I was going by the overall free system memory. Once that was approacing zero, my system would freeze.

@Maijestro

I've also noticed that my A1222 freezes if I copy files that are too large to the RAM disk, but only if I have completely maxed it out (i.e. no more space to copy to). I've tried two different brands/capacities of RAM sticks and it is the same on both.

On my setup, I do have a SWAP partition.

Kind regards,

Francis

EDIT: I stand corrected. If I attempt to copy the AmigaOS 4.1 ISO image (~600MB) to RAM: using the Workbench drag'n'drop it freezes the system. I've tried this three times and it varies each time how far it progresses (19%, 31%, 24%). I also tried doing the copy using the Shell and it worked flawlessly.

I've just noticed what looks like a bug in the application version numbers on AMIStore and Updater.

AMIStore shows that the currently downloaded version of the Enhancer Software I have is version 7.3c when it should be 2.2:

Resized Image

The Enhancer Software doesn't show up in the Updater, but it thinks ImageFX Studio is also version 7.3c when it should be 4.5:

It appears for some reason that they are getting the version number from Personal Paint.

To be honest, the Checkmate wasn't my first choice in cases. I was initially after something relatively petite that would accomodate the A1222 with graphics card and optical drive. Trying to get a case with space for an optical drive these days is not easy and a number that I did like were discontinued.

Despite its annoyances, I do like the Checkmate A1500 Mini case. I feel though that Stephen may have taken a page out of Apple's book of aesthetics over function in some areas of its design, but that's fine and I was able to work around those caveats.

The label I made myself. I redid the A1222 logo as I needed a clean monochrome version then printed it using a Brother P-touch label printer.

The printer only prints a single colour which varies depending on the type of ribbon used (in this case white on black). For the red text of the "One" I just used a red Sharpie pen to colour it in.

Checkmate A1500 Mini A1222 build
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi there,

I've finally gotten around to finishing my A1222 build using a Checkmate A1500 Mini case. Well, almost finished. I still have no audio output at the moment, but hopefully soon!

The following image shows the A1222 motherboard with graphics card fitted to the case. I also fitted some exhaust fans to the casing.

Resized Image

Another view of the graphics card. The card is an SRhonyra Radeon RX550. The manual for the Checkmate case recommends a card with a blower type fan so that the heat is expelled from the case rather than being blown back into the case. I had a bit of difficulty trying to get one of these types of card (i.e. low-profile single width with a blower) and eventually had to get one imported from the US.

Resized Image

Around the back of the case, just under where the PSU would be mounted, I've fitted an external full-size SD card slot (with micro SD adapter) and additional USB socket (you can never have enough USB sockets in my opinion ). The SD card slot goes directly to the micro SD card slot on the A1222 motherboard and just makes it easier if I ever need to do anything with the card. The USB socket is attached to an internal USB hub.

Resized Image

View of the ribbon cable for the external SD card slot. The ribbon cable was really long, so I've cable tied it to try and tidy it up a bit.

Resized Image

The USB hub, which is an NZXT Internal USB Hub 3. This provides 4 USB headers (so up to 8 USB ports). The purple header connects to the USB header on the motherboard. A nice thing about the hub is that it is magnetic so it just sticks to the metal of the casing. It's also powered by the SATA power connections, so no need to worry about the connected devices not working due to lack of power.

I've also fitted a USB header to dual USB ports adapter so that I can attach it to the DVD drive via a USB to SATA adapter. I'm using USB for the DVD drive as the current A1222 SATA drivers seem to have a bit of a problem with optical drives. If this ever changes I will switch the DVD drive back to SATA.

Resized Image

When I got the Checkmate A1500 Mini I was a little disappointed that there were no front mounted USB ports. I ended up getting this housing which can accomodate an optical drive, 2.5" hard drive (which is behind a door and is easily removable) and has 2 USB ports. This was another item that I struggled to find in the UK, so I had to get it imported from the US. It's also USB 3, so requires a USB 3 to USB 2 header adapter and is connected to the NZXT USB hub.

You can also see the fancy rainbow lighting I fitted through the grill.

Resized Image

Full view of the front of the casing. I think the 5.25" drive bay housing matches quite nicely with the rest of the case.

Resized Image

This is the control box for the LED rainbow lighting which has been stuck to the side of the 5.25" drive bay housing using its supplied double-sided sticky pad. It's powered from SATA and has an IR sensor for a remote control that allows you to change the settings. I have the IR sensor mounted at the grill openings which you should be able to see in the photo.

The LED strips are magnetic, so it's easy to place them inside the case. I would have liked to have placed them nearer the grill, but the bracket for the 5.25" drive bay housing prevents that.

