Also, per AmigaOldskooler's October roundup and Hyperion's (?) presentation at Amiga40:
• A proof-of-concept kernel for the Mirari has already been built. • After this show, Dave Koelman is shipping boards to Steve Solie and Thomas Frieden to begin the port of ExecSG to the Mirari board.

Would you post the make and model of your card...or a photo if it's not too much trouble? I'm very curious what is different about your setup. If it's not the card itself, then maybe others can pose some questions, as I'm not currently an X5000 owner. (Am considering either an X5000 or a Mirari when the money is available.)

No for me. Wasn't OS5 supposed to be built on top of QNX? Linux might have been a contender at one point, too? Given all the time that's passed and momentum lost, I'd just as soon do without proper memory protection (etc.) forever than cop out now.
But some communication from Hyperion, A-EON, AmigaKit, etc. on future plans would be a lovely change of pace...

@joerg Thanks, Joerg. Once again, you're an Amiga encyclopedia! :) Quote: Even in case it's more work, because there are more differences between PCI and PCIe SATA controllers from Silicon Image than between the 3 supported PCI ones, ACube could easily create a sii3132ide.device if they can licence Stéphane's sii3[15]1[24]ide.device driver sources as they already implemented SII3132 support in their Sam460 U-Boot.
Hmm, I might just run with that. As is always the case, the worst thing ACube can say is "no".

@billt
Yes, I asked Dave and Harald about the possibility of these "driverless" adapters working with BBoot 2024.
@all
A more general question, that only recently crossed my mind. Keep in mind that I have never owned AmigaNG hardware. How does OS4 deal with cards containing their own BIOS, like a bootable SATA card where you may want to enable/disable ports or features like RAID? I assume you're still stuck connecting it to a PC first?

Thanks for all the input! I also just pinged Dave and Harald privately to see if they have anything to add.
I wonder who wrote all the OS4 Silicon Image drivers? The SiI 3132 chip Sailor mentioned dates back to 2010, so I would think that's old enough to still have good ATAPI support. We just need real OS development again. :/

@sailorQuote: Better idea is to ask AmigaOS developers about SiI 3132 support.
That would work, too. Do you know if its ATAPI functionality is stable? As I said above, I have the impression that most (?) PCIe SATA cards have poor ATAPI support. Most of the OS4 drivers are 10+ years old, aren't they? So the driver selection is overdue for a refresh. Quote: If you want to have traditional PCIe slot instead M.2 slot, you can use M.2 NVME to PCIe passive adapter, something like this. I have never seen anything like that! I don't suppose there's an M.2 to PCI adapter, too? When the time comes, if I can't find a usable PCIe card, something like this would also work https://www.amfeltec.com/products/pci-express-to-pci-adapter/so I could just use an old PCI card instead. (And then I'd add a SCSI card, too.) But as before, I am concerned about "driver" support.

All my drives are still mechanical, so you made me look. M.2 is the form factor (can be notched three different ways) and can support either the traditional SATA protocol or NVMe, which is a sort of DMA for storage devices and utilizes PCIe directly without occupying a slot. NVMe can saturate up to 4 PCIe lanes, but in this case I'd expect each Mirari slot to get 1. An M.2 to SATA adapter might be okay, but per some previous comments, I'd be concerned that it's going to need a driver somewhere. Quote: LiveForIt wrote:
As for PATA, you can’t find CDROM in normal stores anymore with that, in my AmigaONE-XE I have a SATA CDROM, connected to a StarTech SATA to PATA adapter it works fine. Good to know, thanks. I've been using a PC laptop as my main computer for nearly 10 years and have enough old PATA optical drives that I'd still like the option of using them in a new tower. Would love my Amiga to be a "swiss army knife". :)

Musing over the Mirari board some more, the T2081 variant doesn't include SATA ports, only two NVMe slots. Additional storage would require a separate card, BUT using ACube's Hardware Compatibility List (is there anything better?), the only supported chips appear to be PCI, not PCIe, and Mirari is PCIe-only. What I'd really like is something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-SATA-PATA-PCI-Combo/dp/B002PXFZ2SInternal and external SATA plus a PATA connector for full backward compatibility. BUT I've read several places that PCIe SATA cards are really designed for hard drives, with poor ATAPI support, and to use an older PCI card instead. I'd likely be using this for optical drives exclusively. What to do? Before I ping the Mirari developers, can anybody offer words of wisdom? BTW, the Mirari USB3 functionality I'd asked about above comes via a dedicated chip. And if anyone is unaware, the project has a blog that's updated regularly: https://mirari.vitasys.nl/the-first-rebirth/

