@orgin
Using it now and it's looking good. Thanks Joerg for the update.
Seems to be a bit nippier at loading pages or is that just be imagining things?

My question for others using Dosbox on the SAM, is what settings for sound are in your config file? I can't seem to get sound working for some games.

@hotrod Hmmmm, I've only *just* installed LimpidClock as of two days ago, after my initial testing of Dosbox and obviously before last nights second attempt..... I'll disable it tonight and re-run my tests. I hadn't considered it might be impacting things so thank you for the heads up!

@corto
Firstly thanks for porting Dosbox to OS4!
As for it's performance on the SAM, well, I've not had much luck so far with getting Cannon Fodder running smoothly. Have mucked about with the CPU cycles a lot and no joy.
Doom and Doom 2 run at a crawl, yet I didn't expect them to run well!
Xenon seems to run OK though!
I'm planning on trying other games in the next couple of weeks.

DosBox on SAM?

What sort of luck have people had getting games to run well using DosBox on SAM?
I'm experiementing with it at the moment, trying to get games like Cannon Fodder running well, with little success.
For games such as Cannon Fodder the mouse jumps all over the place (and seems to want to stay at the side of the screen!)and I get no sound. I didn't think Cannon Fodder would be too taxing on the machine!
I've been playing with all the settings in the config file, with limited success. What setting do others use in that file on the SAM?

I got my 7th Quest CD's through today and set about trying to run it through SCUMMVM
The first disk doesn't contain the files that SCUMMVM will pick up. Disk 2 does however.
However when you start the game it comes up saying insert disk 1 and won't move any further, even if you insert disk 1 into the Amiga.
I have tried Assigning 7TH_GUEST_1 to the directory on my Amiga containing all the CD files from that disk and no joy.
I tried editing the game set up in SCUMMVM and add in an extra path pointing to disk 1's location and again now luck.
Anyone else had this problem?

The only thing stopping me from using the free Q2 port is an error "Vidplay: unknown command Vidplay failed returncode 10"
I've tried searching for Vidplay on Aminet and OS4depot (no joy) and the only mention of it on Google (for the Amiga) is the src files released by Hyperion for Quake 2 and they seem to be pre-compiled C code from what I can tell.

I've got Quake up and running on my SAM, and this has wetted my appetite for Quake 2. I know Hyperion did a port, but can you buy that anywhere? Hyperion don't sell it, neither do Amigakit Tis a shame no-one seems to have done a free version of Quake 2 on the Amiga in the same vein as Quake 1. And how much money are Hyperion losing by not selling the games via download from their website? I've love to buy Heretic 2, Quake 2 etc from them

@Mason Brillant. I'd have *never* have thought to look in that directory!! Thanks Out of interest, can anyone tell me what DefIcons does in the Prefs draw?? Seems to be about defining file types or something.

Changing icons?

I'm in the middle of customising my Amiga with new icons etc. and am having great fun doing so, however for the life of me I cannot find where I would change the icon displayed when a USB memory stick or a DVD is put in, or change the icons for JPEGS or MP3's etc.
I thought DefIcons might be the application needed, but looking at it it isn't??
Finally is there a way to set the global opion to NOT hide MP3's and JPEGS by default? I keep having to go into Window - Show - All Files to see them, which is getting a tad annoying.

By Jolly I may have cracked it!!!! I tried a 3rd time to set up Samba ( you see I don't give up easily!), following the Samba Idiots guide again. 2 things I did differently which I may not have done 1st time; 1. I didn't install it on my home drive (called Amiga OS4) but instead tried Programs. The difference being the space (or lack of in the name). Not sure if this could make a difference? 2. The netbiois name for my machine in the smb.conf file may not have matched the name I gave the machine when setting up the Hosts in Internet Prefs. One of these two items has corrected the problem - no more annoying messages appearing and when I type Status I see nmbd listed My PC also see's the SAM on the network - yippee! However I am having some trouble with the PC being able to access the Amiga at this point, but I am busy reading through the rest of the idiots guide so a solution should come to be soon enough!

@Chris
"2. Connect an audio cable from the back from the CD-ROM drive to the audio header on the board (which is right at the back near the PCI slot if you have a 440EP)"
I had the same problem as Astral and thought about this, only to realise the DVD drive I bought had no such Audio connector on it!!!
Thankfully I have ripped all my CD's as MP3's so not being able to play CD's has been no great loss (however connecting my Amiga to my NAS using Samba has hit a brick wall, but that's another long story!).

@all I restored my Amiga to the pre-Samba state (deleted the Samba folder, copied across Services and Servers from the OS4.1 CD) and started again, this time trying this guide: http://amigaworld.net/modules/feature ... ?op=r&rev_id=154&cat_id=4exactly the same result. There are no log files at all in the Samba/log draw that is on my machine. Trying to enter http://localhost:901 in OWB just results in "Loading http://localhost:901/ failed" message. "Use SWAT in extended view mode to check if all configured paths do actually exist (extended view also shows default values which are not written to smb.conf)". I'm afraid I don't know how to use SWAT in extended mode I seem to be hitting a brick wall with Samba, tis very frustrating!!

My IP address query from yesterday came about as a result of me following the SAMBA idiots guide; http://homepages.tesco.net/michael.carrillo/amigasamba/index.htmlI've followed these instructions and have now reached the point whereby my PC can ping my Amiga and vice versa. Brillant 2 queries though; 1. This guide states, at the stage "testing your connections": "Finally, while you have a shell open, enter Status at the prompt (return) within the list that appears the words nmbd should be listed somewhere. If not check and double check your user-startup sequence." I have done this and do not see nmbd. I have checked, double checked and tripple checked my user-startup sequence and can not see anything missing as per the guide. Does anyone have any ideas? 2. I keep getting annoying Network log output dos windows saying "Server on port netbios-ns (137) is looping (1500 requests this minute alone) and has been disabled for a while", followed by "Server on port netbios-ns(137) has been enabled again" Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

Where can I find out the IP address of my Amiga or influence what this is set to?
I've looked high and low and have played around with the various commands in C and so far have come up short. I was hoping there was a command like IPConfig on Amiga!

reverse it? yikes, if I've ever given someone some advise that needs reversing then perhaps it's time to stop helping people!
It enables optimal settings for each device harddrive/dvdrw/etc which is plugged in to any of your SATA ports
Thank you. I do always like to know what something does and perhaps how to reverse it in the worst case scenario!
