@MichaelMerkel
The assigns are actually for doing a "live" backup of the whole system (programs: and work: are applications and data partitions I linked into sys: and added assigns to s:s-s) After the completing the backup I would have removed the assign, unfortunately ther'es some problem with links inside the linked partitions amidvd got stuck on resolving them. Just copying the sys:+programs:+work: into one location worked fine at some point for me, but I thought can skip the copy. Will do another attempt soon.

Hi all,
How do I setup vinced for use with ssh? I can't see what I'm typing untill I "break name ssh all". Tried vnc: and vnr: handlers.
And: is there any cure for setvnc gui crashes?
Edit: forgot to mention that all this is under OS4.1
TIA Jack

I use Amiga all the time here. I must admit that Cygnix is used a lot: I use X11 e-mail client (amiga build) since there's no decent non-x11 alternative for IMAP client. And I my work is to develop under linux?and administrate some unix/linux servers. I connect to with cygnix and ssh. Otherwise (besides ocassional seamonkey) - amiga only. All non-amigaish tasks are performed on AOS display. And the only encounters with Windows are to compile the stuff I develop on windows for releas purposes, windows is displayed on Amiga too (vmware running XP + compiler inside window in cygnix or vnc session). Yes it's not perfect, lacks some stuff people call vital for some reason, but it's Amiga and can do a lot and in sane way.

@freddix
Just add the .a file you want to the linker command. Examples:
say you have something.a archived from some .o files and you want to link it in:
to create .a: gcc -c fun1.c gcc -c fun2.c gcc -c fun3.c delete somthing.a ar q something.a fun1.o fun2.o fun3.o ranlib something.a
to link your code with something.a gcc mycode.c somethng.a -o myapp
or more comlex code: gcc -c mycode1.c gcc -c mycode2.c gcc mycode1.o mycode2.o something.a -o myapp
And as mentioned above: order is important. Afair, in case of multiple instances of the same function, the first one is linked in.
I hope this helps Jack

@abalaban Quote: creation of an Amiga Shared library ( xxx.library) is a bit more complicated (but not inacessible) and requires some specific code.
There's an option to make it shared without special code as .so file. But I think (please correct me if I'm wrong) it isn't shared in the way .library is (each app that loads .so file will have own copy of the code loaded into memory). Jack

@VooDoo & Freddix:
Wild guess: Do Sys:Prefs/Gui->Window refresh type/Gadget redraw method have any influence? You can try opening DOpus on it's own screen and see if the problem occurs there.

Any clues anyone.
100MHz is the maximum resolution, I'm sure it can go as low as 60 at the same res. As you see the higher the resolution , the lower is the max. refresh rate. It is relevant to CRT displays only. Anyway, good to see that all's well. Enjoy the real estate on your desk

@TSK
Fixed mapping is in dhcp server's setup. Certain IP's outside the range of the IPs for lease are associated with certain MAC addresses. So the result is when certain network interface that has a fixed mapping goes online, it'll receiiiiive the same IP adderess. I find it very comfortable (printer and nfs/samba shares sport constant IP adresses, while internally everyone obtains the IP atuomatically). Loging is in some setups is off by default and needs to be switched on. Some problems can be traced down in the logs (for example to see if certain MAC address requested an IP from the server and what was the outcome)/

@Antique Quote: Sun Feb 22 18:02:56 2009 [info ]: Lease for interface "PPC440EP_ETH" has expired; restarting the DHCP process.
The modem (by deafault) should allow renewal. You can also define the dhcp server of the modem to leave some IPs outside leases range and set your Sam to use one IP from that range. If disconnection persist, then the above message probab;y has nothing to do with them. You can also check logs in modem's interface to see if it actually disconnects from the ISP. Might require you to set up the modem to use log.

@Slayer Quote: can anyone consider a great brand in this day and age?
I use wireless-less router and modem suplied by adsl line provider. Tried the dsl modem+router combos the provider suggested with no luck (siemens that appeared to be a rebranded rotal and asus, both weren't up to the job with 3 computers and printer connected, one had lan problems, other had bad qos routines, was flooded easily when uploading at full bandwidth). The router I use is LevelOne. I intsalled similar one with wireless at my mother's hourse, works well so far. Let the router do the routering and modem do the modeming

@Antique
Any details on the conection type? Is it dsl? If yes: how do you connect? Any software using for dialing? Or modem's web interface? One can usually detour the need for dsl software on the machine by using the modem's internal dialing software. In that case you can monitor the line statistics via modem's interface. Statistics can indicate on dsl line opearating outside tolerable margins. If margins are ok and you're losing the connection with modem itself, then we'll tackle the lan side of the modem. Please supply some details. (I had some experience with adsl line provider which supported linux only and know how to approach the support to get the service in case the problem's source is not in the machine itself).

@cygnusEd Quote: Dead keys are not working under AmiCygnix, sorry. Seems to be a problem of the X server. I'm working on it.
Another possibility is to use xmodmap. I use it for other stuff than dead keys, here's what I execute on user startup: Quote: 18.AOS4.1:> tail -n 1 Work:AmiCygnix/home/jack/.cygnixrc xmodmap /home/.xmodmaprc 18.AOS4.1:> type home:.xmodmaprc keycode 80 = Page_Up keycode 81 = Page_Down keycode 83 = F11 keycode 119 = F12 keycode 120 = Home keycode 121 = End
Use xev to get keycode. Function keys can be reusable. The trick will be to find out how to define the desire character. one can expertiment using commands: xmodmap -e "keycode 96 = F9 some-keycode-for-shift-F9" Try keycodes values >=224 for starters. Jack

Does anyone knows how to convert any image into gimp's internal xcf fromat? Imagemagick only reads the format. Readme file suggests imagamagick. xcftools can read only as well.
Any ideas? Jack

Any additional info? Is the switch set up as dhcp server with fixed or automatic mapping? If automatic: try to make it fixed in dhcp config and leave the dhcp on AOS side (afaiu, A1 is set up with an automatic IP) You can try to see it's logs (might need explicit re configuraton to create the logs). Try to locate the MAC address of your network card in the logs.
And paste here the interface config file from AOS.
