Re: Using SDL from Sobjs

@broadblues
It looks like I got almost everything right (using -fPIC only on the plugins, etc.). I only used the static libdl.a, because for some reason with -use-dynld the executable go linked with libbz2.so.1.0 instead of libbz2.so. So thanks, I'll try libdl.so, and get back to you.

Using SDL from Sobjs

Since I already started working on an updated RTTR (Settlers 2.5) port for MOS, it made sense to make it my first OS4 port. The game is built like this: main executable, video plugin, audio plugin. The two plugins use SDL to handle the sound, input, GL context creation, etc. The problem is when I try to open them with dlopen() they crash. Here's stacktrace:
Quote:

native kernel module dos.library.kmod+0x00024f18

As you can see _INIT_CreateInput() crashes, which is one of the SDL constructors: http://code.google.com/p/os4sdl/sourc ... gaos4/SDL_os4wm.c?r=38#62
My question is, can I use SDL from SObjs? BTW, I'm using the static libdl.a from os4depot for convenience, so the main executable is linked statically.

@kas1e
Thanks for the tips. I installed KingCon 1.8, but how can I make it the default shell handler?

@tlosm
It's hard to tell after a few days, but from the users standpoint Worbench didn't change much since the 3.x days. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on what are you looking for.
As a developer I really, really like the Grim Reaper and the native GDB port. It makes debugging much less of a pain. While the cold reboot is definitely slower than MOS, OS4 has warm reboot, which is fast and does the job in most cases. Shared object (or rather dynamic linking) support is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Right now it's giving me some problems with RTTR...

Since I got the SDK working, here's my rather small roadmap: RTTR, Transmission Qt, TORCS, Speed Dreams. After that I'll go on, and try to port every non-FPS game from the list in my first post (sorry FPS fans... including me ).

I just checked out the updates, and it turns out that the stock Peg2 OS4 install CD shipped with a buggy peg2ide.device. This explains the random write errors I got during installation. Now the Update1 disc doesn't have this problem, and it requires a full reinstall. I wish someone have warned me about this.. oh well I'm going to have an up to date system soon, and then I can start playing with it.

Hey hey hey, I finally got it working! :P Thanks to everyone who made this possible. I'm posting this from the freshly installed OS4.
@tlosm
Thanks, I'll try to set up the dual booting later. Currently I have two machines to run MorphOS on, and I'm just happy that I FINALLY got AmigaOS4 up and running... Geez!

@Joeled
Well, I'm better off than I was yesterday, thanks to everyone! I just wish I could get a working OS4 install already. The replaced cable helped a bit, but I still can't boot the installed system. The bootloader shows the partition, but when I try to boot from it I only get an AmigaDOS shell. I can browse the installed partition from the CD just fine.

edit: I take it back, I still get write errors with the replaced cable. Mind you it's a brand new one, I never used it before.

@Elwood
It's really not the PSU, the 5V rail is just below 5.25V, which is within the specs. I'm using a PATA HDD, and those 80 wire cables are much more frail than the SATA ones. I'll try to replace it, but I'm pretty sure I used the same cable to test the HDD with my PC.

@nbache
Yes, that is the correct way. Thanks to you, and the others who have donated, we are already at €75, wow! I also want to stress that I don't limit myself to games only, I already have programs, like Transmission on my TODO list.
I couldn't install OS4 yet, because the HDD write errors. I suspect the 5V rail in the PSU to be the culprit, because the USB devices act rather flaky too, and the HDD worked perfectly in a different machine.

In the end I had to pay €90 (!) customs fee, and the motherboard doesn't work. No picture, and it doesn't turn on the keyboard either. Sad
edit: Ok, scratch the last part. After reseating everything for the second time, the openfirmware prompt appeared... man, this really surprised me. I'm installing AmigaOS4 right now. This €90 fee has really hit me hard tough... If anyone can spare a few coins, please throw them in my way. You won't regret it

For VOIP Mumble could be ported, since OS4 already has Qt.

Thanks, but fortunately I was able to recycle most stuff from an old PC (case, HDD, PSU, DVD burner). Now I'm at the mercy of NAV :(

The motherboard has arrived, but it's currently held hostage by the customs authorities. It's going to take some time to sort this out.

edit: It looks like customs duty will be around €16 at minimum. I hope they will accept it as a gift, because it was in fact a gift Otherwise I might have to pay more, up to €77

Do you plan to make your version open source? You could take this AROS bounty too for some extra dough.
