Re: Introducing the Rear Window blog

@trixie
As per usual, peeking through the Rear Window is always a great pleasure and I'm glad some insight was provided about the actual state of some component's code. Now that the code is still fresh in your memory, maybe you could give the following a thought: Remove the 'button'-image from the gadget altogether (tag controlled?) and turn the gadget in a series of pushbuttons, where the labels themselves form the buttons. And that in both vertical and horizontal layouts. The vertical layout becomes then more of a sticky chooser gadget.
Keep on going!

@smf OFFTOPIC Quote: On my X5000 that shares the same heat sink as on the X1000 it took 5-6 years before it was noticable that the heat pad did a lousy job.
The varisys fitted heat sink is not so very suitable for a desktop machine either so it was ofcourse also replaced with a bigger one at the same time Having replaced the (noisy!) fan with a Noctua type a few years ago, I am confronted every now and then, that the fan cuts out and after 9 - 10 minutes the system crashes. Not always, but too often to ignore. What heatsink did you replace it with? Thanks, OldFart BACK 2 TOPIC (please).

Re: Decreasing compatiblitiy of OS4 a good thing?

@MartinW Quote: I've just sold my OS4 system. I hope the new owner has some more luck and stability with it in his/her life and I wish you good times with your guitar purchase. Quote: And I won't lie, one reason, but by no means all is that OS4 is just flaky as hell. Now I'm a user of an X5k since it was first released, heck even my name was on the silkscreen, and I have ALL versions (4) of the OS installed and active. In my experience stability has improved in leaps with every release. And that while I do quite some coding and experimenting with it. So the term 'flaky' comes not in my vocabulary when it is about OS4.1. I hope that both you, while having the system sold in favour of a guitar purchase and the new owner of your system have good times ahead. Hope to see you again here as an owner of another Amiga system. OldFart

Why does a USB-stick not show up on WB? (solved)

Hi,
A bit cryptic? Well, here's the full story. Today I set out and aquired a couple of USB-sticks (64GB each), and tried them onto my x5k with update 3 installed and all. The USB stack does notice a new device having been plugged in and comes up with a little requester with some information about the stick.
And that's where the whole afair stops. No icon coming up or so. Nothing of the kind. Trying a 32GB stick fares no better, but a 8GB one shows up fine.
Is there a limit to the capacity for the stack to recognise it? Or is there some other factor in play?
OldFart.

@Tuvok
Got an ATen CubiC CS1794 here for my Win10, RasPI2 and another small thingy. Supports 1920 x 1080. Accomodates 4 computers. Flawless.
Got another ATen CS1844 here for a whole slew of beefier RasPi's: it supports 2 times 3840 x 2160 monitor, 4 computers, flawless.
No Amiga hooked up to a KVM, as I like to work on a 1920 x 1200 screen and don't know if and how the KVM handles that.
ATen is an expensive premium KVM, but I think it's worth the money.

@rjd324: You stated:Quote: "Of course, another alternative is that users are expected to have large system partitions but for a lot of Amigans this goes against the grain."
I know what you mean here. To retrieve some "lost/wasted space", you could indeed take a close look at SYS:Prefs/Presets and the specificaly at the Backdrops: kick everything out, except your screen resolution. This easily brings you some 7.5Mb! Question to the installer: why was that all there in the first place? Another one to take a look at, is SYS:Locale and then kick all those languages out, which with a high probability you will never, ever use. Some 4Mb to reclaim. Again question to the installer: have I been asked to install all of them? Of my installations (4), only a mere 455Mb is used, while 1,280Mb is allocated, wasting nearly 65%! The disk has a capacity of 100Gb SSD, but none the less that's against the grain of an Amigan. OldFart

Re: Listen on scoket and for other signals (like CTRL-C)

@MigthyMax Shouldn't be there an 'else' in this code, like:
if( ( signals & SIGBREAKF_CTRL_C ) == SIGBREAKF_CTRL_C ) {
printf( "Detected CTRL-C.\n" );
loop = FALSE;
}
/* else ? */
if( FD_ISSET( socket,&listenFds ) ) {
int client = ISocket->accept( socket,NULL,NULL );
if( client != -1 ) {
printf("Client connected.\n");
ISocket->CloseSocket( client );
}
For when CTRL_C has been pressed, makes it still sense to perform the 'if (FD_ISSET' part? Just a thought. OldFart

Looking for enthusiasts for retro top-down puzzle game

Hi, On behalf of somebody close to me (but NOT myself!), with no access to any Amiga forum, I post this request: Quote: We're looking for an enthusiast experienced in drawing pixel-art tiles, objects, and animations. We have recreated a game engine from scratch to run levels for an old Amiga game called Valhalla (see https://www.mobygames.com/game/13132/v ... and-the-lord-of-infinity/), and now we're thinking about creating new levels, graphics, sounds, and a new story. Thus an entirely new game with a retro feel.
The game is a slow-paced puzzle adventure that requires thinking (e.g place water in a glass and read a paper with a biblical phrase to convert to wine, or place a stick on sulphur powder to create a matchstick). It has a top-down view and you can move around with the arrows (tile per tile). You can take stuff, drop stuff, operate stuff etc. It is set in the past (such as in castles, manors, caves, etc) but we're open to other suggestions.
We'd need a full set of tiles per scene, think about maybe 40 tiles per set. We can discuss tile size. Currently we're me (game engine developer) and Russ (level designer), we need graphics and sound artists and more level designers / story creators.
Let me know if you're interested or know someone who is! Please respond by PM. OldFart

@daveyw
It's quite a rare situation you're in. Normally the CPU shuts down when the temperature is becomiing too high. I know this due to my computer sometimes shutting down of its own accord. This phenomenon started when a couple of years ago I replaced the standard cooler, which was quite loud and became louder over time, with a Noctua NF-A6x25 FLX. The latter one sometimes cuts out within the first ten minutes after first booting. After a reboot no problem anylonger, but the fan has to work hard to get the CPU temperature back to acceptable. CPU still functions.
X5020 in a LianLi T60 open frame (not recommended btw).

Re: Iconify gadget on Workbench windows too?

@pjs Quote: In the Workbench, I'd suggest it would be at its best if the windows weren't specific to a specific drive/drawer. Digging into a directory tree leaves you with a lot of windows - iconifying each would be a real mess, IMHO. For this reason I wrote a little proggy called "AlignWindows", which is available on OS4Depot. And as I am the author, there is an off chance that 'it works as advertised'. It works on drives and directories which have an icon of their own. All other windows happen to open at the standard location somewhere at the left upper corner. But I also have a commodity in the works, which puts those directories in a more ordered position, read: in the (already) aligned stack. But hey, as summer is approaching in the Northern Hemisphere, don't hold your breath. OldFart
