Re: developers, what are you working on?

Working very very slowly on MindSpace 2 which will hopefully end up as a vaguely useful vector drawing app.

Working even more slowly on my Zeewolf clone (4 years and counting).

The number of languages listed above that can be found on OS4depot refutes this statement.

Where do you get that from? You can write code that runs on OS1,2,3 or 4, but obviously won't be able to use features added by a later version if you want it to run on a previous version.

That's called "progress", I believe.

AmigaOS, MorphOS and AROS all have different people with different ideas leading them and moving them forwards, so although they all share a common ancestry, it is inevitable that it will become more and more difficult to maintain cross-compatibility whilst using the latest features of each OS. Again, that's progress.

You can use Cubic as an IDE on all these platforms quite easily.

Also, Hollywood supports all of these platforms.

I think the 'K' is because the lead developer is called Kaze.

Requirements listed here say GTK2.

I could be wrong though

Sodipodi would be a great start.

I wonder if we could persuade someone to replicate the functionality and API for Boehm's library.

Yeah, Scribus is QT based, sadly.

Another thought: kompozer? GTK2, I believe?

btw, great job Edgar.

Inkscape?

Audacity?

Scribus?

Have no idea about the feasability of any of these, but they sure would be handy to me.

AISS is great.

I would like to see a scalable icon system though so that icons could be consistently sized irrespective of screen resolution.

That's good to hear, in a strange sort of way.

I always thought the slowdown here was down to my knackered hard-drive or my dodgy programming skills.

I could provide free facilities at the school I work in at Stratford-upon-Avon for a Saturday event. This would include 2 full IT suites with data projectors, broadband etc allowing internet video/irc links to be easily set up. There would be plenty of space/power to set up visitors' Amigas.

Onsite refreshments would be hot/cold drinks and snacks. There are 2 very good pubs next door to the school. Folk attending the event could even persuade their other halves to spend a day seeing the sites in Stratford and then meet up for a meal later on? There are reasonable rail and road links into Stratford, providing we don't get the same amount of rain as we did in the Summer...

The nice thing about Linux is that support for new hardware doesn't take long to appear. What distro and version are you using?

I'm sure that if you started a new thread under Free For All, you'd get some replies. You are welcome to pm me about Linux help if you wish.

Well, except for the java games, I can doall ofthose from IBrowse or AWeb.

With a little good luck, we should be seeing Sputnik (a KHTML-based browser for MorphOS) on OS4 before the end of the year.

@Kreciu

An uptodate SDK.

Video editing would be the big need for me. An office suite with Open Document support would be nice (certainly doesn't have to be OO.org itself though). Abiword under X11 is a very good move in the right direction though.

If you want to create presentations, that can be achieved with Hollywood and then run under UAE on Windows/Linux and PPT are now becoming accessible thanks to PointRider.

What hardware do you have that won't work under Linux?

Re: Future OS4 direction

@Mlehto

Well a lot of OS4 apps are reasonably small and I imagine most people currently developing on OS4 will support improvements and want to keep their apps "native". I also imagine that these changes are a loooooong way off - maybe a couple of years or more down the line, so no panic just yet.

The biggest challenge will be in providing detailed examples and documentation, which has always been difficult to find for OS4. I get the impression that a number of people coding on OS4 are reasonably new to programming (myself included) and frankly, have very little idea whether we are going about things in the right way or not. Any drastic changes must be accompanied by lots of documentation!

SvgTools will allow batch conversion of svg files to .png and postscript. Don't know how close a .ps file is to an .eps though or whether Final Writer et al can handle .png?

(tongue in cheek suggestion) Maybe mindspace could have a save as eps option.

That's not a daft idea. I don't know what the eps format looks like: a variant of postcript, I believe? An eps datatype might be of more use.

Side note: MindSpace 1.0 is pretty much complete, although currently stalled until problems with the svg datatype are sorted.

MindSpace 2 will be a complete re-write and be a little bit of an InkScape clone and better use of datatypes will be a priority.

@TSK

SVG datatype works fine for most tasks. It does tend to cause complete lock-ups when attempting to handle text (on Final Update, haven't tried it on the post-final update).

@Swoop

EPS is ( was?) quite a popular vector image format. ProPage and PageStream can both use eps clipart files. There used to be a number of tools to convert eps into other formats (including bitmap ones). Try Aminet.

I imagine that svg would possibly be preferable nowadays. What we could do with is an eps to svg converter.
