Re: AmiTunes 0.5

@Daedalus

Thanks for the info mate, most interesting. Is there readily available hardware, or at least a circuit board? I don't fancy etching my own circuits!

Re: AmiTunes 0.5

@Daedalus

Do you think a standard 68000 Amiga would be fast enough for the hardware? The parallel port it pretty slow on a 7MHz Amiga. I was just wondering if I could run something like this on my little A600/2MB/OS3.1.

Re: Mail server for AmigaOS 3+ ?

@Skinner

With that 040 (it its a full 040), CPU I would probably go:

http://www.debian.org/ports/m68k/

Much better I would think for a a more robust mail server.

I never got the damn thing to work with DHCP, I tried and I tried and I bloody tried again. In the end, Static was the only way.

Besides, setting the IP to static isn't too much of a chore surely?

Mikey, I am not sure, but if you ask your router's DNS server to pass clients hostnames connected via DHCP, it might work. I saw this setting on my router the other day. I am using a Dreytek Vigor2820n.

Just a thought....

Re: soldering IDE connector back to 1200 MB ?

@328gts

I am not sure about that, my Wella 12watt iron would do that no problem. I must admit it you are using a huge great big iron, then you will probably have a problem. Try something like:

http://www.antex.co.uk/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=180&P_ID=965

With a soldering iron like the above I would be happy even doing SMD soldering:

Re: soldering IDE connector back to 1200 MB ?

@328gts

I don't understand the question really mate, surely you push the pins through the board and then solder each one with some solder and a standard iron?

If you can't push the pins through the board,then it is likely the board or the pins need removing of the solder that was on there previously.

Looking at the A1200 board, the IDE connector is not surface mounted, so the job /should/ be a doddle.

Re: Powering a BPPC 68060?

@Rudei

060 is fine in an desktop 1200, it runs cooler than the 030 and 040. The issue is the PPC bit, baby!

Re: Unrealtournament 99?

@tommysammy

I remember playing UT 99 on the Amigaworld tournaments. Magic and DaveyD (maybe others) made some custom levels and the contests were out of this world. I would love to get back into that if we can get the game server sorted again....

Population

Very busy right now so sorry for the not-so articulate post:

I wanted to ask SOMEONE... They keep going on about climate change and food shortages. Why isn't there ever a campaign for limiting the number of births globally? The reason this planet is in such a state is becuase their are too many people.... I heard on the news yesterday by 2050 there will be something like 2 billion more people, how can this be right?

I know there are a lot of people who will say "its our human rights to have as many children as we want" but I don't think it is. If we have an ultimate responsibility to protect the future generations, I think we should all be limiting the birthrate.

Humans are becoming a disease on the planet. The only thing that will stop us is a better, harder disease to wipe us ignorant, selfish creatures from the ecosystem.

Since 1950, we have almost tripled the population. We are simply multiplying too quickly and living longer and I think this should be the biggest debate on the street and the gravest issue given airtime by the media, and yet, as obvious as it is, I seldom hear the population growth needs to be curtailed.

When will we wake up? No one needs more than 1-2 children. I see programmes on TV of people having LOTS of children and ironically enough, sometimes they are the least equipped to care for them (unemployed, resident in developing country etc).

Some shack pics:

My FT-857D with LDG AT-100Pro ATU, Palstar SP30 Speaker, Yaesu MD-100 Microphone, Yaesu YH-77STA Headphones, Kent Twin Paddle Key, MyDEL MP-8230 22-25 AMP Power Supply:

My Antenna "farm", Diamond CP6, Diamond X-50N, 20M End-fed Long wire connected to Tuner via LDG 1:1 Current Balun:
http://www.lrgsoftware.com/mike/m0saz_cp6_x50_eflw.jpg

A closer look at the CP6, notice how the far left radial has the adjuster almost all the way in! I managed to get 200KHz of bandwidth on 80 Meters using this configuration and the AT100Pro. (3.5-3.7MHz - for 3.7-3.8MHz I can use the long wire). For those who don't know the CP6 is very narrow on 80 Meters, but with some help from the tuner, I managed to get 2 thirds of the band:
http://www.lrgsoftware.com/mike/m0saz_cp6.jpg

A closer look at the Diamond X-50 and the end fed long wire:
http://www.lrgsoftware.com/mike/m0saz_x50_eflw.jpg

The long wire goes to the bottom of the garden, attached on the far-most linen line post. The long wire "hot" end is made from the inside of RG58:
http://www.lrgsoftware.com/mike/m0saz_eflw.jpg

Not having a lawn at this QTH means the counterpoise for the long wire is less than ideal, but electronically better than nothing. It is 6mm earth cable, connected to 4x meter long earth rods, 3 are galvanised and one is copper coated steel:
http://www.lrgsoftware.com/mike/m0saz_counterpoise.jpg

Took a couple of shots from the alleyway, as the sun was behind me:

http://www.lrgsoftware.com/mike/m0saz_cp6_2.jpg
http://www.lrgsoftware.com/mike/m0saz_cp6_3.jpg

The feeder on the CP6 and the long wire is RG-213, and I have put a snap-over ferrite clamp on each end, as close to the PL-259 plug as possible. The collinear is fed with Westflex 103 and is connected with N-Type plugs at both ends.

The PL259 plugs I got were excellent, they had a compression-type fitting to the back of them, like an N-Type. I got some basic ones too, but opted for the pro looking ones, once I worked out how they went!

Sorry the pics are a little grainy, they were taken on my camera phone. Will let you know how well the setup is working when the conditions are right. I may put out a few YouTube videos of any interesting QSOs.

Lastly, for those interesting in modifying radios:

Amiga.org

Not sure if A.org needed to change their site but I don't like it at all. I personally will not be visiting it as regularly as I used to until it has a similar look and feel to the previous incarnation of it.

It used to be the "big 3", o.org, aw.net and here, now I am not sure.... a.org looks like a much smaller site now....

Am I being too fussy?

Hi Tommo, I don't think they made a MK5 Blizzard 030, I think the last revision was 4.

@Snuffy

Yeah sorry about the quality. The camera is not good for broadcasting. The last part of the video was done much later in the night so I was rather tired.... I will get better (and so will my equipment).
