Re: Company<->User communication...Is it still a thing today?

@kas1e

I contacted some known amiga developers in the past (most former OS4 developers)

From what I read when software devs (application developers) drop OS4 they do not switch platform but completely drop the whole platform (often not only frustrated by Hyperion or slow OS development but also by the unfriendly community and the Red versus Blue wars.

In case of OS developers, additionally there are those damned NDAs signed by the developers with Hyperion making it impossible (or at least risky) to contribute to anything else. So they leave too then

@kas1e

Hyperion is Ben H.

No clue what he really wants with OS4

@kas1e

Yes of course. Bug fixes (expecially if already there) should be delivered. Expecially if a date for a official big update is unknown.

@samo79

I am not involved (perhaps kas1e can say more) but my impression is OS3 development is more or less independent driven by the 2 motivated devs. Thomas Richter is the head and he is not forced to ask about everything (except propably if using OS4 sources). Base was 3.1 sources and in some cases OS4 sources added.

At OS4 the situation seems to be more complicated and if you get no money and additionally have problems to get permissions or needed responses you become frustrated and lose your motivation. That at least would explain the obvious difference.

then I was wrong there

Thomas Richter definetely said not being involved or interested in OS4

@walkero

how should software development be affected by covid?

You are organized by electronic media and internet because the devs are not at one place

Lack of OS development (or Enhancer) cannot excuse with covid. Covid affected supply of electronic parts at beginning of year but I do not think that this is still the case.

@samo79

I am of course not the spokesman of Thomas R. but I have read something about it.

Basically behind 3.1.4 and 3.2 are two developers (Thomas Richter and Olaf Barthel) and both neither involved nor interested in AOS4. So development of OS4 was not affected by it. Additionally all involved work for free and Hyperion can make money with it. Weired business... unfortunately the money will propably go to Ben H. and lawsuits finally and not in OS4 (or OS3.2)

@orgin

To summarize it:

The sources of Wayfarer are not free

They are tightly connected to MorphOS-Changes (and would require changes at OS4 kernel too)

The Compiler would need improvements to get it happen (in theory)

and even then you would need a skilled developer to do it

In short: no chance ;)

@LiveForIt

of course you could. But people would not buy it for a small bugfix. For that it would have to have something new offered that would have made it worth to buy even for people already using the old version.

That did not happen. Instead the efforts were invested to get it running on 4.X but that is not interesting for majority of users. The needed sales were never published (and the real numbers) but if you look that the activity there completely stopped it is obvious that the sales were too low (not a real surprise to me). And that people bought expensive hardware just to run PPaint PPC is not very propably. In my view the complete wrong ideas.

There is the retro community including emulation and the new vampire series with thousands of users and there is the NG community (expecially 4.X and MorphOS).

Improve and sell the amiga software to the retro community and make it in a way that the programs also runs on NG machines and not change the GUI. Concentrate the efforts on bugfixes and new features. That keeps cost low and gives a chance to get the money back.

If you want to really make NG interesting make new up to date software and port open source from Linux world. Of course that is expensive and risky because you invest in a still very very small market in the hope to grow it.

Doing the first improving amiga software for the retro market is in my view the better way but of course it not "sells" new PPC hardware (what in my view will not happen anyway).

@smf

it was not a "mistake" but no success either

The main effort certainly was needed to get it running native on PPC and not many improvements (new features). It would have been better in my view to use the existing software and concentrate on bugfixes and new features.

Then it would have been interesting for much more people and a bigger chance to get the investment back.

But there was the idea to sell PPC hardware with native (PPC) former 68k amiga software and that was and is not realistic. Additionally by the obvious fixation on 4.X making Reaction GUIs it is nearly impossible to get it running elsewhere. But again... obviously behind it is the idea to sell more hardware with the software and I do not think that this can work. Not without really huge improvements on the software to make it useable in todays terms but that needs lots of work and is propably easier done from scratch. Additionally there is the problem of the lack of money and developer resources.

@LiveForIt

nobody claimed that open source is solution to everything, there are amiga programs open source and nothing happens but at least there is a chance. Closed software with owner not able or interested to develop are really dead.

the sources should be opened from start

but all (except Alinea perhaps) have paid considerable amounts of money for the sources so I fear they will sit on it forever

@trixie

the whole strategy to buy old sources and recompile them to sell the PPC hardware is a big mistake anyway, expecially if they seriously expect to get new PPC users by that.

If you really want to attract new users develop new software that is written from scratch. To update the old software just to get it running natively on 4.X is not attracting many new users and without considerably new features there is no reason in the 68k community to buy it. I only say PPaint. It is never selling enough to make it profitable. Buying sources is relative cheap but only first step.

Better to develop new versions of the old software making bugfixes and add new features and not convert it to reaction keeping the existing GUI and 68k. That might be profitable. Or you create new software from scratch for 4.X that is interesting in todays terms. But that needs high investments and is very risky. Current strategy is in the middle and has no chance to succeed. It is obvious if you look what happened to the software that was bought by amikit/aeon. They are killed by that.

@Daytona675x

Normally I do not comment this topic because I never give money for non-existing products so fortunately did not waste money in this case.

Just a short comment... sometimes it looks like you are in the contest who is most unpolite poster on a forum, I can assure you you can only loose there finally ;) people remember so it is better not to have discussions like this, at least as long you are still interested to sell something to anyone here.

Regarding Wings it is finally unfortunate for everyone but as far as I remember you were the "face" of Wings for amiga so people thought they would get something in a certain amount of time (at least before they die ;) ). That you both underestimated the amount of work and made some strange agreements with cinemaware that led to not being paid by them is bad but not caused by people backing the project. At this point of time you are in a loose-loose situation. You can say I did not get money so I do not owe anyone any effort but then you have a lot of angry people. For people at the time backing it you were a kind of guarantee for its success so the failure of it (and I certainly do not expect it to be ever completed) is your failure too. Bashing people is not really helpful there in my view

@Dandy

there is discussion relating to a standalone version that has a faster FPGA and at least 1 GB RAM, it even seems that it becomes available relative soon (this year or early next year). We will see what happens. So if you can wait (and as I understood your money supply is limited anyway) I would at least wait for it and then you can decide what you want and can afford.

digging I found this:
