Re: Crashes with OS4 Final

It may sound like a lot of work, but during beta testing (of 2.3 iirc) we had one crash bug which took forever to track down and in the end it was a bug in NewString (no suprise there!) which was only triggered when the cursor was set to flashing and the time delay was set to a certain value.

what value was that? I get a crash bug every now and again, maybe once a week, but apart from that its quite solid. I just changed my newstring prefs and turned the blinking off completely. It was set to 500ms I think.

@goody

They released the news at 31st March 11pm local time.

@thread

Sounds very promising doesnt it? I wonder what stage the OS4 negotiations are in between Amiga Inc and Hyperion. I dont have any insider info, but I'm guessing that Hyperion are working on a port while they wait for the Amiga Inc big wigs to give them the final stamp of approval.

I wonder how many people will actually go for the 400mhz 128mb machine for running OS4 though. Seems a bit too low end.

Anyway, well done ACube. I hope I can get my hands on one of these babys soon. :)

@Mikey_C

Just because we're not taking over the world doesnt mean we cant enjoy using our machines. Think about it. MPlayer plays most video formats, we've got Tunenet for internet radio and general audio playback, tons of emulators for old gaming (sega, nintendo, arcade, commdore), some basic but good internet software like SimpleMail, YAM, AmiTradeCenter, SAMBA,and my own WookieChat, music creation software like Bars'n Pipes, Horny, Audio Evolution, HDREC.. etc etc!

It's not the end of the world guys. :)

If you want a program to be made, you should really do it yourself. Begging for someone else to do it for you wont work.

@Jurassicc

Run MPlayer with this parameter:
-mc 0

If you use the MPlayer GUI, go to the "Extras" tab, and insert it in "Additional Parameters" string gadget.

I got this tip from the forums awhile ago.

Slightly off topic, but there was a charity fundraising event in New Zealand and Australia recently.. they renamed November to "Movember", and they had a nationwide contest to see who could grow the best moustache. Damn it, I would have killed it with my mo' if I had known about it in advance. (Takes a few weeks to get the growth going.. but once it kicks in, look out!).

"What the hell are you talking about jahc?"
oh I just noticed kens back to his moustache avatar again. :P

slightly off topic? ok, VERY off topic. :P

WookieChat 2.4.1 beta 5 - 27th Dec 2006

Not too shy to talk

http://wookiechat.amigarevolution.com/wookiechat/beta/ Latest: 2.4.1 beta 5 - 27th December 2006

Changes 2.4.1
-------------
- Attempt to fix up crashing when closing second networks
- Parting channels on the Serenity IRC network no longer crashes. This network for some reason doesnt follow the IRC RFC exactly, and it was affecting Wookie badly.
BETA 2
- The ignore function now ignores /notice messages
- Testing new smaller tab sizes.
BETA 3
- You can close the leftmost server tabs now. But it doesnt yet select another tab straight away, you have to click on another one yourself
BETA 4
- You can turn the smaller tab sizes on by running wookiechat with the "smalltabs" switch. i.e. "run wookiebeta_os3 smalltabs" It will default to the regular tab sizes
BETA 5
- No more Server tabs anymore! its still a little buggy, but give it a try anyway
- I'm now compiling with -03. That means optimise for speed. Previously I wasnt optimising on OS4, and only optimising on OS3 for filesize.

Helge? didnt you leave the Amiga scene? You keep coming on IRC and going on about how Amiga is just a hobby machine, and how the future is the new chips coming from Intel/AMD.. you keep trying to convince us to dump our machines..... or have you changed your mind again?

Re: Favourite Amiga

My cousins had c64's and I used to love playing the games when we would visit them. I finally got a c64 for my 10th birthday (in 1990). Candidate for happiest day of my life.

I finally got an Amiga 500 in 1992. The first game I played on it was just a crap shareware title (Crazy Sue 2) from a magazine coverdisk. I was instantly blown away by the superior sound. Later when I got some games, I was blown away by the quick loading and graphics. It was awesome. Then I started getting into the non-game side of things. Over time, I got a 2400 baud modem, an A590 hard drive with 20mb space and 1.5mb ram (we had to disable .5mb of ram because the ram chip was faulty), and a Workbench 2 ROM chip. It became an amazing computer to play with. I'd spend hours creating ANSI screens for my crap parttime BBS.

Eventually, I got an A2000. it had an 020 card, 120mb hard drive, and 3mb RAM. It felt SO FAST. I could finally experience this "multitasking" thing. I'd have tons of screens open at once. My workbench screen had awesome docks and was fully functional. I no longer ran out of hard drive space. THe previous owner had left a bunch of wavs and aiff's which I would show off over the phone. I'd get up at 7am and have a game of Dune 2 before school started. It was awesome.

After that, I got an A1200. Finally, I had AGA! Weird keyboard to type on at first, but I got used to it, like we all did. :) I got a 4mb FAST ram card for it later, and my Amiga experience was transformed again. I'd brag on IRC about how I had all my net software loaded at once with only 6mb RAM. I desperately wanted an 030, but didnt have any money to get it. :( My mother was funding my computer habit at this age.

Around this time, Phase5 were releasing their PPC addons. I calculated the cost of upgrading my Amiga to the extreme, and the cost of a cheap PC. I remember typing this list up in CyngusEd.. and, the PC prices won. :( I sold my Amiga gear, got a Cyrix 300mx, and my interest in computers died. I used my PC for WWW, IRC, and mp3's. At least the web was fast and in a nice resolution for once.

I got another PC in 2001, a decent one. Then in 2003 I got my AmigaOneXE, which is my main machine today.

For "best upgrade at the time", I'd have to vote on my A2000/020 :)

Since 2001, I've bought and sold a few machines, and have been given a few too. The other Amiga computers I currently own is an Amiga 4000/060, and an A1200/020. The A4000 is setup next to me on this desk. i keep meaning to download some scene demos for it. I've got maybe, 10 or so demos on it now. 3 of them are quite good. Though, I feel a little sad, because I never got to own an A4000 when those machines were in their prime. :(

Re: What features would you like on Amigans?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

I'd like two things that aw.net has..

On the front page, I'd like the individual numbered pages for threads.. So on the front page you could have:
Re: What features would you like on Amigans? 1, 2, 3, 4

.. and then be able to click on 3 to visit page 3 of the thread straight away.

Secondly, I'd like ALL page numbers displayed when you're inside the thread. Currently it shows the first 3 numbers, then "...", then the last page number. I often want to start reading the thread at the 2nd or 3rd to last page, and I cant do that. I have to click on the last page, and then go back..

I hope these two suggestions are possible. Thats what helped make aw.net the best setup amiga forums on the net I reckon.
