Re: New amigans.net bugs

@all

Just tried to PM kas1e but found that in the "To:" field I can't scroll down past the first users that begin with letter C, so no way to write PM to anybody else (the field doesn't allow manually writting the receiver's nick).

Edit: Using Opera 11.10, Debian amd64.

@kas1e

When you write a new PM, below the message body you have a preview button, and below that, you have a "Yes" or "No" option to save a copy in your outbox, and below that the "Submit", "Clear" or "Cancel Send" buttons.

So I think you HAVE to select yes to save a copy in your outbox BEFORE sending the PM.

The savebox I think is for saving (moving or copying, don't know which one) messages from inbox (maybe outbox also?) for storage there.

Just notice now : I not have in my "outbox" any of PMs which i send. It is bug, or i need somethere change some settings ? For my imho , any PMs which use send, should be automatically stored in the OutBox , and should be shown when user just press on Outbox.

When you write a PM you have to choose an option for "Save a copy in your outbox?" (at the end of the editing window).

But I agree, it would be better if by default sent messages are saved automatically.

Just found image->transform->rotate. That worked. What's the difference from the 2 ways to rotate?

The first one rotates the layer and the second way rotates the image. I think.

@TSK

Original idea was to keep it as simple as possible so I don't have to put too much time and
effort into it. But then I went crazy and started to add more features into it.

So, you are still going crazy with YAD? GOOD!! Thanks for the improvements. Wish I can try it. Maybe by the time I have a new AOS4 machine YAD will be mature enough to replace WB.

@Snuffy

I've notice some of Magellan like features of the Workbench 'cloner', nice!

I thought it was running Filer in one of the snapshots.

YAD looks very nice and useful. I think it could be a great WB replacement at some point.

@cha05e90

So you can specify to search for a specific string (as you see in a hex editor) for a type of file to associate it with an icon and tool, using DefIcons in 3.x, without using datatypes?

Sorry, I missed that, I was spoiled by DOpus

If that is the case, then I don't see the problem. Predefined Filetypes (for DefIcons) with OS4 and anyone can define new ones as needed.

@TSK

But can DefIcons determine the file type by its content (as filetypes in DOpus Magellan)? I don't have a working AOS4.x machine now and don't remember that bit, but I do remember using filetypes by content extensively with Magellan.

@gregthecanuck

What about a system like DOpus Magellan's filetypes? I liked that very much. You could have files identified by extension or content. In the case of scripts, perl and python scripts have this at the beginning to identify them
#!/usr/bin/perl
#!/usr/bin/python
so use that to associate the script to perl, python or arexx and run it in shell when double-clicked.

That could be extended to shell usega I think. If the S bit is set, then the shebang will cause the script to run in the proper interpreter, right? If not set, the filetype system should detect the type and run it using the associated deficon and tool.

And it could be also nice if then, automatically, sets the S bit for the script and/or creates an icon for it (for the tool and to run in shell).

@ChrisH

It is listed here, with and example like what you want to do, if I understood it correctly.

If Format:  If NOT/S WARN/S ERROR/S FAIL/S EQ/K GT/K GE/K VAL/S EXISTS/K
Purpose
: If condition is true execute following commands until an ELSE or ENDIF occurs.
Example: IF WARN, IF $count GT 10, IF EXISTS C:List

YAD is looking very good!

Can it be used in Workbench replacement mode (like DOpus Magellan?)

@poweramiga

Hope you can bring it back to life.

I haven't been able to do so with mine. Tried a new battery, a new PSU, tested my gfx card in other machine... Next will be to find an old machine to test the memory module.

Good luck to you!

@all

A little off-topic, but, is it right to use the USB ports directly from the PC to power such things as fans, lights and the likes? Could that damage the USB ports? Maybe better to use a powered hub for those things?

While it might be OK from a legal point of view, Hyperion might worry about upsetting Cloanto? I don't see why it *should* upset them, but who knows the politics?

Yes, I thought about that. But Cloanto can provide the previous versions and also their licensed software. Both would benefit I think. The possibility of running old versions of AmigaOS with legal software under UEA in AOS4.x, as you said, it could be a huge selling point for many ex-Amigans now that neww hardware is coming out.

@djrikki

Workbench surely needs some (a lot?) of work to make it modern. Maybe that is also something they are working right now as part of the MAP? A reworked Workbench or a new one?

I really missed Dopus Magellan when started to use AOS 4.0.

No, agreement mentiones only OS 4.x and beyond, KS files are not mentioned. And as much as we tried, in copyright mambo-jumbo (seen in Free Amiga page) Cloanto is only one legally selling them, as well as OS 3.x disks and some productivity software.

Yes, it is mentioned, as far as I understand the agreement (I consider Kickstart to be part of the OS). From the definitions, item n:

n. "Software" means Amiga OS 3.1, which is the Operating System (including without limitation its Software Architecture as described in the Documentation) originally developed, owned and marketed by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) for their Amiga line of computers in 1994.

And item b of Grants:
"Without prejudice to any Existing License Agreements listed on Exhibit 1, the
Amiga Parties hereby grant Hyperion (at Hyperion's sole expense) an exclusive,
perpetual, worldwide and royalty-free, transferable right and Object Code and
Source Code license to the Software in order to use, develop, modify,
commercialize, distribute and market the Software
in any form (including through sublicensing), on any medium (now known or otherwise), through any means (including but not limited to making AmigaOS 4 available to the public via the internet) and for any current or future hardware platform.

So it seems to me, an out of the box AOS 3.1 setup for AOS 4.x as Kotler suggests is ok for Hyperion. For previous versions, that's where Cloanto fits (also for other software that Cloanto includes in Amiga Forever for which they has license).

Why not? With the upcoming release of the SAM460 and X1000 we surely get new drivers and, I imagine, bug fixes. Maybe some new features also for all previous machines (A1s, PEGs and SAMs).
