Re: NetSurf development builds (now with added Javascript)
Just popping in
Just popping in

I'm getting a very weird behaviour on this and recent builds (ever since the treeview change). When I go to underrail.com and add it to the unsorted hotlist, upon draging and dropping I get this:

"assertion "!relation->flags & TV_NFLAGS_SELECTED)" failed: file "desktop/treeview.c", line 2548
***Command 'NetSurf' returned with unfreed signals 0FF00000!"

This doesn't happen on any other website on my unsorted hotlist... weird.

Other than that https sites do seem a little bit faster although it's hard to say because recent versions have functioned better.

I've been trying to really test it but the last couple of weeks you've added stuff which forced me to cancel my reviews a couple of times... due to good reasons

Anyway, one part is still relevent and that the affect Candi has on Netsurf. It is minimal at best and regularly almost nothing at all. Whenever it has an impact it does so in the same way that anything graphical (like moving windows for example) can cause something while a timeout occurs. That said, It has been a couple of weeks since I experienced any timeout in the sense that it previouslly could bring the entire system to its knees.

Funny thing - I grabbed this screen with screengrab of snoopy recording JuffED: https://s30.postimg.org/p1kke63v5/screen1ab.jpg
Then, went to upload it and didn't reboot before that. Suddenly after about 3-4 minutes JuffeED appeared so I also grabbed the result: https://s28.postimg.org/fqdpvxezx/screen1ba.jpg

Now it appears like it always did and also seems to work better after a couple of minutes fiddling with it. I will now test the other qt apps/games to see if they also appear after several minutes.

Really? I can't get juffed to start - not the new version or the old one. However smtube and and screengrab work better and without the widget error. Other utils/games are also split - some work better while others can't start.

I don't know about others, for me ever since the move to FE + latest driver + latest Candi I didn't have a single issue. I've been using it alongside some pretty heavy loads: mplayer, uae, scummvm opengl fullscreen, odyssey etc. It might be unwise from a performance perspective while we each have our own priorities and that is why I talk about a heavy load condition (which I don't get regularly only on specific occasions like I said here). In addition, I did have issues with it and the new Notification Server since installing the enhancer package. Had to delete it + settings a couple of times before it finally worked okay. I think that was more regarding start/stop commands and what triggers notifications.

It doesn't matter, like with js I will test NS without Candi (or anything else) for a week or so and report back.

Regrading WebGL, it didn't help FF on linux being any less slow on the X1k. It's important not to mess too much with what basic design NS has that makes it go fast or what makes oddysey keep up with mainstream sites despite it being outdated.

Okay I might have an update on the total crash that happened on drag and drop: I was just now marking an entire paragraph in oddysey and I guess I tried to dnd it without noticing as the entire system froze up and that had also happened twice in the last couple of days. Candi in the background might be related. To my defence though, I never experienced this with odyssey before and it also has a known dsi that might trigger all sorts of things.

After about a week of using 3.6 without js I can report it doesn't have a serious effect as it affects it indirectly via the "heavy load" condition. That condition can be reproduced when using NS with Candi and TuneNet in the background - when it's stuck it can really get stuck for minutes. When a timeout happens on a certain situation it can even freeze everything. Of course using it alongside Odyssey is a big no as every little freeze can freeze everything. That's why I say it doesn't play well with others when every load becomes big for NS.

_____

About the "assert" system crash in the last couple of days this had happened twice so I reported it here as 2 separate occasions: http://bugs.netsurf-browser.org/mantis/view.php?id=2492

@ChrisH

Well I always thought that if you liked a certain prog you want to use it more and more. Javascript allows that while the cost must still be pretty big at this stage of development. Anyway, turning it off affects the symptoms.

Ok, I will be even more attentive although I already am. As I can't get that log because of the hard crush, I will post a pic next time. I can't tell you it happens if I do anything in particular because I use netsurf for specific bookmarks and oddysey for the rest.

I turned off javascript and it seems to help. What does that mean? That the load times or freeze times or slowdowns are less common and when they occur I can recover more quickly, yet they still happen. As a matter of fact I got a timeout/freeze right now when I tried to post this comment - as it is rush hour here and usually that means some slowdowns in net traffic when accessing sites overseas.

@ChrisH

I always do a clean install. Running on a X1000 with R9-270 on FE.

