From WHDLoad docs: "68010+ is recommended because some installs require the VBR for the 'quit by a key' feature"

As already stated, there is not much performance gain, but this might make it worthwhile. However, as A600 boots from flash relatively fast, it may not be worth it unless it is easy to install.

New Mediator which is capable of direct DMA to CSPPC's memory/resources?

Thanks for replys!

Few additional questions:

1) What about NIC, does it suffer from this DMA-problem in the long run?

2) About AC97-chip: there is only empty socket, where probabably that sound chip should be.. could I just rip off that chip from some pc-motherboard and put it there, or would it require some additional components?

3) Are there any temperature monitors on the XE-motherboard that could be read from OS4?

4) Is Radeon 9250 AGP is fastest 2D/3D-card currently for OS4?

I just got my first OS4 capable system:
A1XE, G4@800MHz, SIL(?) PCI-card, SB and Radeon

DMA and USB are not fixed according to seller. I've few questions here, which I'm in the process here to find out by reading older topics, but I put them here too, if someone could point me to right directions...

1) DMA and USB: Is this SIL card and USB-hub enough to avoid those hw/dma-problems? What about ethernet usage? If DMA-problem can cause errors with ethernet, should I use PCI-NIC? What about PCI USB? Are DMA-modes possible/recommended with SIL?

2) I'm not sure if this is because I haven't done clean install yet (it would seem that this is clean install, I just installed July-update and nothing else is here), but when I try to open 'USB' from Prefs, I get Guru Mediation/Grim Reaper. No USB devices are connected. This probably is not normal?

3) CPU & cooling: There is (probably original) heatsink and fan on the CPU, which seems little "wiggly" when I accidentally touched it. Is it normal that it's not nowhere near as tightly attached to CPU as it is with C2D/Athlon CPUs? What do you recommend if I wanted quieter and more efficient cooler?

4) Where I can locate mixer?

5) Other recommendations or possible pitfalls when fiddling with OS4 and A1 hardware?

Hopefully you guys have some time to give me some pointers!

I'm really enjoying my OS4 experience so far!!

Sounds good! Hopefully Hyperion's pages open up soon - you can imagine how eager I'm to finish the deal with my first OS4 capable system...

I'm quite eager to get to that page, since I'm in the progress of getting myself used A1, and seller is transferring the OS4 license. Not sure however how simple that is, and logging in to my account would tell me atleast if I already have it..

Well, hopefully soon I'll join with the other OS4 users... and my CSPPC/A4k is too waiting for it's own OS4 to be released..

Where could I download the last Ken's 256-color set (3.0 + released additions)?

I deliberately removed v3.0 from OS4 Depot (the only place it was available) -- the set was unfinished and I didn't plan to continue painting icons.

Intuitionbase still has v2.3 (which WAS complete).

Please consider using the v4.0 icons -- they look much better than any of the previous releases (in my opinion) and they display faster (even on Classic machines!).

That is true, but Afa_OS doesn't feel mature enough for me in everyday usage (atleast not yet) and so far I have preferred IconBeFast and patched icon.library, and those have been great with your WIP3. I managed to find the original package, but I remember that you released at least one update for it. Maybe if I ask nicely you could put them available for a while so my transition to v4 icons would be smoother...

I hope one day I can replace icon.library and others directly in the rom with Afa_OS libraries.

@Raziel

Well, I might be wrong with the version number... but if I remember correctly these 256-color icons I'm looking for were version 3 too and never got released as complete package and now they have progressed to these 32bit icons.

So, if the original "work-in-progress" versions of 256-color version with 1 or 2 small additions as lha -packages are still available somewhere to download, I'd be very grateful!

If I remember correctly, some .infos are unnecessarely large.

I used some old icon image copier to copy those nice png-icons to keep .infos small (even with all tooltypes) and my A4000/Mediator/Iconbefast relatively fast.

Normally those large .infos would slow it down, don't know why some of those iconsets are so much larger.
