Re: Old AmigaOS 4 versions and new software

I think in our little community it is reasonable to develop for and state that an application will run on a base of AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2. I don’t see the point of running an older version of the OS on this particular platform.

Excellent. The new version is working fine on my X1000.

Thanks, guys. I had a great time on this trip. It was so very pleasant to see old friends again and to make new ones, and to meet in person for the first time friends from online. Am feeling good Amiga vibes again thanks to my amigos.

Here are my photos from the 2022 AmiWest:

And my photos from some past Amiga shows...

Had a great time at the show this year. Unfortunately, I am unable to afford to attend every time, but hopefully I will return at some point. :)

I am not certain if Google Photos is very friendly to Amiga browsers. Unfortunately, I have lost my previous web domain where I hosted pictures. Am open to suggestions for some place where I can host these images for free that might be more accessible with Odyssey, iBrowse, etc.

Re: RadeonHD V.5 driver

Not too shy to talk

I had just enough time before leaving the house today to install the new RadeonHD 5 driver and also Enhancer 2.2 (well, parts of it) on one of my X1000s. I had not ever upgraded Enhancer to the 2.x level but seems video acceleration is desirable.

From what I'm reading in this thread I should not be expecting much of anything in the way of improved video playback just yet, which would be my main desire. I have Emotion and MPlayer but not yet the new version of DVPlayer. I will try the various tweaks you guys have suggested in player settings but will surely achieve the same results. Over the years I have been able to play 720p videos with some reliability but 1080p or better has been a bridge too far.

Probably I should have bought an X5000 instead of a second X1000 motherboard back in 2015, but I was thinking of it as a backup bit of hardware for a machine I loved. Heh. Anyway, still mucking about on the X1000 trying to have some fun and make the most of it.

I have two X1000s with R9 270 graphics cards and for years have desired the ability to play 1080p videos smoothly. Are we ever going to get there on this machine? This ability is something I would pay for. Are we there yet?

@rjd324

X5000 has a little faster clock speed and faster memory. X5000 also has fewer ports and slots.

X1000 has a little slower clock speed and slower memory, but it has Altivec. X1000 also has more ports and slots.

Advantages and disadvantages for each. I have two X1000s but probably better to have one of each.

I have two X1000s and no beta software, so I don't have many options. Might buy an OS release with NGFS one day, if there are anymore of those. Heh.

Hmmm. I am sure I am using an SSD with SFS partitions in one of my X1000s. Am I asking for trouble?

Not sure about my HD sectors. The hard drives are in the 1TB to 2TB range. The SSD is 512GB.

Happy to test anything as well. I have two X1000s each with R9 270 cards. Have not yet purchased the newer DVPlayer and Enhancer versions, however. EDIT: I have purchased Emotion.

I had feelings about this when it was announced at Amiwest, so kept my purse close and closed. Awaiting the final word on capability and cost and requirements -- and reviews from other users.

I have held off buying the newest DVPlayer or the more recent Enhancer release(s) until all the pieces are out and the prices and capabilities of the software are clear. What I'm hoping to achieve is 1080p or better full speed video playback on an X1000, and preferably using the more than capable Southern Islands cards I already own. It sounds like, from what I'm reading, that progress has or is being made in this direction. Once it's clear what's being sold and for how much and that it's going to work as advertised, I'll be ready to buy into it. Of course, the price will have to fit my budget.

Watching with interest.

At least i as a beta tester can say, that Emotion/DvPlayer works correctly and plays videos fine with GPU support via va.library on the latest RadeonHD driver and all the related stuff.

Roman, thanks for sharing this. This information and what Matthew has said has got my attention as an owner of two X1000s and multiple RadeonHD cards.

@walkero

Been a busy few days here, but I just got around to updating MV. Must say, the new arrangement with the podcast episode titles in the larger middle section is a nice improvement. That works out especially for me since I use a larger system font by default because of old-eye vision. :)

@levellord

Be sure your system clock is close to correct and then I bet your podcasts will play. Same thing happened with me.

I’ve also found Aamp does not play many podcasts I like, but ffplay and Emotion have played them all.

Try the clock thing first.

I am excited about the prospect of having 1080p or better video playback on my X1000 computers that both have Southern Islands cards. I assume I will need a combination of this player and also the forthcoming new RadeonHD driver? If so, I will be watching for development and release news on the new video driver and will pounce once it is available to purchase.

@ktadd

George's program is brilliant and getting more useful almost daily with all the updates. Meantime, your wonderful and well conceived script brings very useful functionality. Being able to select among players on an as-needed basis is handy, and it is very smart how it defaults to one of them in a few seconds if no action is selected. I did edit the script to increase this delay from 3 seconds to 10 seconds because I am sometimes too slow to move the mouse and find my button in time. Heh.

Although I love AmigaAmp for music playback there are too many podcasts that don't work with it. Although I love Emotion for videos, using it for audio only playback does not give the visual stimulus I somehow crave. Using ffplay for podcasts has been bulletproof so far, and I like the waveforms dancing around in the window. :)

Also, love that you made it possible to save a stream as an mp3 file. That's going to be quite handy at times.

Good work, G and K. It is appreciated. These kinds of projects make AmigaOS and its associated weird and exotic (heh) hardware useful. I'm finding excuses to turn on these machines more regularly now, after letting them sit dormant for a very long time. Thank you!

Walkero, I downloaded 1.3.0 and have put it to use today playiing streams such as BBC and jazz stations. Works fine here on my X1000 and AmigaAmp.

Looking forward to podcast support. Your work is appreciated.