The quite simple amiga pages cause this issue (here, amigaworld, amiga.com, hyperion) so of course heavier websites have that also. It is important to add that it is not something I can cause very clearly by doing X as it leads to Y. The websites I mentioned cause slowdowns from time to time and sometimes heavier websites cause less slowdowns and sometimes non at all.

The timeout issue is not website-related. Whenever I do stuff in the evening when the net traffic is most intense here, timeouts occur more frequently on certain websites and freeze things up for the period I mentioned. After such a freeze another isn't likely right away.

Congratulations on the recent update, I am still experiencing the same freezes I had been experiencing for the last 2 years. Timeouts still bring the computer to a halt between 15-35 seconds. Some sites that realy don't have a lot of graphics can create major slowdowns that make it I can't even run Candi in the background. and sometimes when I close a tab I can get a freeze I can't recover from. That last bug is less common than timeout freezes and the slowdowns on certain sites. I don't think this is related to java but I will try to use it from now on without it and see if it helps (the timeout freezes are definitely not related). Lastly, once in a while it can crush the system after exiting with it giving me that known output in the shell window (assort something something).

* On Amigaworld I can't close the browser and then reopen and continue to be logged-on.

@Dandy

An answer to the original posting:

I'm sorry to hear about your health and inability to get that new Amiga you want. I will try to answer from a mere user perspective, although based on 30 years as one.

I wasn't here all those years of Amiga upgrades. For me it always was about the bigger Amiga machines from the 1000, to the 2000 and then 4000. Those machine have cost quite a lot but at that time the culture of consuming was very different. The best thing about it growing up on Amiga was the patience I learned about the entire home computer market so even after leaving I never went for those overrated high end PCs and never regretted it. Purchasing Amiga has always been a 5 year thing for me that later translated to other areas. 14 years ago I bought a Yamaha Receiver and surprise surprise - it still sounds great and supports everything I need and will probably continue to do so.

That maybe isn't a valid business model in the home computer world but what is a business model without a market? We as users and consumers have our own considerations. We can divest funds for what we deem as long term purchasing. the X1k cost me a lot not just the machine but also shipping to the middle east. I still carry that cost 2 years after purchasing. That was a choice based on a lot of stuff Amigans don't really need to explain (or just proclaim being crazy) and based on an order of priorities concerning every spending that isn't essential. So of course I would never think you should buy something like this over taking care of yourself. This can only be a priority as far as spending on anything that isn't essential because concerning any free time or simply having fun - there wasn't really a question.

I wish you good health and stay with us for many years to come.

@alfkil

No need to apologize. Thank you for your work not only in listening to the users and being open about their way of doing stuff and their daily uses but also trying to accomplish a working stage considering different set-ups.

As for me if I'm able to add a percent to your 99 then I'm happy about it. Juffed became disfunctional after ticking/unticking the Qt options. Deleting + opening a new drawer fixed it and now it is working again so maybe that's another hint as far as the effect of changing Qt setting or maybe the Qt prefs app in itself or whatever - as long as it works.

This might be because of added attributes on that version format command, right? because eventually you format it properly on the Linux side. Could a previous version format command, work with current libraries? I've been experiencing a one-way Ext3 partition after that e2fs version came out - can only copy to it on the Linux side.

No the one which Netsurf minimizes itself to on the docky as well as on the desktop.

Right now Netsurf isn't summonned up from the dock when you click on its docky. You can only open a new window. Dev CI #3750.

Re: Qt beta

@alfkil

Suddenly and with intent (or knowledge or any of that stuff...) I now have a theory!

I have mounted an Ext3 partition using a 3rd party driver. Juffed when clicked on the mounted partition opens instead (at last...) the mount command saved to a text file opened by mount which is loaded at start-up. The other drives it opens as empty text files/tabs - the same as if I pointed it to a specific text file (without using the built-in broswer).

Another behaviour is when I try to go back from the /qt/home it says "QFileSystemWatcher::addPath: path is empty".

I'm adding 2 pics.

https://s22.postimg.org/6vvwg811t/screen12.png

Edit:

But what will happen globally if I delete the font configuration file? Could the utility Eastern have something to do with it as it fails to convert the fonts to images and crashes (turned it off without effect on the issues).
