Re: Guide for New A1222 Users

@davec555

I appreciate the kind words! I hadn't really considered writing a guide for the X5000 since it's fairly established and just about everything works there. In fact all the software in my lists by definition run on my X5000. It would be nice if someone who was a better writer than I would consider writing a nice, comprehensive user manual for new users. There are the beginning of this in pieces over at wiki.amigaos.net, but it needs a ton of work.

I think I read somewhere that is possible to use asterisk as a wild card. I haven't tried it yet, but that would help a lot on this, right?

Also, you might want to provide a blacklist file for the users who don't like to make things themselves.

I'll give that wildcard thing a try later today. In the interim you'll find a ready-made blacklist linked on the applications compatibility page. It is also linked on the Tips and Tricks section, too. The latest version can always be found here:

Per a reader's request I've added a new Tips and Tricks section to my A1222 Guide. I hope folks find it useful. The Guide now includes the following sections:

1. Introduction
2. System Build
3. Disk Options
4. Recommended Software
5. Comprehensive Applications Compatibility List
6. Comprehensive Games Compatibility List
7. Tips and Tricks
8. Benchmarks and Performance
9. Online Resources

Enjoy, and thanks for the feedback!

@daveyw

Thank you for your kind words. The SDBackup utility is actually provided by the AOS4 team, specifically Tony Wyatt. I'm not sure when I picked it up -- if it's not in the current AOS4 release, then it should be in the next. It's been very convenient.

That I cannot confirm one way or another. I only know that Odyssey is not in my LTE blacklist, so if it's not running with LTE, there's not really anyway I would know. It works fine either way.

Is Odyssey works issues free now ? I mean same fast start, no issues with opening pages/images/etc as on all other platforms ?

I remember we chat somedays ago that Odyssey didn't fits in some 64mb region or so, so can't be use by LTE emulator, and so, slow ? It's still the same ?

Works very well for me. In fact there doesn't seem to be any problem with running it with LTE emulation. I certainly wouldn't recommend it for sites with heavy JavaScript, but then again, that's the case for the SAMs, too.

With the various OS updates over the years, it is as stable as on my Pegasos 2, for example. Your work is hugely appreciated!

That's terrific to hear, Joerg. The reason I didn't file a report was, at the time, the understanding was SFS was not going to receive any updates going forward. If you're interested in doing bug fixes, I'd love to help you debug this.

Thanks, guys! If people are looking for what the A1222 feels like in real usage, I did a demo back at AmiWest 2021 that gives a walk-through of games and video and all the rest.

A1222 production now underway!

Breaking News: A1222+ production underway through a 3-way agreement with ACube Systems, AAA Technology and A-EON Technology

Cardiff: 29/06/2023

In an exciting collaboration of Amiga technology companies, ACube Systems, AAA Technology and A-EON Technology have come together to announce the production version of the long awaited A1222+ computer.

This joint effort brings a new era of collaborative computing for Amiga enthusiasts by leveraging the expertise and resources of the three companies. The A1222+ is custom designed to run AmigaOS 4.x and also supports compatible Linux PowerPC operating systems as well as AmigaOS 3.x under emulation.

The motherboard’s compact and robust design is powered by NXP’s QorIQ P1022 dual-core PowerPC processor running at 1.2 GHz. It is supplied with version 2.3 of A-EON’s Enhancer software package which includes advanced video and graphics drivers and a whole host of updated applications, utilities and datatypes. ACube Systems have already successfully produced updated A1222+ v1.3 prototypes and will manage the new motherboard production and testing while AAA Technology will act as the main distributor for the new Amiga machine.

Enrico Vidale, Matthew Leaman and Laurent Zorawski, the CEOs of the three companies expressed their enthusiasm for this collaboration. They jointly stated, "We are excited to announce our partnership and the beginning of A1222+ production. By combining our strengths and expertise, we aim to deliver an enhanced computing experience for Next-Generation Amiga enthusiasts. This collaboration marks a significant achievement for future hardware and software collaboration between the companies."

Trevor Dickinson, who is funding the manufacturing run on behalf of A-EON Technology added,
“It has been a long and at times challenging task bringing the A1222+ to market. The project has been beset by delays and extreme world events which has resulted in component shortages and massively increased manufacturing costs. I am extremely grateful to ACube and AAA Technologies for helping to make the A1222+ system a commercial reality.”

Amiga enthusiasts who have eagerly awaited the A1222+’s commercial release can now look forward to its upcoming availability. Pre-orders for the A1222+ are expected to open in the coming months, with shipments set to begin shortly afterwards. Customers who committed to A-EON’s Early Adopter scheme will have first choice of refusal after which orders will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

Stay tuned for further updates as we explore the features, specifications, and availability of the A1222+.

With the official announcement today from A-EON that the A1222+ production run is now underway, potential owners might be interested in how well it works, what performance is like, what quirks to know, and so forth. I've put together a QuickStart Guide to answer all of those questions as well as provide a full reference point on compatibility issues. Re: What is the current situation with printing in OS4 on real hardware?
Not too shy to talk

@thread

I have one of those multi-function HP OfficeJet printers, and it works great with the PhotoSmart driver and netprinter.device -- but many OS3 programs don't work well with it. PDFs print perfectly, though. Is there a way to easily generate a PDF from something like FinalWriter using the PostScript driver and then using GhostScript to convert it to PDF?

Basically here is the workflow I imagine:

1. Use any program that support PostScript printing (should be all of them)
2. Print to PS file
3. Convert file to PDF
4. Use script to ftp PDF to printer

If I automate it then I get easy printing every time from whatever program supports AmigaOS printing. Just need to fill in the details.

@tonyw

Thanks for the DiskSpeed updates, Tony! I am a little surprised there isn't a bigger delta in performance between your NVMe drive and my SSD. The numbers posted below are from a X5000/20 with a Samsung EVO SSD attached to the on-board SATA interface. The volume under test is a 400GB NGFS\01 partition on that disk:

@kas1e

Deron is selling both versions 4 and 5 for AmigaOS 4. The latter is somewhat buggy, but he is still selling it. Should I add a note regarding it? Or maybe just refer to version 4.1.5.6 which is the last one that actually runs well?

Thanks for looking at the list, by the way.

I'm looking for additions, deletions, corrections, etc. You're welcome to PM me here or reply in this thread. Thanks for the feedback!

@MigthyMax

I am both staggered at your immense creativity and skill, and immensely saddened that it was literally easier to backwards-engineer AmiStore than it was to get usable support from A-EON. I can think of nothing that better summarizes the state of NG Amiga computing today in terms of the community compared with the rights holders for software.

The fact that support is this bad should be a mark of shame for A-EON and AmigaKit, and I say that as someone who deeply appreciates all they've done in the past and really likes the people involved. No customer should ever have to go to this extent to simply purchase a product.
