Re: Amiga developers and coders only

@xenic

That's exactly my point. You learned about most of those inactive projects when the developer(s) made posts to already well-established sites...not from Facebook postings. Developers of inactive projects have already lost any incentive to continue developing/porting so asking them to come and "hang out" at a Facebook page in the hopes that they'll magically find an incentive and the time and money to continue their inactive projects is a bit absurd.

Until there's a consumer demand for OS4 software, Amiga users will have to be content with the current state of software development, or the lack thereof.

@Joeled

I can already hear the crickets chirping. Anyone still developing for OS4 has no incentive to move to this new "developer enclave" you've written about. Facebook is a disaster for managing anything project related. Sounds like you'd actually be competing with already well-established Amiga sites such as this one and A.org and AmigaWorld too. Fragmentation is not an answer to creating more software for a near dead platform.

Developer repositories already exist in the form of git, SVN, etc...Much simpler to create a bounty for a project with a specific goal in mind and manage it via one of the aforementioned repos.

@BSzili

Well, I'm hoping that since QT was recently ported to OS4 that we'll see some quality productivity applications ported over. I'm just impatient after 15 years of waiting! LOL!

@BSzili

I understand that and know you aren't excluding yourself from applications other than games, but it seems that we're always waiting for "someone else" to port productivity applications. So the net effect is that we're always waiting for the other guy to do it and it never gets done.

If I had the time and skills, I would attempt a port of GnuCalc and one or two other apps, but I don't have the time or skills. And you asked the question and I felt I had a valid answer for you.

I also don't see those who are porting LibreOffice or Firefox/Timber Wolf opening up their sources because it would hurt X1000 sales....people have already been complaining about that and this problem will continue until someone takes that to court, or at least threatens legal action.

And for business people looking for a cost effective solutions, waiting another 2+ years for LibreOffice and paying $3000 USD for the hardware is simply ridiculous.

@BSzili

Porting games is all fine and good, but in order for OS4/MOS/AROS to gain some real credibility, it would be nice if there were native productivity programs. We're in dire need of a spreadsheet and presentation package.....and yes I know about AmiCygnix but it doesn't run on MOS or AROS and it isn't truly native for OS4 either. It's an X window compatility layer.

My colleagues who have never seen classic Amigas and don't know the history behind them or NG Amigas ask valid questions when they see OS4, MOS and AROS and they invariably say, "Looks good but what can I do with it beyond vintage gaming, light word processing and some very limited web surfing?" Their points are valid ones.

Why are you posting such a phony bit of tripe? Being that you're already a developer of Amiga software you're already well acquainted with the tools necessary for Amiga development as well as the web sites out there that support Amigans.

Use gparted on a Linux system to re-partition it. That usually works for me. You may have to re-create a MS-DOS partition table first before you're allowed to create a new partition and format it though.

Re: FLTK

abalaban over at AmigWorld has updated FLTK. He has a slight problem though.

I have on my HD an updated FLTK port that adds:
- mousewheel support
- abiliy to access volumes and assigns when accessing '/'

The only problem preventing its release is that it seems I'm unable to compile it with a working JPEG support anymore. My test program is an updated flPhoto and when using this version I can't save (or rotate I don't remember) a JPEG without obtaining an error message (I forgot right now but I can provide it if required).

I'm surprised that there hasn't been much interest in porting good applications from other platforms to OS4 using FLTK. I've found a really nice spreadsheet here: http://nab.pcug.org.au/

It's called simply sprsht1.2.2. Complete source (Window and Linux binaries too) is included and it has a configurable GUI. The only dependency is FLTK. I sold my PegII about 18 months ago or I'd take a stab at porting this to OS4 using Massimiliano's FLTK library. Is anybody here willing to take this on? I've looked over the source code and I don't think it would take more than a few hours to have a working OS4 binary.

You can get OS4 FLTK here: http://www.soft3dev.net/pages/fltk.php

There are also pre-compiled OS4 binaries for all the FLTK examples.

KOffice would be a better choice. Fewer dependencies and it uses QT anyway.

I'm looking for a copy of ABasic. It's the version of BASIC that shipped on the Amiga Workbench Extras Disk v1.0. This version of BASIC was written by Metacomco and isn't related to the AmigaBASIC written by Microsoft.

Does anyone know where I can get ABasic or an ADF of Extras Disk? Googled around for quite a while and found the patches that enable it to work under KS/WB 2.0 or greater, but no luck finding ABasic itself.
