Re: What happened to all the files?!?

Errr, uuhhhmmm, yeah......

1. You know, when you buy a magazine, you can't buy just the pages you're interested in. A compilation is a "grab bag" of small things, that would be a waste of time to brand every little item, piecemeal.

2. When buying said "mish-mash*", some you will find handy, and some you will sock away in a drawer (), possibly never to be seen again.

* Not insulting the CONTENT!

3. We've been spoiled by a plethora of free software in the "big pool" out there, where they are forced to give away their software because of the competition, you know, 12 or more people make the same computer program available to the public.

4. They (pc/mac market) are inundated by games, SO, the coders resort to huge amounts of in-game advertising... Something that is impractical and just won't happen with Amiga software with our user community size.

I'd rather have software without advertisements in it.... Advertising is now EVERYWHERE!!!

5. I've written code before, and at times it's very fun, and rewarding, therapeutic even... and it can also be insanity inducing drudgery as well, not FUN. That would be dealing with the very boring parts of bug hunting and digging through manuals, changing the user display over and over, etc. etc.

Why is it that, so to speak, "intangible", digital data sets development is treated as NOT being "something" that is produced and sold, just like any other products available at stores?

However, I am tremendously guilty of this, though.

For instance, the amount of magazines (and comics) that I have read in book stores and supermarkets, if I had to come up with all the money right now to cover it (over $20,000 Can.), well, let's just say that I would be carted off to prison, immediately.

I don't want to start a political debate, because it's really the ECONOMY that is dysfunctional, that is the problem. Something that we could talk about day and night for the next 5 years and nothing would come of it because "you can't fight city hall" no matter what conclusion we came to here....

The bottom line:
Seriously? Do we just expect hundreds upon thousands of FREE programs, because we're staying with the near death, Amiga computer, which we all know and love.... that may have even been sabotaged by unknown conspirators into the abyss???

We need to financially support the people that are making these AmigaOnes of ours useful and relevant, until at least it can catch on again and go mainstream.

I do NOT enjoy using computers, in ANY form, other than my, ANY, AMIGA that I have access to.

I've "used" an ipad.... that was a miserable experience, I'll have you know. It's a toy, as far as what a real and genuine computer IS and REPRESENTS... and to this day ONLY Amiga has "figured it out and provided" said need in nearly exactly as it should be, fr me.

I'm using DarkBASIC to code in right now, and if it weren't for the fact that it's about 75% AMOS like, I would NOT be able to write computer software AT ALL.... I would be "outside, looking in".

I can't believe how lucky I am that AMOS was made for a computer that I find being as close to perfect, as may be possible.... and that <1% I consider not to be, hey, it's a COMPUTER.... Shape it to suit your needs.

Amiga computer software programmers want some money for their time spent plying their magic?

Why is that a problem???

Hey, what a dummy, me. I just now am paying attention to your avatar... That is brilliant! LOL!!!

And I love The Simpsons.

Know when I first heard of it? When I was watching The Tracey Ullman Show when it was still new episodes. I caught one episode, and didn't watch it any more. I didn't like it. However, later on (months later, probably), I was switching channels, and I caught the end of one of her skits and left it on the channel for some reason, and before the commercial came on they played a, maybe 40 second clip of "the Simpsons" and they were NOT "The Simpsons" at that time, in fact they didn't even have names, from what I found out later... They were using short segments just for filler to the commercial. That very first one I saw, I said "THAT SHOULD BE A SHOW!!!!!" It was really funny, and the way it was drawn combined perfectly.

I was "sold" just like that. If I had only had the money to invest!!!!!!!!!!!

I was HIGHLY sceptical of Futurama, when I heard the premise. However, after the FIRST episode, I saw episode 1 when it originally started, I was sold on that too. Pure genius!!!

Hi Everyone!!!

The way I see it is....

Amiga has stumbled and fallen. (In 1994 and ~1996.)

The second time, it was in no way, shape, or form enhanced!!!! It was the same OLD OLD technology from 1992.

Now what we have is a "rag tag team of stubborn zealots, pushing forward through a desert, at night in a sandstorm...."

And just who or what is "the competition"?

