Re: Constructing a null modem
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

@LyleHaze

My apolopgies if my answer seemed inappropriate,
I can see now why that is hpw you feel about it.

It was not my intention to be rude, I try to explain:

Before posting my first question i had tried to use the multimeter with a needle and did not get contacts. So in your answer i just looked (too fast) if i got the info i thought i needed about left to right or right to left ordering of pins. This occured probably because i had searched the internet about mull modems allready: i skipped that info and what followed too unfortunately.

In my second mail i just wanted to be very clear about what (i thought) i "really" needed, not anything else. At that moment i was puzzled with not getting results with the needle and thought it had to do with the PCB connector whose openings were still smaller.

I overlooked the paperclip suggestion, but believe me or not, took this up in a thread about testing Power Supply Units,
and it is really a good suggestion because the contacts work far better than with a needle and you can clamp one testing probe between the arms of the clip.

My third mail explained the results and i was still not aware you made that paperclip suggestion.

It is now nearly 3 weeks that i struggl to bring back to life my two Sam's which failed on me at the same moment.

I do use the Amiga as my main computer and losing both was and still is a very stressfull situation.

Please be assured i fully appreciate your and any help i get.
I'll read answers more carefully in the future.

Thanks for pointing out what annoyed you, and giving me the ooportunitity, i hope, to straighten things out/

Re: Constructing a null modem

Having had a closer look on those Mouse pcb connectors they don't seem to be standardised, one has 8 contacts, the other one 9.
I'll disconnect them and measure the colorr codes out with a multimeter,

Result: only one out of three does not have broken wires on the essential 2, 3 and 5 contacts.The colors are not standardised : all three differ.

Luckily i got hold of two female RS232C connectors that are not molded.

Re: Constructing a null modem

@LyleHaze

It is not the principle for realising a null modem nor the numbering of the pins on a RS232C connector that are the problem.

Question is if i cut open the cable and see a lot of colored wires which is which? Indeed i have no direct access to the inners of that moulded connector.

I do have acces though to the 9 pin in line PCB connectors that i pulled out of the mouse's PCB.

Question is: how is their numbering scheme? (the colors are different but that is not even the main problem: how are the pins of the PCB connector related to the RS232 connector?

These small PCB connectors are some 1.7 cm wdth, light brown, hane one side with 2 heightened thickings and the contacts at the other side;

When i look at this contacts side with the colored wires down, is the numbering starting from left to right or from right to left?

This is the only answer i relly need

Just can't stay away

I have recuperated two rs232c cables form old mouses.

The connection shema is given notably here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_modem

The RS232C side is molded, so i can't see what is wire 1, wire 2 etc

The other side inside the mouse nds on soe small connector, with 9 pins inline.
The color scheme for both cables is different.

If i look at that inner connectror from the contacts side,cable hanging down, how do i count the contacts from left to right or the other way?

@Severin

My setup is the same as before my HD crash - onmy the HD has been replaced with an older 40 GB drive
The monitor is still the same too: a HP2211x connected to the graphics card DVI connector.

The only thing that may have changed is the selected resolution (if so then lower)

@xenic
I changed to "as workbench" wherever i did note the possibility.
No change yet

In my 'Screens' prefs, I have no Screen mode set in the 'Display' tab and the screen mode is set in most of my programs that open a screen. The 'GUI' and 'Palette' tabs have "Like Workbench" set.

I have two screens defined: Wordworth and OWB (Odyssey)
I don't see how you can not define the screen mode, or wait:
having set for the OWB screen display mode the "Apply" choice to "never" and rebooting the screen mode was empty now. Odyssey positioned itself on the WB screen though.
...
and now the miracle:

after having set the OWB screen mode again to 1280x1024RGB16, and the the Apply choice to"as default" he switching is as wanted, no black screen anymore :)

@TSK
i use RGB16 in both cases.
The frequencies seem to be chosen automatically in screenmode prefs, and on screens prefs i don't see them anywhere ...

