@vox Yeah, they definitely needed to add more polish to their presentation. Not the best start. Quote: was Amiga Inc last zombie move This is true in perhaps a way you didn't consider. C=USA is now paying them licensing fees. A.Inc may also be working deals with others. This may give them the ability to become more active. In a sense it may be their last zombie move, because they may not be a zombie any longer. Plaz

@vox
Yeah, we kind of hashed alot of that over at AW.org already. If they have the cash, they can try to do just about any thing they want. Will it be profitable enough to support all the effort remains to be seen. When was the last time a partner of Amiga Inc fared well? Could the same fate await C=USA?
I'm not totally against what their doing. But I would also like them to acknowlege other AmigaOS efforts that are going on now.
I can understand them holding back info, I can understand them avoiding players like Hyperion, Aros and others based on past and recent troubles. What I don't understand is their motivation, timing and method in approaching the classic users and sites.
BigBen whom I would trust, is saying there will be net gain for the community. But Barry's writtings and other spectulations are not making a good selling point.
We also have not heard the last word from Hyperion. I can imagine great things, or I can imagine great distress. All the peices to the game are not yet on the table.

Quote: Whatever the reason, it has nothing to do with AROS being based on the Helgis invented term "Open-Source AmigaOS 3.1 codes". I'm late to the discussion, but thought I'd throw 2 cents in.... Maaaany years ago I taked with some one on the Aros team about joining the effort. Wether my memory it correct or not, I believed the project to have been started and based on Commodore's published public documents... the Rom Kernel Reference Manuals (Still have my set). They detail the API's of 3.x and I guess are considered "open". You can probably also still find the posts on Amiga.org where the same manuals are referenced in creating the Minimig project too. Sorry for the interruption. Plaz

@DAX I wish to agree with you, but there seems to be much "clean up" that needs to be done. What ever Amino/Amiga Inc owned or not... they left a big mess. Have a look at this link. American copyrights are valid for many many decades. This list shows several bits that are registered to a host of intities... Commodore, Escom, Amiga Inc. Notice the link includes AOS3.1 registered to Amiga Inc. in 2007. Amiga Inc probably found it hard to defend their claims when the copyright records show so many different owners. If Hyperion truely owns it now, they need to get all this updated. I hope Hyperion can pull this all together that we may end this non-sense once and for all. http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pweb ... commodore+&Search_Code=FT*&PID=EMuanA1aKTOf5YRsJJ2do7Op54&SEQ=20091019182341&CNT=25&HIST=1 Keep in mind there are two peices here. The hardware patents that expire after 21 years, and the copyright that basically last "for the life of the author plus 50 years, or 75 years for a work of corporate authorship. " Plaz

@DAX Here's a link to probably the most definitive description of the Gateway sale to Amino. Not sure who out side of Amino/Amiga Inc. has seen the actual agreement. I haven't. Based on this info, one would assume the OS is now safe. I have to imagine though that the patents are in some ways tied to the OS. http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/jan3rd2000.htmlMy big question, who holds the copyrights? Since the time of the initial Amino buyout, I don't think I've every seen a doc or posting specifically saying "CorpX owns the copyright". I'm being picky perhaps, but it's an important detail. Hopefully all will now agree Hyperion is the copyright holder to Amiga OS code and we can get on with business. Plaz

@DAX
Check the details closely. The Commodore trademarks were sold, but Gateway only gave an exclusive license for the Amiga OS to Amino. They didn't sell ownership according to all the docs I've seen presented over the years.

@angelheart
Here's my best interpetation... Acer owns the Commodore patents and I would beleive the copyright for AOS1.x - 3.x. Gateway gave exclusive rights for AOS to Amino (now Amiga Inc.)
The patents would expire after 21 years. When did Commodore file patents? 1984..94? Some patents would have already expired and the rest will be done by 2015. I don't think any of the current parties are going to be affected by those.
The copyright ownership of AOS could be another story. If Acer ever wakes up to the fact they may indeed own AOS and they decide to make a lega challenge, then we could be in for another strange time in Amigaland.

@ice2642 Perhaps there is some confusion with the open video toaster project where the code for all the Amiga video toaster utilities were released for free. You can see the list of included utils here.... http://www.openvideotoaster.org/You still have to buy Lightwave however. They don't list Amiga specific Items on the site any more, but if you call them you can still buy some Amiga products. About 8 months ago I bought a copy of VT4.5 CD and a ribbon cable needed for interfacing the toaster and flyer cards. You need to ask to be certain, but I think Lightwave is included on the VT4.5 CD (~$25US plus shipping). You have to have a toaster card installed as a "dongle" for it to work though. Don't be suprised if you have to go through more than one rep on the phone to get the right info. Amiga toasters are probably older than some of the folks answering the phones at newtek these days. And the Amiga toaster is refered to as "generation 1" or "gen 1" cards with some of the folks you may talk to. Plaz

@powerball
My card also was "unrepairable". I had been a repair tech for about 22 years, so when my card died, I went to work. I tracked the problem to a bad connection within the multi-layer board.
I've seen this type of failure before in all kinds of equipment. I've even repaired a couple of A3000's with this problem in the past. Sadly, in complicated equipment, the only guide for repairing this type of issue is the original circuit diagrams. I had no docs and could find none. Perhaps chasing signals with an occilloscope might reveal the bad connection, but that's a lot of time/work for a looooog shot chance.
Hoping that I might be wrong about my findings, hoping that JJB's more extensive Amiga experience might payoff, hoping that he might have more documentation to guide him, I sent my card to france.
Unfortunaltely, after swapping serveral chips, he agreed with my diagnosis that some where in the multilayer board a connection (or connections) was bad.
We both admitted defeat (painfully) and moved on. That was 4 years ago. Since then two more of my 3640 cards have died. Now my occilliscope is out of retirement. I'm not letting these go so easily.

@Chris Quote: b) If it is real they probably won't be able to license AmigaOS for it. If it's an 060 only in it's current form, then we're only talking OS3.9 at best. As far as I know 3.9 doesn't suffer the same license limitations as OS4. Kickstart might be a differnt issue though. Plaz

Vista is the biggest waste of resources I've ever seen. I just finished removing vista and replacing XP on my laptop. I havn't actually been angry at a computer in 20 years. Vista not only ran worse than any thing I can ever remember using, it eventually just made me flat out angry to even have it on my system. Horrible response, constant app and browser popups even after they were supposed to be turned off.... ugh... I could go on for a while but won't bother.
Here's a few quick specs from my latest experience. In each case I wiped the partition and started clean on the HD.
To turn on the computer and boot to desktop only....
Vista (default options) on a 2GHZ Core 2 Duo / 1gig ram Over 3 minutes to complete bootup 820meg of memory used A lag in almost every mouse click, and misc popups.
XP (default options) same system Less than 30 second to complete bootup 240meg of memory used. Instant response to every move with no nags
By the time I finshed getting XP set up again, I'd decided that every Vista dev should be doing jail time.

I totally missed this one when it was posted way back when. I'd loved trying my hand at a PPC repair. Too bad I'm too busy with young ones and work these days to devote more time to my old repair biz.