Well, windos has spent probably $100,000,000,000 on software coding. Yes, one hundred billion dollars US. Probably double that, even. And guess what, they have yet to make a product I want to use WILLINGLY. And if you add in all of the software from productivity and games outside of ms, well, that's just a number so high that a 32 bit CPU can't reach. And the other competition is Apple; they have $150,000,000,000 in cash reserves!!!!! That's right, one hundred fifty billion $$$ US! And the other, other competition??? One) they've been coding since 1992, and two) they have probably in the neighbourhood of 50,000 coders!!!!!!!!

Choice number two is over priced, and does NOT work as computers were first intended to. And that SEVERELY over priced "toy" yes, "toy", IpAD, does NOT impress me at all. (As long as it isn't AOS on there.)

Linux, still too complicated to use TO THIS DAY (20+ years later!!!), and doesn't have features that AOS has. Namely, the operating system is TOO BIG (and many, MANY other problems.)

Can you imagine that? ALL OF THAT going AGAINST Amiga, and I still want to use Amiga? They are SERIOUSLY doing something WRONG, or Amiga is just too damn right!

Many people think that I'm crazed, but why is it too much to ask for at least ONE electronic device, to "start" and "stop" at the press of a button? And to do what YOU want it to do? We are "living in the future" since 1985, when the first Amiga became available. Seems to me that, none of those other people are aware of that yet.

Question is, do they deserve my pity?

You know what? From the way I see it.... We are doing REALLY REALLY REALLY well.

We probably have the highest ratio of programmers to users, too. That's pretty cool, I say.

I will get the new fastest Cyrus that A-Eon make. I don't know when I'll be able to afford to buy it, but the day that I can, that is the same day that I will place my order.

Any company, coder, and/or user that is here, or was, impresses me immensely, well, unless after leaving they turn against us, that is.

I have to say, and I think it's okay to bring it up here, I do look forward to the Apollo Amiga old school computer becoming commercially available. It's basically what the NatAmi was going to be. That WILL bring Amigans out of the wood work. It will sell over 5,000 in 2 years. I hope that Hyperion will want to use the AOS3 source code they have and release a new version for it. For that to work, the two need to be released at the same time so that every Apollo motherboard purchased comes with the official AOS3.? upgrade.

What I'm saying is, I am "in" 4 the long, loooong haul!

P.S. It bothered me too, that we didn't find out about the netbook being cancelled for a long long time. However, look at the 3 competitors' capabilities. We are a speck of dust. Again I say, we are doing exceptionally good.

Hi KimmoK,

Yes, yes, all a joke, a big pathetic joke!

Had Amiga 1200 been a REAL 68030 computer at 14.24 MHz, and had AGA support 8 Chip Megs of RAM with 2 Megs chip and 2 Megs fast sold stock from the stores, and SIMM sockets on the motherboard so that you could add another 6 Megs of EACH on there!!!! (And a 68882 socket.)

Then NOBODY would have wasted CONSIDERABLE resources making 68030 accelerators. They would have jumped straight to 68040 and 68060 models.

It could have really used a VGA output too.

Things would have been VERY different today.

As well as, if you have 3 files with the same name, they'll all be over written by the most recent being moved there, unless the "d" or is it "e" protection bit is set, in which case it can't be overwritten to a file there already.

1. Nothing may ever? be released again that is as SWEET as AMOS Professional. ((( Absolutely BY FAR a computer programming language that ANYONE can learn! THE BEST LANGUAGE EVER ON THE BEST COMPUTER EVER MADE BY HUMANS! (Even that ibm computer on Jeopardy is a "hunk of junk" compared to Amiga, as in, who the heck is buying ibm (anything) for their home?)

2. I've seen some Blitz BASIC programs.... I CAN NOT learn that.

3. I've tried using ChrisH's Amiga E... Not able to use it at all. (Sorry Chris, as you have done GREAT THINGS for the new Amigas, no doubt about that.)

