Re: Captive

@djrikki

I have joystick port 0 as the mouse which works fine with left and right mouse buttons. Joystick port 1 is set to the numpad and works correctly, but when I left click the shop it doesn't do anything! Yes, I was around when this game was first released I have the correctly A500 settings - I just can't click the shop guy and thus can't repair myself! argghh. Can someone else try and get this working through a UAE? Game downloaded from thegamearchives.com - might try the other 'versions' of the game available on the site as a list ditch attempt.

Edit: Got it working.. downloaded Captive (1990)(Mindscape)[cr CLS][a].adf - a4 just refused to enter shop.

Running it via E-UAE on the Mac, everything works great, but for some reason I cannot use a single shop in the game - my droids are on life-support. How on earth do I use the shop in the game I have tried every key on the keyboard! Any help much appreciated.

@ChrisH

Seems a bit odd to have to have a special program to just edit remote text files, but I guess if the OS can't have FTP files look like local files, then you'd have to do something like that instead.

----------

Yeah thats what I was stating earlier - in Mac OS X when you mount an ftp device in Finder it is Read-only which is kinda useless as you can't double-click to open file in your favourite program, edit and save it.

@ChrisH

Ummmm, perhaps because not everyone likes or uses both AW.net & Amigans.net? You might as well complain that both AW.net and Amigans.net exist...

And personally speaking, I'm doing it as an experiment to help decide whether I should just post on one site.

---------

Posting on one site makes sense - if its worthy 'news' someone else will post likely bring it up there as well. Personally I would stay away from posting on Amiga.org at that moment as that place is descending into chaos. So many negative posters over there and next to no moderation whatsoever.

@ChrisH

Amiga OS4 is supplied with two third-party programs (AmiFTP & pFTP) for accessing FTP sites. Both will allow you to read & write, although I can't comment further since I don't use them. While they are not integrated into the OS, they should give you the same (or better) access to FTP sites as Windows (and OS X).

However, there is also a program for AmigaOS called "FTP Mount", and this does something which neither Windows nor (I think) OS X can do, and that is it allows (some) other programs to access FTP sites. Just try it on Windows or OS X, and I bet you can NOT open an FTP file in a text editor without first copying it to your computer! FTP Mount allows exactly this on OS4, and can be really powerful since you could (for example) write an AmigaDOS script to do something on an FTP site.

I use FTP Mount in combination with a program I wrote (FolderSync2) to keep data files on my OS4 system in sync with data files on my Windows system. I have an FTP server running on my Windows system, and then FolderSync2 treats it just like a 'local' folder and synchronises it for me. (Actually it's not quite that simple, since FTP does not support time stamps on files, so I have to run a special program Windows before & after running FolderSync2 on the Amiga.)

-------------

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply post.

Yes accessing remote files in an integrated manner would be very welcome on any platform. In OS X I use the curiously titled CyberDuck for all my ftp requirements at work and it only has a Open file in application feature which obviously is a local copy of the file. On a similar trail of thought... in the last week I tried opening two instances of CyberDuck and dragging a file between the two - alas it didn't work and I had to revert to copying it to the desktop first and dragging it from there. So if FTP Mount would allow drag and drop of files between different remote servers (or even the same one eg. different folder in view) then that would be pretty spectacular.

As for general text editing a remote file (eg. a cgi-script, html files, .conf etc) I use Bare Bone's excellent TextWrangler which I swear by.
Many years ago I remember a TextWrangler-like application on the Amiga - I wonder if there is anything comparable nowadays in OS4 as I love the way you can have as many text files open as possible and switch between so intuitively.

@Shadow

I love the look of the quality of the games that can be created in Torque. Would I also be right in thinking you can use TGE to write games for the iPhone?

Sounds like an impressive piece of software that would be very welcome on the Amiga platform.

@all

Hi, I am thinking about diving in and buying an X1000 this summer so I have many unanswered questions floating around my head. So here's a FTP one.

a. Windows by default can read AND write to a ftp server through Explorer.
b. OSX by default can only READ :( to a ftp mounted server through Finder.

