However, the "dongle code" is stored in the U-Boot ROM and is checked to make sure the OS is running on an A1 and not some other hardware.

This is very much like the Kickstart and Workbench Disk scenario we have with the classic Amiga.

Is it not possible for Amiga to port OS4 to an FPGA board with a soft PPC - like the uC-Linux boards I see selling for $160?

Amiga Inc could license a dongle for it.

I know where you're coming from.

I had all my eggs in the TI 94/A basket and then TI abandoned us all to oblivion.

Luckily the Amiga came along at an opportune point but not before I had invested some, not inconsiderable, amount of money into the Texas.

My sister used to own an Atari ST at that time. We always argued about what the better computer was.

That is interesting! My younger brother of two years bought a 520ST some time after I bought my A500. We had big arguments over the computers and he turned increasingly vitreolic and vile towards me and my family.

I ended up having a nervous breakdown which I believe was a direct result of all this. I believe he was so eaten up with jealousy over my A500 that he went out and bought the ST in sheer malice and spite. Luckily I was saved (physically, emotionally and spiritually) by the Jehovah's witnesses from the Kingdom Hall 2 blocks away. I haven't spoken to my brother since this time (1989) and I have been told by God that the devil used my brothers' Atari as a conduit to take his soul.

I don't have a grudge against Atari users in general.

You are kidding right?

The alternative was a peecee running with 4 colours, sixteen if you were lucky and a rasping beep sound. The operating system was MSDOS 2 or 3 and you could run Digital Research GEM if you were a masochist.

I agree with the Sister that Workbench 1.x was out of this world when it appeared in the shops running on an A1000.

The whole package was more futuristic than the science fiction films of the time. I remember configuring 'Say' to sound like HAL from the movie 2001. I used to try and get it to say;
"I'm afraid I cannot do that, Dave".
I used to invite friends round and say to my Amiga, "Open the pod bay door HAL".
Later, I would program all the phrases spoken by HAL into my Amiga. "Just a moment!, just a moment!, "I'm losing my mind Dave", "I can feel it".

Al in all, I really do believe that for productivity, you just can't beat WB2.05. I am yet to see something out there that can compete with this sublime Operating System.

If Retrogeek can find me a decent A2000 then I might try 3.1 - he advises that the A2000 is the best machine to run this on - but deep down I believe that I will probably go back to 2.05.

In this case, I will probably return to my A600 because it is a very convenient size and I never use the keypad.

Yes of course.

No, to be honest I didn't check the battery!

The card was brand new so I didn't check the battery - I will do this over the weekend.
My kickstart and OS is 2.05

I believe I read somewhere on the world wide web that it had closed down for good and that none of the material was available.

What I am looking for is a similar site but concentrating on productivity software.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I connect to the Internet and the World Wide Web using my A600 via pcmcia ethernet to my netgear ADSL firewall router.

Even with this high level of security I still need to be on constant alert for fishing sites and freakers.

I use 1.3 and 2.05.

For productivity I mainly use my A600 with 2.05.

I prefer using the 'stock' OS instead of 'mucked up' and 'patched' versions.

I know where everything is!

Wow!
It takes a '60 as well.

I think you got a bargain there.

I often hanker after the upgradability of big box Amigas - there is nothing much I can do with my A500 or A600.

I am being talked into buying an A2000 by a guy called Retrogeek I came across on Ebay - I am wavering but he makes his points well and I am now 85% convinced.

The A2000 sure is the most undervalued machine in the Amiga family. The build quality is fantastic. They were over engineered and Commodore lost money making them. By contrast all the other models (even my beloved A500) were starved of resources and were shodily built.

Hi again!

Thank you all for your answer's and tips.

Great!

It's fantastic that another Amiga has been wrestled from the claws of death and is amongst us again.

This is joyous news, indeed.

What a wonderful response from all our fellow Amigan.net anigans - three cheers!

I think there are some students in England working on this.

I seem to remember googling to an update on this recently.

I have just tried Aweb on Amigakit - fantastic!

Amigakit rocks!

Not only are they the best Amiga dealer ever - they also put an entire PC Amiga package together that makes AIAB look like a load of trash.

Rockon!

I bought one of these from Amigakit a few months ago.

I haven't been able to get the RTC to save the time and date - I was wondering if there is anything different I have to do - I am used to the A500 clock.

Wow!

I'm impressed.
The windows part of the installation was silky smooth - it
automatically found my AmigaForever files.
Then the Amiga part of the installation kicked in....
WOW!
installed like a dream and gave me the best Amiga desktop ever!
The only heart stopper was when it asked for a license key -
then I realised this was for DOPUS - Doh!

Well, what can I say - quality, quality, quality!

I have friend out west - he is something of a celebrity (to say the least)
- I will be installing this Amigakit on his Peecee - I already
told him about this site - he told me this afternoon he thought it was swell.

Anyway - this is far out! Hell - I answered my own topic here!
I'm off exporing Amikit.

I think it looks just fine.

I have looked at the other banners and I think it should stay the way it is.

The existing banners lend the site a touch of class whereas the new banners look a little gawdy, IMHO.

I saw Amigakit here on this site and am downloading it now.

I intend to install it to run with my Amiga Forever 2006 - do I have to watch out for any problems?