4. I bought the FULL package of Hollywood. It isn't easy to use. There was this, I think LAYERS command, and when I got to layer 5 or 6, with TRIVIAL amounts of text in the first 4 or 5 layers before it, my AmigaOne got REAL SLOW! Yes, yes, I compiled my program. And by trivial, I mean each layer had like 250 bytes of text each. Also, for the life of me, I wasn't able to figure out a way, when I erased a layer, to keep track of the new number sequence as each higher number dropped one unit. What I mean is, because they didn't have unique names, I couldn't print to the correct layer. And, I am using an AmigaOne XE, 800 MHz with 2 Gigs of RAM. I am not using a 9200 or 9250, however. I'm using the, I think, Radeon 7000 video card, that they came with originally?

Hi Hans,

Well, what an awful fluke that is.

Hey, I would never ever say that about you.... you're an Amiga legend!!!!

Thank you for being here 4 us!

And the long winded reply;

You see, the ipads/derivatives of the world have reduced "computers" to "applications devices".... It's not "real computing" as we used to do, well, we still are, aren't we?

That's why I came to hate the term.

However, the devices have their uses (I'm still not too fond of them), but they are going to destroy the market for genuine computers, because as sales decline, lowering it to a niche market, it will drive dedicated computer prices up.... Like WE need THAT!

I have used an ipad, and the novelty wore off, very, very quickly because I was locked out of the system, the programs are big, I even crashed it. I ran out of system memory and a program couldn't start, after 7 minutes of use, I kid you not! My friend who owned it was SHOCKED as he had been using it for over 9 months with it NEVER happening to him!

So, I bought this on clearance tablet. It has 1 GB of RAM (for sure) and 4 Gigs of storage I believe.... It's a Proscan 7 inch, with Android 4.1 (close enough), and has a single core 64 bit CPU running just over 1 GHz. IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!! The CPU is WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too slow, as it can't even display characters on the screen as I type them!!!! I can wait as long as 7 seconds for it to show what I typed, and at times it loses some of them. I stop typing because it isn't showing them, so I don't know how much it might buffer, but I've lost letters with as few as 10 typed in by me.

This I find extremely BIZARRE as it does (nearly) full screen video playback from a wireless connection 20 feet away going through a wall!!!! Mind you, it will at times pause or get choppy, trying to get data. That could be due to any number of things, though.

The chrome internet browser will often lock up too, even when I'm just on google typing in search terms!!!

Maybe the expensive 4 core ones are just way more reliable. It is a "no name" brand, and I often find, that those REALLY should be avoided, and had I known that "Proscan" was made by Curtis, I definitely would not have bought it.

CURTIS MANUFACTURES GARBAGE. And they have been around for over 15 years, easy.

Anyway, I haven't yet come to grips with what I can really do with it, as using it as at least a word processor is near impossible.

Hi kilaueabart,

I've seen a thread somewhere about people talking about boot up times on their AmigaOne X1000's and I think that some were able to get very fast boots, while others weren't able to get anywhere near their numbers.... Is it possible that the ones who couldn't, didn't have the compact flash card installed, or were simply not aware of it being there to use, and obviously, therefore, didn't???

So, by quite a wide margin, the 5040 is the fastest?

Well, I plan to get a Cyrus, only if I can afford that one.

You know, CPU advancement has slowed down quite a bit.

http://www.cpu-world.com/benchmarks/Intel/Core_i7-2600.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instructions_per_second

In the first link, you can see that the i7 4770K is 8.7%, 14.6% and 15.2% faster than the i7 2600 at 3.4 GHz. BIG YAWN! And win-dross 7 is SUCH the useless junk, that at 3.4 GHz it does NOT impress me ONE BIT, thus a 15% increase in speed equates to ZERO. In the case of win-dross, wake me up when CPUs are running at 30 (THIRTY) GigaHertz, and then MAYBE we could talk turkey. (Even the 12 GB RAM disk that I use on the windross 7 is a JOKE!)

The 5040 and RAM over 2 GB (I want 16, minimum) is close enough to an i7 2600 because when you combine the sleek and FUN TO USE AOS 4.2 ( .2,<-- hehe) it will FINALLY be "on-par" I would say, for even up to 3 years from now!!!!

Anyhow, bottom line is, I think I will have enough for the Cyrus 5040 in November on of this year, that being 2014.
