Re: Cinnamon Writer Bugfix 0.801 available

Hi Kas1e

Thanks for your report:

Bug#1: It is correct that loading a document as DocX which indeed not is a DocX document will lead to a crash. This is due to using external commands to pack and unpack the DocX documents. I think you will find that it is these commands and not CW that crashes. Nevertheless it is bad behavior and I will fix it in the future. I will work to integrate packing and unpacking into CW directly as it causes to much pain.
If you do open a non-text file with the open Txt command. You WILL get the garbled file on screen like on notepad. If you have tried to open the Manual.PDF I have supplied with CW it is around 1.4 mbytes and I would guess that that corresponds loosely on 200-500 pages. A little much to load. Try a smaller file

Bug#2 / #3: The GUI of CW is getting an overhaul in the soon future. Therefore I have not concentrated to much on these issues you mention. They do not crash CW, they are just an inconvenience. Instead of fixing them I would rather use time to implement an Amiga native replacement instead.

Bug#4: This I cannot reproduce. Are you sure that you don't have the buggy Zip command in your C: folder? ) out of 10 errors I receive is actually because people are still using this dud version of the Zip command. As I wrote in #1 It will be fixed by moving all packing/ unpacking into CW, but it is still extremely irritating

Dear All

I have just uploaded new version of Cinnamon Writer where the bugs reported have been fixed. You can download the newest version here or at OS4Depot.net when it becomes available.

If you experience bugs or have suggestions, please contact me at projects@desler.be or use the bug tracker found at my home page (Desler.be). Thank you for your help

Changes include:

- CW misread non-standard color codes for characters when loading a DocX file. Bug fixed

- CW would crash if loading a DocX file containing lines with no content. Bug fixed

- Extra feature: CW will now export cut or copied text as unformatted text to the clipboard to be pasted in other programs. Import from the clipboard does not work satisfactory yet and has not been enabled in this version

- Optimerization: CW have been optimized to run even faster. Im putting a lot of effort into getting CW to run smoothly on even low specced Amigas

What is Cinnamon Writer:

Cinnamon Writer is a compact and efficient word processor developed especially with Amiga and Amiga-like systems in mind. Cinnamon writer have all of the basic functionality expected of a modern word processor. This includes changeable layout style, support antialiased truetype fonts, infinite "intelligent" Undo/Redo history, user defined page setup and DOCX compatibility, allowing exchange of documents with all mayor modern word processors including Abiword, Word and OpenOffice.

@Gregthecanuk

Ispell is great, but as far as I know under GPL. The spell checker I have ported can be incorporated into any project without any regards to the license. I know that there is an Arexx port, but I would rather like to avoid the overhead

Unfortunately I cannot use the Ispell dictionaries as they have been compiled for Ispell

Hi All

I have been able to port a small and efficient spell checker to be used in the next version of Cinnamon Writer to be released soon. To be of any real use I will however need to train it in different languages and make dictionaries for each separate language. Right now I have a nice functioning American English spell checking dictionary, but I would really like to be able to offer spell check capability for all languages spoken by Amiga users.

For each language I will need an exhaustive list of words. Preferable in a plain text document with one word per line. I know that I should be able to find these lists with google and some hard work myself. But I have learned, that these lists are so much easier to find when you search for it in your native tongue.

This is where I need your help. If you would like to help and if know of such a list, please send it to me at projects@desler.be or link it in this thread. Please check the word list before submitting to ensure that it is of high quality and that is extensive (more than 100.000 words). Please also make sure that the word list is covered by a license that allows it to be spread (Guess any form of GPL can be fulfilled). When ever I get a new word list I will try to update this thread so people can see the progress

After releasing the new version of CW, I plan to share the code for the spell checker so if you want to add spell check capabilities to your program, you can easily do that with this code. You will also be free to use any of the dictionary files that I will compile

Dictionaries found so far:

English
Danish
Swedish
German
Spanish

@ChrisH and others

A valid email address is written on the first page of desler.be. It is also written in the manual that follows with CW. I know that the addresses could be more evident, that is my fault. But they are there. Finally, it is always possible to PM me here or on AW. It may take a little longer for me to see those, but I will return the mail.
In regards to your experiences with the crashes. Share them with me. I have always encouraged people to send me crash rapports. I have an email set up fro that: Bugs@desler.be as written in the documentation which is distributed with CW. I have just tried to set up a more professional bug tracker which can be reached from the homepage (I invite everyone who experiences crashes to submit them here. Maybe the bugs won't be fixed overnight, but it is a program in constant development

@Joeled
I had decided not to get to much involved in this thread as it was not originally about cinnamon writer, and I didnt want to topic to be hi-jacked. However, it is very important that people understand that I do not wish for any bounty (eventhough I appreciate the kind thought). If people like CW or like the direction it is headed, they are more than welcome to give a donation as the program progresses toward v. 1 and beyond. This way I can hire one of you to help me with the gui or graphics or donate to other people porting stuff important for CW or Amiga. People can pay me when they think that the product justifies the donation, not in anticipation of something that only exist in my roadmap

@Joeled
I hope to have CW v. 1 ready this year. But as any hobby developer you are not going to get me to promise . Functionality will not be comparable to all the functions of OO or Word (fex. something like mail merging will most likely not be implemented at that time). However all the functionality that most people use most often will be fully supported.

