Re: Payback on OS4.1 guide
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

So I gave this a try again, haven't done that in a couple of years. As usual, following this guide it works fine with software rendering but I thought that since AOS 4.1 FE is here I should try Warp3D and what a horrible experience it was :( .

The menus looked ehm... I've never tried LSD or drugs at all but they talk about seeing colours so... that's what it looked like.

Then the game started and there it looked better but man was it sloooooow! And no it wasn't perfect, glitches everywhere.

So... I'm not trying to insult anyone but seeing how much work that's been put to Warp3D and the fact that it will be replaced eventually, shouldn't it be more compatible with the older games written using it? On my A1 XE I can't help but thinking that it should be way faster than on my old a4k, not way slower!

A few games that's been recompiled like Quake 2 works fine but most older games doesn't and several newer aren't playable because of them being too slow. On the A1 XE games like Freespace 2 and most newer ports are too slow.

Any reasons for why it's slower than on my a4k and why some games just never seems to work ok again? What happened with Warp3D when it was ported from AOS 3.x to AOS 4.x? It pretty much became a slow, buggy mess or so it seems in some/many cases. Freespace 1 and Quake 2 runs very well though.

I might be stupid but how do you update your classic h/w to 4.2?

Also why would AOS 4.2 run worse on one core than the current version?

You can mount the AOS 4.1 upd 1 ISO with diskimage and find the files there.

@KimmoK

If you haven't already consider buying DVPlayer, it's really very good and written specifically for AOS 4. What it does and how it does it works really well. If I watch some movie in AOS 4 and it works with DVPlayer I always use it first because of the quality. Just a tip. I like MPlayer as well but there are no version that are without issues just yet.

Sorry, I'm using it from shell. Just trying to get it to use fullscreen with the .uaerc config file.

Is it possible to run this in fullscreen and what should the settings be? I've read the docs and tried different settings but it always runs in a window.

Would be nice to have this version for AOS 4 even though the old versions play well still. The new savesystem sounds nice. A classic! Thanks for posting this info.

It's been a long time (many years) but Toaks found a solution which would make it run under AOS 4.0 in software mode. It was posted over at amigaworld.net and I tried it and it worked. Change of tooltypes IIRC. I haven't read about anyone making it run on AOS 4.1 though so I don't know if it's possible.

@gerograph

On my A1 G4 XE machine it's slow all the time and not usable. It crashed the first run and after a reset it worked but really slow all the time. It brings back memories from runing Netscape under MacOS using Fusion on my a4k and AGA... Probably with analog modem.

Anyway, it wasn't faster now from when it was released on my machine. I have to admit though that it is kind of cool to see the FF GUI on AOS and that it is working :)

The cursour gets stuck to the left below the text and when you hit space the word gets moved to the correct position and then to the left beneath the text. I can sent you an e-mail but I am not sure that you will see what I mean from the picture.

Just installed #904 and I can see several errors/bugs. Pressing RA+T makes NetSurf open a new window. Using the "About..." option under "Project" menu opens a requesters and when pressing "OK" a new requester opens with the text "Unknown". The last issue is that while Im typing right now... cant explain it but the cursor are jumping moving... in a weird way. Staying to the left beneath the rest of the text.

copying messages doesn't work here, it would've helped but when adding a bookmark I get "Componenet returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nslTransactionManager.doTransaction]
nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location. JS frame :: resource:///modules/PlaceUlUtils.jsm :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 1393" data: no]

I deleted the old folder, extracted the archive to my SYS:Internet folder. It's using the SFS1 filesystem.

Re: Should Amiga OS4.x runs on Mac with PPC?

Why not see what's good and what's bad about this idea.

The good:

- People who already got a PowerMac that just collects dust can make use of it. It's easier to pay 200 euro for AOS 4.1 than any price for the currently available hardware. Price does scare some people away.

- More developers hopefully.

- More people will see AOS meaning PR.

- New life in the community.

- New potencial buyers for new hardware.

The bad:

- Will compete with the X1000 and SAM line of computers. How much of a problem is this? First of all, are there that many PowerMacs available? Also like already mentioned they are getting old and both the SAM 460 and the X1000 got PCI-E and faster RAM and also they are new.

- More time put on porting AOS 4 to new hardware = slows down development.

To me the good outweighs the bad but then it's not my money so who am I to decide if it's a good idea or not. I would be very happy offcourse since I got a PowerMac and new users is a good thing for the reasons listed. Yes IMHO.

Re: Transmissioncli

@samo79

rwo did the GUI and afxgroup did the other part (the program, the shell part). afxgroup did the cli-port alone so he is the guy who ported it to begin with and also with the latest version that also got a GUI thanks to rwo. Makes me a little sad that one, it looks really good but doesn't work at all here.

@Thematic

Good to read that someone is trying . I wonder if kas1e would be interested? I don't know how the torrent-situation is on MOS or AROS but maybe it could benefit all flavours even. To be able to download things using torrents is one of those "basic needs" that AOS kind of lacks at the moment (partly) so it would be good to have a new port of transmission available.

Re: Transmissioncli

I've found transmissioncli to work best. When it actually works download speeds are as good as it gets on my old A1 XE. Nothing to do other than either wait or follow certain suggestions to get off the lazy ass and start porting software yourself. I'd give it a try if I only knew where to begin and the easiest way to port it.

But that would only be part of the solution, don't know how to make magnetic links work. From what I've read some newer torrent clients supports them so maybe a newer port is enough.