Resized Image

Mounted the power supply, a Corsair SF750. It's my first time seeing these types of power supplies and they are really petite and almost cute compared with the usual ATX types I'm used to. I also did some cable tidying, although there is room for improvement.

The device sitting on top of the optical drive housing is a Noctua NA-FC1 fan-speed controller for 4-pin PWM fans. The three rear mounted case fans when they are running full-tilt were a bit noisy for my liking, so with the controller I've adjusted them so they are now running almost silently.

Resized Image

The assembled system.

Resized Image

Rear view of the assembled system.

Resized Image

And another shot of the system powered up with the LED lighting.

Resized Image

Despite there being a few things about the Checkmate A1500 Mini case that annoyed me, this was quite a fun build.

If you have any questions about this build, please feel free to ask.

Kind regards,

Francis

Re: A1222Plus has a new home

Hi there,

Okay, so the original order I had placed for a Vaddio HDMI audio inserter ended up being cancelled for reasons unknown. I was, however, able to purchase an alternative unit, a CYP AU-11CA. Here are my findings, which I hope people find useful.

The Good

I was able to connect this unit up to my Sony Bravia TV with the A1222 HDMI and audio outputs combined into a single HDMI video/audio stream. There was no visible difference that I could discern in image quality between the A1222 being connected directly to my TV and being passed through the audio inserter unit. Audio sounded fine as well.

The Not So Good

The audio inserter unit I purchased only does a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 so didn't work for my main monitor which is 3440x1440 unless I reduced the A1222's screen resolution.

My monitor (ASUS PG35VG) doesn't have built-in speakers, but it does have a headphone jack. Try as I might, I couldn't get any audio when using this audio inserter. I also tried my soundbar, but I couldn't get any audio from that either using the audio inserter. I don't have a reason why this should be the case, as from what I can see from the manuals it should work. I can only guess that there is some incompatibility in the audio stream format that the audio inserter produces.

I've just ordered another type of HDMI audio inserter, so we'll see if I have any more success with that one.

Francis

Before you publish your tool on Os4Depot or your website (yes I have already visited it) is there a possibility that we could translate the tool into German? I would do the translation myself if your tool also supports catalog files.

Having different translations is one of the things on my list that I definitely want to add. I just need to have a look at how best to do this.

It looks very much like the feature which was included in the Workbench menu in 4.1FE Update 2 a couple of years ago.

Thanks for your comments, they are genuinely appreciated.

Before I got my A1222, I did have plans to revisit my OS4Reboot tool which I probably last looked at in 2005 or 2006 (wow, how time flies! ) when I still had my Micro-A1 (I unfortunately had to sell it along with some other things due to unexpected money issues at the time). When I got the A1222 and discovered it already had this functionality I originally decided to forget about OS4Reboot, but due to interest here I decided to go ahead with giving it an overhaul.

I don't have a lot of C programming experience (I'm more of a BASIC guy), so as you said this is a good opportunity to learn and practice. Plus, it also gives me the opportunity to add features and fix things that I wanted to do first time round.

@Maijestro

On AmiStore it just says that there is an update. On Updater it says that there are a bunch of Radeon updates and an updated Dir command. If I try to download or update them I just get told that theses are either not enabled for my account (Updater) or the files are missing from the server (AmiStore).

I've now got a working version of OS4Reboot (currently retitled as PowerReboot) that can power off the system:

Good news! I now have OS4Reboot compiling successfully on my A1222.

Now that I've got my development environment working, I've been having a review of my old code and updating it. Hopefully it won't be too long before I get the new version released.

I got mine through the Early Adopter scheme.

I'm just looking at the a1222plus.com page and it looks as though they will be sending out Enhancer 2.3 when it's available to the Early Adopters. I'm wondering if the version we received is an interim measure until it is ready.

The licence code I received for my A1222 only seems to have Personal Paint and ImageFX Studio show up as purchased items on the Updater tool. They don't appear on AmiStore as items I own.

I haven't purchased the Enhancer software in the past.

A1222+ and Enhancer 2.2 Question

Hi there,

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here. I have the A1222+ with a digital copy of the Enhancer 2.2 software, but AmiStore doesn't recognise that I have this and wants to charge for it and the Updater tool doesn't show it under the My Purchases tab. I can see that there are some updates available, but the Updater tool says that they are not enabled for download on my account.

Should I be able to see the Enhancer 2.2 on my account and download updates?

@AmigaOldie

Some CDs can deteriorate over time, although it could be a combination of factors such as the lens alignment or laser quality of the drive. As you have a system that is able to read the discs, it might be worthwhile doing a 1:1 copy of them to new good quality discs (I'd recommend Verbatim CD-Rs).

Or, you could create an ISO image of the CDs and use DiskImage to mount it on the A1222, which is probably easier.

Kind regards,

Francis
