Re: Is there a fine line of working for free in Amiga world?
Just popping in
Just popping in

@Walkero

As as mostly quiet lurker I can say from observer standpoint nodding my head to what you posted. To a fact I am aware of all the conflicts and questionable behaviors you raise.

With regard to hardware; paying to be beta tester or early adopter is pretty normal. You are usually enticed in normal markets to participate to build products and have head start getting something to market early. But lets be honest the Amiga HW market is all hobby so I would not say anyone is getting a competitive advantage being a HW beta tester other than you get to play with new hardware. I would not fret that.

Software; Beta testers paying for privledge to being beta tester. It seems weird and previously industry wide you would get to be beta tester and pay discounted price or free upon release. But this is Amiga a low yield so I would rephrase and say you are paying to be early adopter. That would be what we see common place now with crowd funding of games or on Steam. Not that it eases the weird feeling for our generation but it is more normal these days than not. How much feedback you give is up to you you paid them to have early access. Test a release, maybe if I have time or care at the moment. That's my take.

Open source or not. I find I participate more with open source that is not GPL. I don't like idea of sharing my product source but am more than happy to share work on compilers or tools or widgets. For example: In the case of Enhancer. I would prefer all the reaction gadgets to be Opensource. 1. They would be better tested with more eyes. 2. You would have more developers willing to make more components since there would be reference components. AEON weird licensing wall for a About box, Toolbar, or etc. is sorry... stupid. They wont wind up in my stuff. I will write my own and share opensource. Now the products they build multiviewer, notedpad etc... sure pay for that that is a developer building something useful. I choose to purchase install or not.

Finally questionable practices of overwriting system components with ones of same name and co-opting the system. I have made public statements to my feeling that AEON Enhancer overwriting datatypes and common commands is more harmful to the ecosystem then beneficial. Its appears as a vain attempt to present themselves as more in control of the IP. Is it shady or ethical... well I think every individual has to judge on that. I think the original intention of Enhancer was good but somewhere it went off the rails. I am not sure who was making the product calls.

As for you feeling about time. The thing is right now I seriously doubt any party is making money(getting rich). I think there are those that are maybe a little exploitive that maybe they can make money someday. But I think that is misguided on their part. Then there are those that are doing what they feel can keep this little Toy OS alive for posterity(I'm ideologically aligned to this group)

Personally I play with AmigaOS as a hobby as such its my time. I am working on something that if I can get to work I will share with all. Sometimes I need to participate in Beta to get what I need to work. If that helps advance platform great. That's cool I'll do that, Ill point out issues if I find them. But thing is I own nobody anything when I work for free or payed to have access. I limit who I participate with. I am privately vocal to those that I think are misguided and move on if we agree to disagree.

When the Settlement in 2009 happened and the X1000 came out I was observer wanting to jump in. I bought one of the first X5000 publicly available. At that time there was much optimism in the public forums. Now... its a shit show(Legally and in Forums)

No one looks good. Not Hyperion, not Cloanto nor AEON.

To be clear there are a lot of really great people in the Amiga community that I can thank. This and os4coding.net are the only forum I will post on at all.

But if you are feeling exploited I am sorry for that as I appreciate all the you do and share freely and assistance you have freely given me. Me ill continue lurk and to just stay away and work on my hobby at my pace help those that help me and tune out the shit-show.

Re: Wayfarer Browser programmer interested in licencing to A-Eon for OS4.1

I am curious and mean no disrespect to the hard work the person or team that built UX for Wayfarer. But if it is built upon Webkit, and Odyssey is built on Webkit where is the repository for the opensource Webkit modifications.

So a full new browser might be wrong discussion with licensing and such; use of the updated Webkit for Odyssey might be more practical.

I am not fully familiar is Webkit GPL or BSD/MIT like in which case that answers the question why there is no public repo for Wayfarers Webkit modifications for Big-endian. I prefer BSD/MIT myself so fully understand.

As for waste on making browsing better I disagree it does not mean it cant be made a bit better. Use it for the fun that it is. I enjoy my Amiga X5000 immensely(complain when it flakes out) and respect its limits. I chug along with my projects, enjoy all the creative stuff interacting with an eclectic little community puts out fun software and marvels at big accomplishments like @geennaam HDA driver.

Just popping on to thanks for update. For any of those interested. I used this card CM8828 cm9882 Card as recommended by @geennaam and am blown away with how much better audio is. I am not sure how I can t test out the 7.1 with the Amiga as I am not sure AHI is aware but am looking forward to any continued improvements.

Re: X5000 not booting

@Thread

Thanks for inputs, she is booting and running again.

So...
@Derf - replaced battery no joy.

@Raziel - memory is lottery winner, I pulled the sticks and reseated one and it boots. Not sure if it is really memory or something else. For now just leaving one stick in as I don't want to look at it funny 😂

@All
The RTC does not work at all. After booting successfully tried some tests. Powered down power supply and board reboot date-time resets. Set the date with our friend Date and Setclock Save power down machine but don't power down supply the board time is saved in RTC life is good. If machine is unplugged no joy.