In regards to CW spreadsheet, it would be necessity for me to know exactly what people would need before I started working on it. I would need a clear idea of which functions that people would like to use (Sin, Cos, square root and so on). Which graphic representations people would like to use (Pie chart, bar graphs and so on). Which features of the GUI people would expect as a minimum (target hunting, print out possibilities and so on).
I would like some more time to concentrate on CW before starting on a Spreadsheet program, but when the time was right, I could make programing templates that people could use. People would be getting the task of writing a Cos subroutine, Sin subroutine (simple, yea I know), but also few Anova tests, students t-test, regression formulas and so on. This way I would concentrate on the shell of the Spreadsheet, while more mathematically competent people, would provide the building blocks.

@Kas1e
Dropdown menus are absolutely no problem. It is only a matter of priorities. For example, in the coming version I have concentrated on implementing spellcheck instead of dropdown menus. I will see if I can move up dropdown menus for future versions :)

Hi everybody

As you may know my name is Claus Desler and I am the author Cinnamon Writer. I have been invited to this thread by Joeled to comment on the status of CW and whether I would be interested in following up with a spreadsheet program.

Current status of CW:
CW is constantly being improved and its features expanded. The speed of this depends greatly on the workload of my "real" job.
CW support antialias fonts and the layout and paragraph styles that are used in roughly 99% of daily use (my own guestimate ). CW supports a rather advanced undo/redo system that in some aspects outperform even systems found in Word and OO. CW has rudimentary printing support which will be updated shortly. With the latest update of CW (oct/nov 2011) DocX support was added. This means that CW is able to exchange documents from all word processors that utilize this format (newer Word versions, newer OO versions and others). The support only relates to the features built into CW, that is images f.ex. are not supported yet.
CW is fully amiga native and was from day 1 designed with amiga in mind

Future of CW:
The logic of CW versioning is that when it reaches v 1.00, CW will have all of the features that people uses 99% of the time when using a word processor. It will not be able to do all the things that Word or OO offers, but it will concentrate on the most important and most often features used. Furthermore, I will, if possible implement these features so they function as good or better than in Word and OO.

The latest version of CW was 0.751 so we are getting close. The main points that we are missing are:
- Support for columns
- Support for images
- Support for tables
- Spellcheck

On my computer right now, I have a version where spellcheck has been integrated and is fully functional (until I find a bug). I only need to add some functionality requested by users for this version before I release it. After that I will be working on support for images and shortly thereafter on support for tables. In conclusion: I hope to have version 1.00 ready this year (with several updates during the year)

CW spreadsheet:
I have been thinking a lot about how much work it would be to make a Spreadsheet equivalent to CW, and the answer is too much if I have to do it alone. However, another solution I have been thinking about is to utilize the CW foundation and add a plug-in system where other contributors could add functionality (Think of a Cos subroutine or a statistics subroutine or a subroutine for making bar graphs or pie graphs). This is completely possible, but requires a lot of help from skilled people who knows mathematics, statistics and other-

Other platforms:
Eventhough I have primarily published CW versions for AOS, I am very interested in porting to other Amiga platforms, as such I am trying to get the latest version up and running on AROS. Similar plans also exist for porting to Morphos

How much work will I do:
The completion of any and all of these projects completely depends on whether people would want a solution like CW. People should understand that any undertaking with a project this size takes a lot of time and a lot of hard effort. Even though I could make a super-duper version of CW and follow up with a Spreadsheet program it won't really matter if people are not interesting in using/trying them because they are basically just holding out for a full port of OpenOffice . Not only me, but all developers needs some encouragement to continue their projects. This is not always the same as donations, but more importantly positive critique, good suggestions for future features or just a short reminder once in a while that a person is using the said software

Hi All

I have uploaded a new version of CW that solves the majority of problems users have been experiencing with version 0.75 that was made available last week.

Get it here

Cinnamon Writer 0.75 is a WYSIWYG editor for Amiga with advanced layout options and DocX compatibility.

V. 0.751 contains several bug fixes that solves the problems with loading Truetype fonts, exporting PDFs and printing.

Added is also preliminary short cut keys:

Copy: R-Amiga + c
Cut: R-Amiga + x
Paste: R-Amiga + v
Bold: R-Amiga + b
Underline: R-Amiga + u
Italics: R-Amiga + i

Let me know if you have suggestions for other combinations that you use in every day life

Please know that are still minor problems with the layout of printed versions and PDF exports. These problems are to be solved in the next major update

If you find any new bugs, please report them to me. I was able to make a bug fix version rather quickly because people were kind enough to provide detailed description of the problems experienced

- Enjoy

@IamSONIC
Thanks for the observation, I will look into the issues you have found.

Regarding future versions I indeed do plan to add support for insertion of images and tables. I have compiled a little list of the major features I wish to add before reaching version 1.0.

0.70-> Spellchecking
0.80 -> Modern read/write capabilities (support for ODF or DocX)
0.90 -> Advanced layout options like tables, images and columns

@Cap
It is most likely because of the 4.0 / 4.1 gap. Do you see all the graphics correct before it crashes? If I can find the reason for your crash I will compile a 4.0 compatible version and upload it

Dear All

After some struggle, I have now made the newest version of CW available.
I hope to have removed most / all of the bugs reported, but please treat this version as a Beta and help me by reporting any bugs you find.
From this version and forwards CW do no longer rely on SDL and all operations are now native. At the same time several bugs have been removed and some of the core code has been optimized. As a result this version is the fastest and most stable version to date.
PLEASE NOTICE: In this version mouse whell support has been removed. Furthermore, internet links in the About menu are also not set up correct. This will change for the final version
