@tfrieden

Nice work there. It's shaping up nicely. I have the feeling the donations will come flowing in when the first alpha or beta can be used by OS 4 users.

He isn't the only one that feels that way and therefore these remarks should be addressed at some point and not dismissed.

@CountRaven

Just make sure you buy a good quality power supply for the AmigaOne. You will run into all sorts weird nonsense if you buy a cheapass power supply.

Good power supplies are usually the ones that have an efficiency of at least 80%. And how do you know if it has that? If the specifications don't say anything about it, it is usually not that efficient.

NetSurf can already download so there is no reason for me anymore to use IBrowse.

@Slayer

Why would you want to use IBrowse?

Netsurf and OWB do a great job.

If you want to sell one of those dead G4 modules for the AmigaOne please contact me.

That is a pretty good idea. Netsurf could use that too.

Yep. This browser is shaping up nicely.

With a little bit more speed and download support we will have a replacement for IBrowse.

With the new hardware, more users for OS 4 and software like this we are gearing towards a nice future again.

That would really mean that running the micro A1 in 16-bit is probably a better idea.

Re: PCI Riser cards

@wizzard_o

Well, we have all learnt valuable lessons here with regard to overpriced hardware.

It has and always been the task of the hardware developer to create a BIOS that works with the hardware but MAI didn't for fill that role very well.

The MicroA1 isn't the only ITX based hardware that can't work with riser cards though. The Intel Atom based ITX you can get for as low as 50 euro or the Intel Celeron based ITX that goes as low as 60 euro doesn't support all riser cards either but can take a PCI based graphic cards.

The only people that could possibly do anything about the AmigaOne BIOS have already told in many forum threads that since this is an unpaid thing there would be no more support.

So this is the unofficial position to the A1 hardware:
It is what it is. There will be no more hardware fixes or BIOS fixes. What works, works and that is the end of it.

As for me; I will never buy expensive hardware again unless it's proven it works. I can get over a 50 or 70 euro ITX board that doesn't work 100% but hardware that costs at least 10 times of that and doesn't work 100% is not going to happen to me again.

@wizzard_o
You should have paid attention because it was already said that the micro can not use PCI graphic cards and there would be no more BIOS development for it.

Re: PCI Riser cards

I have tested an active riser card and a normal riser card. They don't work in either a micro or XE.

Also, as was said many times before, the Micro can not use a PCI graphic card probably because of the so called fix to get the onboard IDE working reliable.

Also, since no one pays for a BIOS update, NO AmigaOne of any kind will ever get a BIOS update again.

Basically, the Micro, SE and XE are what they are and that is the end of it.

It doesn't run OS4 for now but it's really this i.e "for now". There is room for another step that will happen when time comes.

Before we had nothing? Before we had hardware which was delivered with a beta of OS 4! Then a few years of nothing. Which was a surprise to say the least because the damn Mac Mini has been available for years and it could have grown the user base a lot whilst bring faster and better hardware.

Now we have slower hardware without OS 4 and a court case by people that seriously need to get a clue. The powers that were in control of this were to busy acting like complete and utter morons to actually see the benefit of this.
Leave it to businesses to completely screw up everything.

If after this weekend it becomes clear to a lot of people that the Sam440 won't be able to run OS 4 because of the court case then this will be the last straw for a lot of people. Until now OS 4 generated a lot of interest to old Amiga users too. If after this weekend nothing useful materializes they will be lost for good.

OS 4 for the classic would have been welcomed years ago. Not now. I doubt even half of the people with a BlizzardPPC or CyberstormPPC will actualy buy it.

I seriously think that neither Hyperion, ACube and Amiga Inc. seriously understand how much damage this will do and how negative the spin will be after this weekend.

Amiga Inc. then successfully killed of ACube's business. The only thing that could save it then is MorphOS.

Amiga Inc. might be after ownership, Dollars and what not but in the end they will have lost any way. No Amiga enthusiast will ever buy anything from them again if they kill of OS 4 after this weekend. I know for sure there will also be a lot of people that will do everything in their power to stop Amiga Inc. from ever succeeding again.

Amiga Inc. might nor realize it but they are the SCO of the Amiga world.

@Elwood

'commercially interesting' is a politically correct term for the following 2 things then.

- no more lawsuit. And then depending on the outcome of the lawsuit.
- many, many new users. And this depends on the part mentioned above.

The only way we are going to quickly have many more users is if this lawsuit ends quickly and the Mac Mini is going to be supported. But since just about anybody in the decision making process is incompetent I doubt this will happen.

Re: Leaving?

@Mikey_C

I left partly already. Most of my spare time is not spent on the Amiga anymore. I need signs of definite improvement before I want to spend any more time on porting stuff or spend anymore time on beta testing for that matter.

I have an AmigaOne-XE and a micro. Most of the time their off these days. I'm spending more and more time with Linux and especially Ubuntu. Ubuntu 7.10 and Compiz Fusion really kick the living crap out of all other operating Systems. I subscribed to Linux Format and was glad to see some ex Amiga Format staff still writing for it.

I'm not selling the AmigaOnes just yet but until the situation improves I won't be using them that much anymore.

I sincerely hope that the people that win the lawsuit are the ones with the most sense in them. That means; support the damn Mac Mini already. We need a big amount of cheap second hand machines here. Mac Mini's have been sold in the hunderds of thousands in the G4 form and with Apple moving towards Intel these are all potential cheap Amiga's.
New PowerPC hardware is just way to expensive, slower than a Mac Mini produced by companies that just fall over at the snap of a finger. Then we can't tap into a large second hand stock again. Do we want the Eyetech situation again?

Re: Sam440 and Hyperion's AOS4.x

@Outcast

They certainly aren't each others opposite.

Intels' Yorkfield stepping for the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad is cutting down considerably on the energy consumption whilst being faster then it's Conroe predecessor.

And then look at the Mobile Core 2 Duo. The T7x00 series only take 34 Watts but these processors are very fast. I have a T7400 in my notebook. It's a great processor.

For a small energy friendly system which is still fast there are now also ITX motherboards by i.e. Jetway. Then put one of those Mobile Core 2 Duo CPU's on it and the system is energy efficient and fast.

Well I have considered to buy one for a long time but since recent events, I won't buy one now. I have stopped all investments in Amiga hardware. A lot must happen will I consider it again.

I already have a micro and an XE and the Sam440 won't add anything to these 2 machines. I'm also fed up with paying a load of money for systems that are not fast either. The 440 might be a nice board but in the end I want something that is fast and energy efficient.
