@cygnusEd
Yes, thank you. Thematic's hint led me there, and I have been able to revive my old news groups. Well, "revive" may be the wrong word; Usenet has been pretty moribund for the last 15 or 20 years.

@Severin
I had tried that already, and it didn't work. But maybe that was because I didn't do a cold reboot afterwards? It works now, thank you.

Another reason I didn't think the http:// stuff was necessary: I don't have it for Home Page, but clicking the house brings up my web site.

Okay, next project is to get DOpus5 back.

Sylpheed, but if you hadn't given the name as an option, my current state of dementia wouldn't have come up with the name.

I'll see what I can find out about Amicygnix and Sylpheed.

Preferences > Start Page
Just popping in
Just popping in

I'm gradually putting together a replacement of a totally wiped out OS4 HD (password list, email addresses, etc., less than two-and-a-half years old all gone!).

I've got Odyssey working more or less as it should again (but at 1024x768 instead of 1920x1080. Yuck!). But I have not been able to reestablish the opening page by filling in Preferences > Start Page with www.staradvertiser.com. I keep getting "about:blank" when I boot up. The Home Page entry works fine; of course for that I need to click the house, but I never had to click anything in the past to get logged on to my newspaper when I booted Odyssey.

I have no doubt forgotten something important (my new way of life), but what?

Getting AmiCygnix back correctly
Just popping in
Just popping in

I've been using AmiCygnix for some years, mainly for Usenet, but I recently trashed my OS4 hard drive with no recent backups, and I'm slowly putting OS4.1FE and the old user partitions back together on my X1000.

I just reinstalled AmiCygnix, Base and Tools, but when I boot it I find no e-mail program at all! What am I doing wrong this time?

It may be a moot point. I haven't been able to reconnect YAM with my ISP, so I'll probably have the same trouble with AmiCygnix (in fact I have found that the browser does not connect), but just in case I overcome that major difficulty...

@Chris

Maybe I don't understand "OS4 native frontend"?

It works fine (fine as anything works in Odyssey, anyway), for Japanese and Korean, at least, on my X1000 with OS4.1FE.

(A few seconds later) Now I see: you meant it doesn't work in OS4 native frontend NetSurf.

Perhaps related to walkero's query, I can't make http://gate2home.com/Japanese-Keyboard/ actually work in the version of NetSurf that came with my AmiCynix. It claims to be a Japanese keyboard, but allows me to type only latin characters.

Can I assume there is an easy fix for this?

One of my most important files in FinalCalc now fails to open, with a red-zone damaging DSI error.

I will wager $100 that there is no way to fix this, and I hope I lose.

@logicalheart

One should credit WordPerfect for being better on AOS2 than on MS-DOS; e.g., "WordPerfect 4.1 for the Amiga was the first word processor to allow indefinite windowed documents to be open."

One can still type in it on OS4FE, but it's pointless to do so. Nothing else -- like Save, Retrieve, Print -- works.

@smf
I used that when I set it up to replace 4.1u6. I'm not ready to do it again, yet, anyway. I like having both running (mostly) separately at the same time.

@ddni
I always had the idea that all one could do was remove parentheses; I assumed adding would be impossible -- it wouldn't be detected.

But by golly, DONOTWAIT works! Thank you.

I didn't start using Amigas until 1986, and it looks like I'm a slow learner.

How to boot DOpus automatically
Just popping in
Just popping in

With OS4.1u6 I had set up DOpus5 in WB replacement mode some time ago.

When I upgraded to FE I decided to use Workbench, at least until I had a chance to fully appreciate it. But I discovered that if I put the DirectoryOpus icon on Workbench, I could click on it and get DOpus as an alternate screen, and the hot keys I had set up would work on Workbench as well. Hot dog!

So, until yesterday, I have been launching OS4.1FE and immediately clicking the DirectoryOpus icon. Then I thought maybe I could save myself a step by moving the icon into Prefs WBStartup. Bit it turns out that isn't the right thing to do, exactly. I now get alerts that DOpus is waiting to return, or DOpus is getting "tired of waiting" to return.

