Re: Sam 440's potential upgrade path

@328gts

As far as I know. ACube has not released any developer documentation for the FPGA. And IIRC, it can not be re-programmed on board.
(And... IIRC, ACube has said that the FPGA is irrelevant to Amigans??? I wish they then make cost reduced version without any unusable chips.)

Some things that might be possible (if ACube delivers the needed info):

@Geoshaper

According to my understanding. To take use of xena is 100% up to third party developers. Do not expect A-eon to deliver more than the needed developer tools (hopefully).

@Helgis

If you still want to count CPU cores or processing threads, the number went just through the roof.
X1000 CPU / SoC has two cores for two threads.
Xena has one core more and 8 threads.
X1000 r700 GPGPU has minimum of 80 SPUs and maximum of 800 SPUs.

Amiga with hundreds of co-processors ... damn, it will be hard to think a nice name for every unit.

@LiveForIt

in your earlier post:
You forgot that almost every sold games console have a PPC chip/core(s).

I think embedded chips sell more than x86 desktop chips, in general.

So if PPC manages to have good position in embedded space, the future for Amiga desktop is good enough. (IMO, that is)

About AGA & timing:
I think HAM8 had advantages over everything on the market untill late 90's. It made Amiga the best platform for realtime high colour MOVING GFX.
But sure, 24bit should have followed quickly.
(they had the working prototybe of AAA)

@Helgis

To me it (just) seems that new embedded PPC SoC chips start to be powerfull enough to perform pretty well on dekstop. (for almost any desktop use/need)

But I'm 99% sure that PPC will not be back on desktop mainstream.

It might have some bigger chance on notebooks and other more mobile devices, if it manages to compete with ARM. This year is crusial, IMHO. If all next gen PPC SoC chips from all major PPC companies are in broduction at the end of this year, I'm sure a lot of companies will check them out carefully.

If everything goes well, PPC will be very good for Amiga niche, otherwise it seems that it is just "ok".

PS. I hope four core Titan core chips are available next year for A1X2000 ... ;-P

Re: CPU fan for Sam440ep-flex?

@jbni

Use the most silent one you can find, but preferably bigger one. Small ones are rarely silent, IMO.

I have a silent 80mmx80mm cooler blowing air over SAM440ep board and it makes the components a lot more cooler than without it.

Re: AmigaOne X1000 can use 6 cores at once???

@Helgis

x1000 can have 2 threads running on the CPU and 8 threads on the xcore. If one want's to play with weird terms.

@thread

Speculation about xcore's/xena's future use is fun but futile, untill we know exactly how it is connected and interfaced with. And what Mhz it runs, and ....

Bridge to legacy HW is interesting option (to PLAY with), just as an example.
A "cheap" NG videotoaster solution might also be possible. And some realtime sound effects handler.

What kind of FPS is reached in Quake3 on SAM440ep?

Re: Ram limit on Sam440ep

IIRC, PPC440 memory space is divided in two 512M areas, so, most likely, on SAM, the first 512M is used for RAM but the other is needed for the huge amount of I/O & industry features of the board.