@DigitalDesigns Quote: DigitalDesigns wrote:Has the development of that web browser stopped? I talk to Oliver irregularly, and have no reason to believe that development has stopped. I do know he's found himself in a situation...either work or personal...where his free time is limited, and IBrowse has had to take a backseat. The AmiSSL updates AFAIK still come on time. If I had working Amiga hardware (plan is to invest in a Mac Mini M4 in the next few months and run QEMU), I would try debugging Google for you. The thing is, with the exception of technologies like AmiSSL, IBrowse is mostly a 25-year-old browser. There are so many new features that have appeared in that timeframe, that nearly anything could throw IBrowse off. The issue with Google could be something simple, or it could be something invented last year and convoluted...and built on top of yet other unsupported technologies. Maybe a web developer here will have a look and post an opinion? Oliver reads this site regularly enough, and perhaps he'll chime in shortly? I also hope IBrowse starts seeing regular updates again soon.

Right or wrong, I've carried the impression that the difficulty adding SMP support was because the developers were trying to make it work for legacy software. If it's a matter of bolting on new API's, I'm okay with that. There isn't such a mass of OS4-specific applications and games that the important software couldn't be rewritten/recompiled. I'll take any progress at this point.

@Hans Thanks. What confused me is that porting the JavaScript JIT (and apparently also the Webassembly engine...I see the Power64 Linux fans are still struggling with that) must be an order of magnitude more difficult than porting the rest of the browser. I'm assuming Timberwolf never had a JS JIT either. I also hadn't considered that the interpreter and the JIT are two discrete engines and that you can have one without the other. All good to know. I read a blog entry a year ago or more, which suggested that a well-tuned interpreter could rival a JIT. Wish I could find it now to get your opinion. As it stands, I'll side with you. @nubechecorre I still have faith in IBrowse, too.

What's the connection you're drawing between the CPU and JavaScript? I'm confused. CPU's/SOC's fold in new features periodically (cryptography, AI ?) but I didn't think anything JavaScript-related was among them.

Would you mind telling us a little more about the "offer" and where you bought your X5040? I've never heard of an upgrade offer like this. And the current supply of X5040's seems to be extremely expensive. Supply and demand?

Brainstorming about PCIE above, I recently realized I'd misunderstood the slot descriptions. I was taking Quote: PCIe x4 slot with one lane occupied (T10x2 PCIe 2.0; T2081 PCIe 3.0)
as meaning the x4 slot had one lane used ("occupied") for something else, so 4-1 = 3 available lanes. Oops. So the PCIE splitter I listed would never work because it relies on separating the individual 1x lanes. Assuming the term "Serdes" is synonymous with "PCIE lane", the T1042 and T2081, and the other processors in this class, are all a bit starved for support. Only eight lanes each to work with. But I guess that's the definition of "compromise". I also don't see anything in the specs that mention USB 3.2. Everything is USB 2...and I did browse a lengthy data sheet. What am I missing?

@balaton Thanks for the reply! Quote: Quote:With an NVMe adapter and networking and sound on the motherboard, there may not be much need for extra cards, but do PCIe splitters often/sometimes work without firmware or drivers? Any such remaining cards might be satisfied with one lane each, and a PCIe 4x splitter like this Same as above, needs driver and also kernel support. I think this was addressed in the (yet unreleased) pegasos2 kernel so it may be possible to write bridge driver, question is if they are willing to port AmigaOS to this board. Things that are plug and play on Linux are not necessarily work on other OSes. They work on Linux as it has drivers for a lot of hardware. Maybe the manufacturer is expecting a driver module in the Linux kernel? Mmm, hadn't considered that. Quote: Quote:As development proceeds I would be curious if anybody (maybe only Geennaam himself?) could venture a guess as to the nature of the X5000's DMA issues. Because A-Eon and Hyperion aren't talking. What does Geennaam have to do with X5000? It's A-Eon's board so they have to find out. I figured the architecture is similar enough that they might eventually stumble on the answer. That is, if they perform Linux DMA tests comparing the Merari with the X5000 and find both are similar, then maybe it's a limitation of the SoC ? Quote: AFAIU it isn't Geennaam's project but Skateman's primarily with Geennaam helping with design and development but he does not have to care about how it will be produced or what will happen afterwards. Oh, I hadn't realized that! Then kudos to them both for undertaking this project!