Of course, clicking the "Cancel" on those alerts is no easier than clicking the DirectoryOpus icon was, but isn't there after all some way to automate the procedure?

Re: FE and Broken Cluster Geometry
Just popping in

@Epsilon
Googling "broken Cluster Geometry" brought me to this thread. I am having a similar problem since reinstalling Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and reformatting my CF card from FAT32 to FAT16. I reread the Ubuntu install instructions, which say FAT32 won't work. I had been using it with no known problem for over a year, but thought I should fix it on principle.

My situation is slightly different from the OP's. I get a brief message, gone too fast to read beyond "Can't find" and then the Disk_Warning, followed usually by an "AmiDock: Problem" -- CPUInfo needs hi- or true color screen. And finally a System Request -- "Intuition is trying to reset the Workbench screen ..." Meanwhile, a (usable, but!) PAL:640X480 Low Res Workbench screen has opened instead of my usual 1920x1080 ARGB32.

I click "OK" on the alert or two that has that button, then "Retry" on the System Request and my normal screen reappears, except three top-of-screen dockies and Limpid Clock are out of place. In fact, one of them, CPUInfo, has been reduced to an empty nameless shell.

Easy enough(?) to fix, temporarily.

The reason I chose your post to reply to is your comment about the CF card not appearing in OS4.1u6. Mine always did, labeled KINGSTON. In fact, I believe I installed new kernels to it from Workbench. Since redoing the card, even in FE Workbench, it only comes up as CFIDEO:Uninitialized. (I don't find it at all in my DOpus5 screen.)

Anyway, this thread has brought me hope.

@TearsOfMe

Well, well, well!

You know, I spend a lot of time reading the two user's manuals (...55 and ...582), but there's just more than I'm ever going to be able to learn. Thank you for the good lesson.

@Chris
Interesting! Turning off "like WB" is what seems to have fixed mine!

Could it be because yours is OS4 native? 5.0.5.8 Pro is 68K.

Oh! And I had forgotten this is a Classic Amiga list. I use an X1000.

OS4.1FE Workbench vs. DOpus5
Just popping in
Just popping in

With OS4.1u6 I replaced WB with DOpus5. Now that I have FE, instead of replacing Workbench, I leave the Directory Opus icon out and normally click it as soon as FE boots. Then I seem to have the best of both worlds. DOpus hot keys work in either screen; otherwise I choose screens according to what I want to do.

I don't remember noticing this with Dopus being the main screen when I used u6: The DOpus5 screen is cluttered with icons for partitions that I don't want to see there, such as "dh41," my OS4.1u6 backup and "KINGSTON," where I keep Ubuntu.

Is there a way to hide those?

@walkero
You said, "I tried both 5 and 4 PPC versions and they both freeze the system as soon as the first windows open (tools and properties)."

That sounds exactly like the problem I was having until this morning. What I had to do was unselect "Like Workbench" in MUI > Screen [PageStream, Board 0:1920x1080 ARGB32] > Edit. I also turned on Autoscroll and Compositing, but I don't think those mattered.

Re: guard area hit

@tonyw

Not ignoring DSI sounds like good advice, and in most instances I shall follow it from now on.

But opening a file in PageStream Pro 5.0.5.8 gets a DSI almost every time. I'm afraid I'd have to quit using that much-needed program!

Meanwhile, following broadblues suggestion, I have increased its stack from 100000 to 1000000. Will try it shortly, with trepidation; isn't that a pretty big stack?

I'm guessing that when I get a DSI error that tells me the red zone is OK but "guard area hit," I probably shouldn't click "Ignore DSI errors."

What is that guard area, anyway? What "hits" it?

Thanks. That's the kind of advice I was hoping to get. I suppose it's in the FE install directions, which I always read anyway, but nice to know in advance.