Just can't stay away

In my previous sys: setup switching betwean screens (>WB & custom) was smoot. Now i get a black screen before the new screen appears.
The characteristics of both screens are the same :
resolution is the same: 1280x1024RGB
Font is the same: DejaVu Sans 18
I have ticked "As default" everywhere that can be chosen in the custom screens preferences

What am i missing?

@PEB
Thank you , but it must be more complicated , if possible?
from the wiki
Quote:
WINDOWS.ACTIVE
Name of the currently active Workbench window; this will be ' ' if none of Workbench's windows is currently active.

it is the path of a file whose icon has been "left-out" that i am after

/* Query name, position and size of the first icon * shown in the root window. */
GETATTR window.icons.all.0
NAME root
STEM root

SAY root
.name
SAY root
.left
SAY root
.top
SAY root
.width
SAY root
.height
SAY root
.type

i was expecting a
root.path here. I onder why it was ot implemented, since you get that path when opening the icon's "information" gui

When you select an icon byname it can happen that you have 2 (or more) identically named icons.
To be sure you use the right one you need at least their paths.

How can you acces these from a script?

I'm dubious about this explanation, since you have a (slim) ATX powersupply, which should therefore have an excess of power.

I borrowed a bigger PSU and connected the new 500 GB HD to it, the rest of the machine is powered as usual.
This works flawless till now. I was able to download & install OS4.1FE update 1
(That was not possible when the HD was powered with the interanl PSU.)
Working with this set up right now.

I don't know the power requirements of the motherboard, and i don't know the specifications of my internal PSU

@ xenix thanks
@gurus2000 i tried witin much longer: no reaction

I hope it is the PSU (12 V in CD CDsmall printed circuit producing the 5 V 3 V) The ACX connector is inserted very tightly and i can't pull it out (pushing the lever at the same time).I'll have to dismantle the am a bit more i guess)

I think I see how I could connect my 2 Sams, but what is th "terminal" you mention, I guess it is not the shell? if yes though, is there a command to make the connection?

1) the DVI-to-VGA convertor is faulty or doesn't work with your setup

I think we can eliminate this cause: I connected the LCD directly to the DVI connector, it was for the old CRT monitor that i needed the DVI-to_VGA connector.

I did not use the Sam440ep for a long time ( a year? more) but it worked ok the last time, so burning some element on the mobo would be surprising.
Connections becoming oxydised looked more probable to me, but i was not kean on opening the Sam. With the help of a more experienced neighbour we checked the connections.
We did not check all voltages though.
The PSU is a small card which getd 12 V form external AC/DC converter (at least the only 2 such converters i have , whose connector fits in the case connector are 12 V, 5V does not fit

Does anybody recognise the symptons? (HD LED flashing once then nothing? internal blue led on the mobo is on)

I have no graphic card and explained things badly:

the crt was connected using a DVI to VGA connector, the flat screen using the DVI connector directly. That should not make the difference i guess.
Mobo problem?

As i seem to be really stuck with my SAM460 i would be very glad if i could bring back my sam440ep to life.

I did not use it for a year and when trying to power on the red led flashed a moment but the white led never took over.
Is this a motherboard problem, or ??

U-boot really messed up -SOLVED :))
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

After having been able to use higher screen resolutions (RAdeon2) on my sam460ex, in a new boot, u-boot did not get past a scan of storage devices even with HD removed, no USB sticks and booting from DVD

I can't interrupt the recurrent stream of data using either ctl or return key;

Taking a photo of the screen spitting out

call backtrace:
4 lines of hexadecimal numbers
Bad Trap at PC ff6af8 SR: 1000, vector 1300
2 lines
NIP: ...
GR:..
again 3 lines with hexadecimal numbers
GPR00:
GPR08:
GPR16:
GPR24:

seems really bad :((

Leaving the machine alone some time, it booted again.

Time to change the battery, which i did

I succeded at last
- Radeion2 was not really installed
- using screnmode prefs as directed , i made the mistake of saving as well the monitor tab as the ,avaomabmeùodes tab
when saving only the second one, the changes were effective. :)

Thanks for the help, i really now have the "feel" again i had as before HD crash