So the battery is just not running the clock. I will be honest I am not sure it ever has worked correctly, with my numerous posts about date/time issues. I can live with that as I use net time to sync on boot.

I do really appreciate this forum for all of you who chime in to always help with no toxicity that I see in other Amiga forums!

@derfs

I think you are on to something with the battery, as I had previous post about clock not working. I had done a test to find that with hard power offs the clock just resets so clearly that battery is dead. My understanding though is the battery should not be required to boot as time is just set as part of startup over the net.

But I will try replacing the battery on my way home pick up new one. I was excited for the quiet with the new fan. The is definitely finicky hardware. Seems lots of reports now after a few years in wild X5000 exhibit strange booting problems. Be nice if we can document all the weird causes.

Ill fill in thread if I get her up and running.

Well my X5000 seems to have given up the ghost. I have written before about strange gremlins. I turned it off the other day as the case fan was rattling so needed a change out.

Changed fan booted fine started messing with it and it locked up. Hmmm... rebooted locked up again. Rebooted nothing. Hard power down. Nothing..

Debug output is...

I am not sure it solved all the weirdness but for now it keeps time between reboots. I need to test cold boot(turn off power supply) see what that does.

X5000 RTC
Just popping in
Just popping in

My X5000 has never kept time well so I have relied on the RTC. Just this last week it entered a mode of strangeness I don't understand or can explain.

If I do a SETCLOCK LOAD it loads the date/time from the last time I saved the date with SETCLOCK SAVE. As I keep my machine running for days I find that weird as if the clock is no longer running on the board. If I coldboot IE. Disconnect power and load OS the clock reverts back to 12/1/2001 12am.

I would think battery but I changed it last month to known good battery, I changed a bunch of coins from same batch with other devices and was seemingly working.(I have to go buy more)

Does battery have to be good for clock to run even when powered on?

There is something weird with X5000 if you leave them unplugged for periods of time or turn off power supply.

Every time I seem to un-power(Plug or turn off supply) the board for a few days it requires multiple reboots before the machine would not lock up. Now seems fine takes a few days to crash :)

I am beginning to wonder if something is not right with RTC and the NVM that does not like being unplugged. I have seen multiple posts regarding strange booting issues.

Anybody got thoughts?

Thanks
Doug

Re: X5000 No Longer Booting OS4!
Just popping in
Just popping in

@AcillClassics

I can relate a bit. I had my machine in storage for about a year. When I pulled it out it would either lock hard during the loading of OS4 or crash after a few minutes. I think... it was related to the video card as I pulled it cleaned excess dust around fan and heat sink.(The area I had stored some dip-shit contractors had cut tile before asking me so lots of dust, my Mustang convertible top was down 200$ to clean).

After cleaning video card no issues. I wonder if you pulling cards in and out might have cleaned up some dust or improved fans. Reason I suspect video is not sure if MorphOS uses same underlying mechanism and maybe the power consumption of the AmigaOS drivers caused more heat and the video card to fault forcing your reboot cycle. Seems was source of my issue.

No Envy24 found! :-(
No FM801 found! :-(
No SB128 found! :-(
No SOLO_ONE found! :-(

I move the CS4281 driver to a backup folder and rebooted..

dev_open(unitNumber=0) [DH1/NGFileSystem 54.34 ]

Now it works fine. So now what is difference between these drivers?

Pretty straight forward defaults. I never really messed with it.

The fact workbench just locks up after a few minutes or right after boot is I think place for me to look.

I am starting to suspecting its the sound card. I have had multiple in this X5000. Currently its some version of some CMI8738 and I am aware some of them are not stable. I have played Tower 57 no problem and I have written audio code under OS 4.1 though and that seems to run fine. But, cant say same for the UAE code.

I am going to disable it and see if that helps, then make a clean install. Now I am on mission. Might have to find another audio card too.

@Raziel

Well interestingly enough the latest WHDLoad just crashes hard with a DSI. So I upgraded E-UAE to the 1.0 of os4depot. Still crashes. So I figure let me just boot into 3.1 and mess around. It too locks up. Now interesting with the 3.1 I can "Amiga-M" to switch back to OS4.1. Logs don't indicate anything. I have serial debugger attached as well don't see anything.

There is something on my configure that it doesn't like the question now to track down what it is.

My thought now is to make a clean boot partition as I have plenty of unused space and start adding things. That is going to take some time to set up as its been a while and I really would hate to mess up.

If I remember correctly I can just boot from the Final Edition Install CD. Download the update and install the graphics drivers from the Enhancer.

Need to balance goofing around with various projects.

Hi,

I only tried the Cinemaware titles that came as part of Final CD.

I could have sworn they worked at one time. I only recently pulled the X5000 out of storage and went to show one of my favorites to daughter.

I tried to update the various bits like E-UAE and WHLOAD but that made it worse they just crashed.

Ill try and grab a simple ADF title and see if I can just run that.

Part that is weird is they all behave same way. The intro's play then just empty screen. I can exit E-UAE and shut it all down.

I'm stumped.
