's a nice e-mail client, really. I don't think i will install this one since i don't use IMAP and neither recall what this is, so, there is no point for me to.

@BrandonLee

If you are sure that you entered the correct IPs of the primary/secondary DNS servers of your ISP and the problem persists, you can try OpenDNS. www.opendns.com

@Antique

Try to connect with another client.
Try to connect to other servers/networks.
If it still fails, enter the web interface of your router and check if you have blocked the appropriate ports. (6667 for IRC)

Greets from yet another SimpleMail user.

I'm sure that Sebastian Bauer, Bernd Gollesch & the rest of the SimpleMail team would also appreciate emails (their addresses can be found in SimpleMail's Addressbook). But please note that they wish Feature Requests & Bug Reports to be made using the official Tracker system.

And what makes you so sure of it? My mails have been ignored and same goes for most bugs/feature requests on SourceForge, submitted by most SM users.
As you can see, they are either remain unanswered or commented by other users. This is not the case with YAM, even when the developer doesn't agree with the requests...

If you don't try SimpleMail then you won't know what you are missing!

Is there a single feature of SimpleMail that is not supported by YAM? I still use SM because it's more "lite" and perhaps because i'm lazy migrating to YAM.

How can i detect errors on blank or burned CD/DVDs?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi.
Does anyone know if it's possible to detect errors/defects on blank or burned CDs and DVDs, using an Amiga?
For magnetic medias, there are tools for this job like HDInstTools for checking an unformatted HD and DiskSalv/DiskValid/SFSCheck for checking FFS/PFS/SFS partitions.
If there aren't any tools for optical medias, is there another method that will allow me to do this?

Why does it decrompress everything into RAM first before copying to disk?? That feels like ... well ... wrong..

Yes, IF this is what it does, it's just wrong.

Or is that maybe a XAD limitation? I did never use XAD in coding, so I know as much about it as about 7zip internals .. well, if it is a XAD problem, then XAD could need a revise..

I have used it to decompress big lha and old zip files, and it doesn't do that. I don't know what is the case with 7z files. If it decompress them in RAM first, i'd say it's a fault of the client, not of the XAD system.

Simplemail does support multiple accounts (as much as you want). There is a bug in the "avoid duplicates" handling. Simplemail does store the UID-List per server but most servers have an UIDL per user, so if you have two (or more) user per server and are using "avoid duplicates" it wont work correctly.

Hey, good tip! It was a bug of the "avoid duplicates" afterall. Thank you for this!

Yes, but they doesn't seem to be very communicative. Perhaps my e-mails were just caught by their spam filters.

or used the web site, to tell them what features you want?

The web site is unusable with Aweb and IBrowse... 0_o All links leads to the homepage. You can check it up for yourself if you like. Perhaps i will try to access it with OWB 68k later, but, in any case, i'm sure that they are intelligent enough to know what important features SimpleMail misses. I don't think that i have to say anything they are not aware of, already.

But for one email account you means that you can send email from only one account ?.. because you can receive email from different account..

I have provided an explanation on what i'm talking about.

For the search function it is included..

I doubt that you understood what i wrote, unless i'm missing something...
I mean the ability to perform a search inside the body of messages.

for the html it is partially supported..

So what does Yam have that SimpleMail doesn't?

In brief:
- More than one account from the same service
I think that they decided to impose this restriction in order to prevent abuse from SimpleMail users, but just one account is way too strict! They should at least increase the limit to 2 accounts. Many of us are using one "formal" and one "informal" e-mail address from a e-mailing service. Even ISPs offers you more than one account!

-Crop/strip attachments
More than essential, imho. YAM has it since v2.4, iirc..

-Full message search
Another very important (for me) feature which is missing from SimpleMail. Even the ancient MicroDot has it..

Other less important, but good to have, features which are included in YAM:
-XPK support
-Mail receipt function
-Automatic DST adjustment (?)

I think that the only feature YAM lacks is proper HTML support. It just converts HTML into ascii or something, but i'm not sure that i'm right on this one.
To be honest i only have had a peek into YAM 2.5 when the official version came out and i was impressed on how much it has progressed. It is no longer head-to-head as it was in v2.4.
On the other hand it starting to become bloated, imho...
As you said: "I'm pretty sure I don't know half the features of either package. I only use the basics of Yam"

Mmm if you look at the latest 2-3 release, all of them it was released under xMas, so ...

So, let's hope that they will follow the tradition, by making a big, new release.
Otherwise, i'll have to move to YAM 2.5. There are too many vital and basic features, that SimpleMail lacks and YAM has them for quite a long time now.

SimpleMail's development?

Now, that we have hapilly learned that AmiGift is still in development, i'm interested to know about the status of SimpleMail.
It hasn't been updated since december of 2007 and that was only a minor bug-fix release. There are no signs of development since then. Is it over?

Double process entries for each partition?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi.
The subject is self-explainable. I'm using SFS and PFS partitions on my AmigaOS 3 setup and i notice that this occurs only with SFS partitions. (Don't know about FFS ones) Both of the processes are consuming a small amount of memory and CPU and i wonder if there is a purpose behind this.

Btw, something else caught my attention. This is from the description of the latest AFA OS update:
"...(SFS), that use the not well known new functions of the optional exec.library V45.20 from OS3.9 BoingBag2."
What is that about?

I don't know about OWB 1.4, but this isn't correct for most, if not all, linux ports that i have tried. I don't have a GG installation/assigns or any IXxxx enviroment variable and everything works fine.

Yesterday I searched this issue with google and it looks like it's common problem that ffmpeg and mencoder might have some av sync issues.

At least in my case, i have found what is causing the problem but not how to correct it. I have made about 2-3 threads in the past about this.
While i have NO sync problems with playing original MPGs, MPGs which has been converted from another video format by either Mencoder or FFMpeg, refuses to frame-skip when this is necessary to maintain syncronization with the sound stream. They always play with 0 skipped frames. Perhaps your case is different.

@acefnq

I was almost certain that AmiGift's development has ceased. I'm glad that i was wrong! A multi-protocol p2p client for all Amiga OSes. Great!
I was a bit disappointed with the 2.0 pre-release as it was less funtional than 1.x, imho, due to several bugs. I hope that Diego took care of them. AmiGift is not an easy to code application.
