Re: Newer version of Perl than 5.8.5 for AmigaOS4.1?

Just popping in

I have really just been playing around with perl on the Amiga so haven't touhed many modules. I got inspired to do a bit of Perl on the Amiga since I am in the middle of doing a few things in it at work.

I just noticed things like state are missing since that is a 5.10 function. Another thing I have come across is that @ARGV doesn't seem to receive any arguments I pass on the command line. The array is just empty. This could be PEBKAC in my case though :P

Newer version of Perl than 5.8.5 for AmigaOS4.1?

I was wondering if anyone knew of a newer version of Perl than the 5.8.5 version which comes with the AmigaOS4 SDK? At least 5.10 would be good to get my hands on.

I got an email some time ago from AmigaKit informing me that my name has been recorded as expressing interest for the second batch. I must be way down the list though since I haven't heard anything about it since.

Congrats to those who get to enjoy their new toy. Oh and I am a little envious, if not jealous of you ;)

When I was growing up, I lived in a number of rural Australian towns. At the time it was not unusual to find a koala up a tree in someones front yard. After a few years that basically stopped in the last country town I lived in.

We used to also come across them in the bush when me and my friends would go exploring through the bush, not all that common but it did happen on occassion. We would also often come across wallabies.

Everything else we ran into was generally bad for your health ;)

I am currently waiting to see what is eventuates with the next batch of X1000's. If it turns out I don't have the money to afford one or some other road block prevents me from purchasing one then I will be looking at getting the Amigaone500.

For the moment I will just make do with my Sam440ep.

A SSH client for the Amiga which does not constantly bork like I find the OpenSSH port does would be nice (as an example OpenSSH lets me connect to my servers but try and su and it seems to stop working).

SCP would be nice as well. The amount of times I need to SCP a file is great. I noticed one or two comments in this thread about FTP but for many occassions that just doesn't cut it for a number of my sysadmin tasks. For starters, I can't just go and install vsftp or some other ftp server on a production machine I administer but if SSH is on the box already, SCP is a win.

It would be nice if it also worked with the Amiga shell but if it requires a seperate GUI then so be it. This would come down to the fact that I am just used to kicking off SSH sessions from one of the many shells I seem to always have running on my desktops :P

@broadblues

Thanks for that. I was wondering where it saved the logs to and was hoping it would be clear text.

What does the USB inspector say?

Since you didn't specify which part of USB inspector you are after I have taken a screen shot of both tabs and placed them at the below two URLs.

usbinspector1
usbinspector2

I did see errors within the USB log as well. Unfortunately it does not appear as though it will allow you to copy and paste from the log and I have already gone and disabled the ehci driver since it was driving me a little crazy with the unplugging/plugging of the keyboard.

I never had this problem before update3 but before update3, AmigaOS4.1 also didn't support USB2 forcing the device to fallback to the USB1.1 standard.

Is your keyboard connected DIRECTLY to your machine? i.e. One of the USB ports at the rear of it's case.

Does your keyboard have a built-in USB hub, such that it has some spare USB ports on it?

PLEASE report back, or problems like this will likely remain unfixed.

I just installed update4 and have this problem as well. Previously with update3 I just disabled USB2 which fixed the issue for me and was hoping update4 would fix the problem properly. I was giving it a bit of a test run before heading over to the Hyperion Forums. For completeness sake just some quick information:
* Keyboard keeps dropping out ie. stops working.
* While unplugging and replugging the keyboard does fix the issue, every third time I do so also seems to fix the keyboard but also causes the mouse to stop working.
* Keyboard and mouse are directly plugged into the computer.
* Keyboard has a built in USB hub built into it.
* Having or not having devices in the keyboard based USB hub has no effect one way or another.
* Running on a Sam440.

I have used the Linux version of the data files with the AmigaOS4 port on a Sam440 @533MHz and it was surprisingly playable.

800mhz would bring more users then 400mhz. Its a laptop, it will probably sell more then if it would a desktop. 800mhz maybe even me would be interested. How would owb/timberwolf work with 400mhz for example. Not so good :)

I tend to agree. The computer world is a numbers game. At present, people who are not part of the Amiga world would classify a 800Mhz netbook as a resonable spec yet many would classify a 400Mhz netbook as being to under powered and potentially a bit of a useless toy.

You have to remember that even ex-Amiga users have been living in mainstream computer land for some time now and will be influenced by its mainy biases.

Just because you get exciting about a netbook and plan to get one regardless of the speed (I know there is a good chance I will get one if the price stays on target) doesn't mean the slower speed and a chance of saving maybe $100 is the better choice over the faster slightly more expensive version. If you ask me, double the speed for a fraction of the over all cost extra is the better deal.

This is all supposition on all our behalves since we can only guess at what will be and doubly so since from the limited announcement we currently have access to, the specs are still in the air to some degree. I guess we will find out what the reality of the situation will turn out to be next year.

I guess it would also depend on if you still want to trust the SSL. Basically, it can't confirm that the SSL is correct or not so it may be a fake.

Since it is a bank, unless you know for sure it is legitimate, I would err on the side of caution.

Re: Linux question

Historically I have always gone with NVidia due to their closed source driver being:
* Easy to install.
* it's always just worked.

I tried ATI before AMD bought them out and it was painful.

If you don't like NVidia but would prefer ATI don't dispair. I have heard that since AMD got ATI, they have rewritten the closed source driver and that most of the problems that existed are now gone. I can't speak from personal expirience since I am currently running a NVidia GTX 470 in my main machine but my girlfriend is running an ATI Radeon 4870 and said it was indeed easy to setup on Linux now compared to what it was like in the past.

With Linux you would make the file immutable but that requires extra acl's other than the regular rwx properties. I would be interested if you could do the same with files under AmigaOS.

I use an Enermax Aurora Premium keyboard (Black one). It's a low profile aluminum keyboard which I really like to type on. I use it with a Sam440 and can confirm the 2 x USB ports in it work.

Re: NFS

OK, the sourceforge entry I found doesn't actually have any files to download which is a pity. I did find a strange NFSD creation on Aminet though. It uses an nfsd.config file rather than an exports file.

Besides the sunrpc entry in the internet prefs and an sys:devs/internet/rpc file which was just a text file, I could not find anything to do with RPC/Portmapping on my system and a quick google didn't really pull up to much either. Sorry to say but without that, NFS will not work.

I downloaded an nfsd daemon to run on my SAM 440 EP. I learn that I need a portmapper, e.g., in bin directory of AMITCP.

Two Questions:
1. Does anyone know another source for portmapper?
2. Will Amitcp run with AmigaOS 4.1?

I am curious where you grabbed the NFSD software from? I wouldn't mind getting an NFS client going on my Sam machine so I can access all my ogg's and movies etc.

I have to admit the last time I played with NFS on an Amiga was back when I used AmiTCP so I am not 100% sure what does or does not exist for AmigaOS4 since all I have bothered to do network wise is to get it onto my LAN and accessing the internet.

NFS requires RPC which is basically the port mapping. I can see RPC in services within the the internet preferences but a quick look has not shown me any of the other things I would expect to see.

Generally speaking from a *nix view for NFS to work, you need RPC installed aka the portmapper, the NFSD files which you already have and you also define your NFS shares/settings etc within the exports file.

Hrmm.. I found a copy of NFS client and NFSD on sourceforge, is this where you got yours from? I might have a play event though it is late where I am and I should get some sleep :P
