Re: Web browser in 2021?
Just popping in
Just popping in

@kas1e I'll give that Odyssey version a try. I'm far more interested in 'works' than 'fast'.

I can't really be mad about how resource-heavy web sites have gotten. The problem is that I'm using a ten-year-old computer that was slow compared to PCs at the time I GOT it.

I'd probably get a faster AmigaOS 4 experience emulating it on my PC instead of using the Sam440ep-flex. I just haven't done the fiddling to set it up.

Web browser in 2021?
Just popping in
Just popping in

I have a Sam440ep running 4.1FE, fully patched.

It's been five years or so since I used it much, though.

Are there any web browsers I can get for it that don't kinda suck? Everything I've tried is either insanely dog slow and doesn't work, or just doesn't handle modern web sites, or crashes every other click.

I'm open to suggestions!

OS4 SSH or MOSH client with terminal emulation?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Does anyone know of a MOSH or SSH client for OS4.1 that provides terminal emulation?

I have been able to find a couple of command-line SSH clients, but while they technically work a lot of command-line utilities fail because the host system doesn't understand the Amiga termcap.

I'm looking for something that provides VT220, perhaps.

Alternately, something like Telser that supports SSH instead of just telnet would work, too.

Ideas?

Problem with AmiUpdate / ftp.hyperion-entertainment.biz ?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Anyone else having a problem running AmiUpdate? When I do, it asks for my login details for ftp.hyperion-entertainmentbiz and doesn't work when I do provide them.

I'm still able to log into Hyperion's web site, and AmiUpdate worked when I ran it a couple weeks ago.

I'm not able to manually log into ftp.hyperion-entertainmentbiz with my credentials with an FTP client, either.

Re: Shadow Of The Beast for PS4 (just a though)

They wouldn't have to emulate an Amiga in order to include the original game.

They would just have to port it to the PS4. It wouldn't take them terribly long to do. They have all the art assets, and the original came out on the Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, C-64, Spectrum, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Lynx, FM-Towns, and Turbografx CD, so the thing is obviously pretty portable.

Create AmigaOS 4.1 disc with updates rolled in?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Is it possible to create an AmigaOS 4.1 installation disc with all the updates through 6 rolled in, like slipstreaming a Service Pack into a Windows installation?

I'm having some weird hardware problems that I'm having to reinstall to troubleshoot, and it occurred to me this would be a handy thing to have.

I'm not being offered an update to click2front, and if I install the new intuition.library it stops working. I had to roll back to the old one.

Did you get the click2front update through AmiUpdate?

Really, I'm not liking switching the updates to AmiUpdate. It seems like things don't get tested as well as they did when a bunch of patches were rolled out in an Update.

Re: Amiga netbook?

The LimePC Z9 is an 800 MHz PPC with 512 megs of RAM. Assuming that's the machine they're OEMing (and it seems likely), shouldn't it at least be as fast as a Sam440ep-flex?

Maybe they're having driver issues. I just hope they haven't dropped the idea completely.

Or maybe they just don't have enough people to work on the X1000 and Z9 ports at the same time.

Amiga netbook?

Has there been any news about the Amiga netbook that was announced last fall? I haven't seen anything, though I've seen lots of info about the X1000.

It looked like the hardware was going to just be sourced from LimePC, so I wouldn't think that would be much of an issue. Have any of them been seen at any of the assorted Amiga shows?

Actually, that's very encouraging. I mostly want to run Workbench-legal software anyway, and ECS is fine. Thanks for the heads up!

@hotrod

Well, the AmigaOne and Wii are both PowerPC chips, so they're pretty similar. (The Wii's is probably considerably faster per clock, since it's a newer design, but it's the same family of beast.)

ARM chips are probably the most common in the world. And I do mean most common, not 'most common after Intel 80x86 compatible'. Pretty much every smartphone, most dumbphones, and embedded gizmo runs on some flavor of ARM.

(ARM originally stood for Acorn RISC Machine. It's come a long way since then. :)

There are quite a few cheap ARM-based netbooks, and most of the Android tablets coming out use some ARM or another.

I guess I'll just have to find someone with an equivalent gizmo and have them try it out.

Really, if the device can run both UAE and Einstein (the Newton emulator), I'll pretty much have to get one. :)

Re: NFS

@tlm

AmiTCP itself won't run in AmigaOS 4.1, however I've found that most of the binaries and utilities that it comes with will.

OS 4.1's network stack is similar enough to AmiTCP for things to work. You'll want to install it, but not actually have it run at startup; you don't need any of its changes to the startup scripts.

You will need to assign AmiTCP: to wherever you have it installed and may need a few more assigns.

I wound up just using the AmiTCP folder from my AmigaOS 3.1 machine.

UAE on ARM Linux?

Has anyone tried UAE on Linux on an ARM processor? I'm considering getting an ARM based netbook/tablet that uses a Texas Instruments cortex-A8 chip. One of the OSes it can run is Ubuntu, so presumably I could use the Linux version of UAE on it.

Any idea how UAE would run on a 1 GHz or so ARM chip?

Extended characters in OS 4.1?

How do you type extended characters in OS 4.1?

I needed an uppercase eth ( ? ) in a document I was working on, and I wound up using copy and paste to get it off a web page because I couldn't figure out how to enter one.

NFS? NFS, you say?

Where might I find an NFS client for OS4?

Or server, I guess, but I really need a client.

Are there any 1000bT ethernet cards that will work with AmigaOS 4.1 update 2?

@Chris

I had this problem when I first got my Sam440ep-flex.

Drove me NUTS. Tried all sorts of different keyboards and mice and hubs and combinations of ports and drivers.

The solution: Replace the power supply.

I did that, and wham. Everything worked fine.

It's not something I'd normally think to try because the system worked fine otherwise, but that did it.

No problems since!

Re: Audio hiss on Sam440ep-flex in Update 1 and 2

@Slayer

Unfortunatly, that's just not economically possible.

I wonder if an add-in sound card would help?

What PCI sound cards are supported under 4.1?

@ChrisH

Everything is muted except PCM and Master. Reducing the PCM volume reduces the volume of the hiss faster than it reduces volume of other sounds played.

Meaning, if I reduce the PCM volume and then crank up my speakers to compensate, the hiss is less noticable, but still there.

Reducing the Master volume doesn't change the hiss-to-actual-sound ratio.

I also tried using the mixer here http://os4depot.net/share/audio/misc/mixer.lha uploaded yesterday; same result.

Audio hiss on Sam440ep-flex in Update 1 and 2
Just popping in
Just popping in

I really thought I had seen several topics about this issue, but I can't find them.

So either my search-fu is weak, or I'm imagining things again.

I have a Sam440ep-flex 800Mhz. Since installing Update 1, I get a soft hiss sound almost constantly from my speakers. Sometimes it goes away for a little while, but it usually comes back. If I'm actually playing sound the hiss seems to stop until the sound is done.

I had this issue when I first got my Sam, but fixed it somehow, and don't remember how.

I am using the updated audio drivers from OS4Depot. (http://os4depot.net/index.php?functio ... e=driver/audio/cs4281.lha)

Any ideas?

(Sam 440ep-flex 800 Mhz, 1G RAM, 30G SSD, DVD-RW, 350w power supply, 1920x1200 monitor on a Radeon 9250 128M)