--

So which is the best FTP Mount program available on the AOS4 that can out-feature OSX and allow both reading and writing? Secondly, does mounting an ftp server come as standard in AOS4 or do I have to install a third-party application to achieve this?

@everyone

Slow, slow, slow thats all I hear about Gnash. And its not even Gnash's fault its flash's fault.

I have an iBook G4 thats starting to gather dust which I have had for 5 years now - the entire time Flash performed like the UK in the Eurovision.

Flash is plain slow there is no getting away from it will never make a difference how good Gnash performs.

The future is not Flash, the future is open-source - the Steve Jobs dream. One which many people the world over subscribe to.

@Templario

Of course Templario is correct, but no-one seems to acknowledge it here.

Just add a simple banner above that changes every X% or X seconds (whichever is sooner) showcasing features of the product that is being installed.

In fact every major application should use a standard OS native installer and all application developers should be 'encouraged' to submit a minimum number of banners. Programmers should be proud of their end-product why not showcase it at its best?

On a similar trail of thought look at OS4 Depot, I believe developers should not be able to submit a GUI-based application without at least one screenshot.

As an Ex-Amiga user and M$ Hater (and possible future buyer of X1000) I'd love to be able to look at OS4 Depot (and similar sites) and see what software is available and what it actually looks like on-screen.

Foreinstance someone just uploaded SilverBlack and SilverBlue themes on to OS4 Depot... no screenshots were submitted!

Pictures do indeed tell a thousand words.

PS. In which decade are grey background windows (eg. folder windows and requesters) in Amiga OS going to be replaced with white! Purely from an eyesight pov White or Blue text simply do not show clearly on a grey background.

Q. How many active developers are intricately involved with the development of AmigaOS 4.x and beyond? Anyone able to place a figure on it?

I see lots of people have read this thread now. I wonder how many people with any degree of artistic talent would contribute to a such an idea if Hyperion/A-Eon decided to involve the community more with its website and AOS4 graphic content.

@varmfskii

Yeah perfectly understood about needing more software ports etc... but the people who can come up with great art aren't the same people who are capable of programming, but nevertheless point taken.

Thanks for the all great welcomes.

Supporting the Amiga platform
Quite a regular

Hello all,

New to the forum here at Amigans, other forums I have visited are so negative about the future and the past of the Amiga, but this does appear not to be the case here after reading member's posts for the last few months I feel this forum represents what it is to be an Amiga user even if I am not one currently myself I would like to be one in the future and I read so much negativity elsewhere its quite depressing. Amigans appears to be a breathe of fresh air and I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone that is so hopeful of the future and spurring development. Keep up the good work.

Now down to business. I'd like to propose a greater connection between the efforts of Hyperion/A-Eon in their release of the A1-X1000 and the greater community. So how do we exactly grow this connection?

Well the project is staring at us in the face - the launch of the A1-X1000. First off A-Eon's website - yes I know its 'temporary' in nature at the moment, but I'd like to see Hyperion/A-Eon and Amigans' members come together to make www.a-eon.com something to inspire and be proud in terms of look, content and the message it aims to deliver.

(So you haven't given us any details yet?)

I'm getting around to it give me a chance! Within the Amiga community there is a great wealth of programming and artistic talent that can be drawn open to make the website a great place to visit. PC has www.microsoft.com, Mac has www.apple.com - Amiga has www.a-eon.com. Apple has come great community areas of their website which promote the platform and give their users a sense of belonging.

Here is my proposal.

Amigans and the wider community should get involved in the following 'competitions' in co-operation with Hyperion/A-Eon:

* Design a skin/layout for the A-Eon site
* Design a corporate video or animation (possibly 3D) of the A-Eon logo
* Design a video/presentation that shows the best strengths of the Amiga
* Design a standard Icon Set / workbench theme for a future OS Release
* Design a screen saver
* Design a workbench background image

The community is invited to submit there entries prior to the launch of the A1-X1000. Now this can work one of two ways, the community votes for their favourite in each category or Hyperion selects the winners and presents all entries on their website.

Thoughts and opinions please.
