Re: Running my OS4 games on QEmu

I remember on qemu-dev channel there were some patches about implementig fpu call in hardware mapping 1:1 powerpc with isa of cpu host.

Problem is related about how powerpc fpu flags works, a full implementation slow down a lot emulation so for now all is based on soft-floats and their 100% accurate results.

Someone should really take over these patches and implement these for a full fpu emulation speed.

New Enhancer release for non AEON hardware
Just popping in
Just popping in

I wonder if we could expect a new enhancer release for non AEON hardware.
I'd like to see for next Christmas a special release for first generations on AmigaNG systems and new virtual QEMU boards (Gfx Virtio driver?).
I think there's some room to sell digital copies of this software for all OS4 users, adding some features missing in AmigaOS 4.1fe and let all OS4 user to be in pair each other as much as possible.
IMHO limiting fragmentation of a really small market is an important goal to reach.

Re: WebKit based browser initiative

At least in this aspect we are quite lucky and both Reaction and MUI are the best GUIs in the desktop computer space.
Both very light and super customizable make our systems recognizable to the masses, preserving the identity of the OS with unique peculiarities.
Windows has a truly horrible GUI and I challenge anyone to say otherwise.
Linux on the other hand is not known what GUI it has, apart from the shell it does not have a real identity that makes it recognisable.
The only system that has been able to update the GUI, while maintaining its identity at the same time, is MacOS.

If I have to use my Amiga to have non-native stuff, ported without any rearrangement from other operating systems, I already have my much better alternatives and I'm not interested.

If I have to use a browser or any other program on AmigaOS 4 it must be Reaction or alternatively MUI.

AmigaOS is Reaction
MorphOS is MUI

@Hans

Completely agree with you, so go on with Virtio drivers and let AmigaOS be developed in a virtual machine.
A virtual machine does not have hardware failures and year after year gain speed due new new processors released.
It also can use all host peripherals without need a for specific driver.
I suggest you to collaborate as much as possible with Zoltan Balaton.

For native hosts like Power 7/8/9/10 machines, and older Powermacs, could be interesting enable KVM facilities to let code run at full speed without filter of QEMU TCG translator.
Maybe for this task a specific Linux distro with kvm enabled could be a brilliant solution to propose to A-Eon and their Linux specialist guy Christian Zigotzky.

@joerg

NVRAM needs to be implemented in all Amiga virtual boards.
Two years ago I was looking for adding it on sam460 board.
My impression was it was really not an hard task, but anyway I give up.. QEMU is a beast and I'm definitively not a professional coder.

I have to try again on my pegasos 2, I have debian 8 jessie installed.
Problem is that I don't think I can compile quemu on that machine due old version of gcc and other missing dependencies

Re: Amiga38 Germany

Anyway another way to use real hardware could be to buy an old powerpc mac, install some distro of linux ppc on it and hope for a full compatibility with kvm-pr mode.
I tried some months ago on my powermac g5 quad with an old linux ubuntu ppc distro and an old version of qemu (between 3.x / 5.x if I remember well).
The Sam 460ex virtual board emulated in quemu was not compatible with this feature.
I have never understand if the limit was inside linux kernel, qemu kvm or both.
Anyway it's for sure a software limit and it's fixable with some work.
With kvm-pr you can get a full speed and use real hardware, having fun with linux ppc, amigaos 4 and mac os leopard at same time.

..Anyway if I was Trevor, as I already said some month ago, the best possible choice I could do was contact Zoltan Balaton and stipulate an agreement about the creation of an Amiga virtual machine under QEMU.
I intend a complete and full working virtual machine with Nvram, Bios and all chipset hardware registers.
Once you have a stable system on this type of machine you can try to migrate to a new cpu and come back to a real machine just like RPi5 o any X86/64 or anything else.

My 2 cents.

What is the cost of the single A1222 board? Not full system.

Re: Amiga38 Germany

The developing of Virtio gfx driver by AEON is really a great surprise.
Maybe Trevor was negative impressed by latest A1222 board development and now prefer concentrate on software developing for current hardware but also on virtual boards, like Pegasos 2, available for QEMU.

I hope there will be soon also other Virtio drivers for sound and networking.

Probably AEON will sell soon a special Enhancer version for QEMU with Virtio gfx drivers included and full 3d support.

I hope AEON will produce also a special Enhancer version for old generation AmigaNG systems like Pegasos 2.

About OS3.x development I think it's a subset of OS4 and in part it still relies on custom chips and m68k stuff.
Probably it will be never supported in QEMU due lack of chipset emulation. Anyway for OS3.x users, who loves old demo/games, icon packs and workbench themes, there's WinUAE and many others retro projects to continue to have fun.

Great news, Virtio drivers will let to develop AmigaOS on any hardware at decent speed for many years in future.
I hope after gfx drivers will be the turn of sound and network devices.

Closed source is main reason why amiga os environment has never growth.
Sadly even in these dark days major part of apps and 3rd parts of system components, like libs and devices, are still closed source.
Even firmwares of death mainboards are closed source and don’t let compatibility with modern hardware.
I.e. pegasos 2 buggy firmware who don’t like many usb keyboards and any Radeon rx cards.

Re: have you seen this?

Another reason is to have a native excellent game running on old systems without going to Radeon Rx or nova or other more recent hardware/drivers.
Amigaone and Pegasos systems are stuck with 3d drivers, games running on these machines are more limited vs X1000/5000 and Sam boards.

..anyone interested for an amiga os porting?
It should run quite smooth even on old systems, maybe also on 040/060 with rtg card.

@LiveForIt

Great work, to saturate memory transfers I imagine you used all pointers math and best use of registers.
If you intercept AltiVec presence you can also convert 4 pixels at same time.
Also for assembler you can use -S gcc switch and generate assembler, it’s a good point to start for developing a further optimised source.

Again, if you want to share entire sources your lib can be the base to implement display conversions for old and new programs in NG world.
At same time all can be optimised sharing sources with community,
I’d like to see in amiga developing community the same best practice to share sources of any project.
IMHO in this NON COMMERCIAL environment there’s a non sense releasing closed sources project.
NO ONE will make money developing amiga programs, it’s a dead platform and all au are using it just for fun.
