Re: AmiGen ready for alpha testing

@Valiant

Hey, it's good to see someone is working on genealogy software for Amiga. That's one project I was considering for myself, right after the wholly unrealistic porting of TortoiseSVN.

I used Scion Genealogist 5 for a while, when I was really into genealogy. It can import/export GEDCOM via Scion2GEDCOM.rexx and GEDCOM2Scion.rexx, but I never actually tried to import the files into other software to verify that it actually worked.

I don't think I can afford the time to help test your software at the moment, but good luck with the project!

@Thread

I got mine on Tuesday, March 16th. Not bad for Wales to Canada, I think.

@ChrisH

I saw the big article on "E", but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Too busy today. All I've read so far are the Trevor Dickson interview, Amiga Future News, and Newsflash pages so far. It's coming with me on my bus ride to work tomorrow!

I did notice the pics of Neverball in the games review section, though. That looks great!

@Mrodfr

Darnit! I just tripped over this again by accident!

I had a large directory of stuff on my 16GB DataTraveller USB stick. I copied it to my Sam's HD. I didn't like the name, so I renamed... the wrong one! I accidentally renamed the one on the USB stick.

The result: The direcory disappeared! But the space on the stick was not freed. So it was not deleted, just the directory entry was lost.

Good thing I had a copy.

I copied the rest of what I wanted saved to my Sam, and then reformatted the stick on a WinXP box.

I wish this stick had a write-protect tab that I could set before plugging it into my Sam!

BTW, I have been using a FAT formatted 16MB (yes, megabyte) CompactFlash card to xfer files back to the Windows box, and that has worked so far. Maybe this really is some issue with media size.

I only just ordered mine from AmigaKit this morning.

It's been a long time since I saw a print Amiga mag. I'm looking forward to it! I don't even care if all the X1000 info is leaked before the magazine gets here.

Re: USB devices that work with OS4.1 Update 1

I have plugged in a couple of other USB devices recently:

1. Duracell 8GB USB Memory Drive
(I use this for backups and it works very well. Formatted SFS\0.)

2. LaCie external 80GB 3.5" HD
(This is FAT32 format and I can _read_ from it. I am not brave enough to try writing.)

I still have some other things I haven't tried.

Has anyone tried a USB-to-RS232 adapter? I am still on dialup and I'd like to have a working serial port.

What mean your before AOS4.1, FAT95 failed allways ??? I don't understand really the before and after AOS4.1U1 explanation.

FAT32 USB volumes used to get read errors for me, with the OS4.1 beta (SAM). It was dangerous to copy files _from_ a USB stick. Now with OS4.1u1 I have successfully copied many, and large, files from USB media, with no errors.

With either version of the OS, it seems dangerous to copy files _to_ a FAT32 USB device.

Note that the small file I copied last night was named simply "files.md5", so no special characters or long filenames were involved.

Quote:

What look like the write error requester ???

Um, a normal system requester, I guess. I didn't pay that much attention to what it looked like, and I couldn't get a grab of it because Workbench was locked-up.

It said there was a write error on some block with a big number that I didn't write down.

Quote:

You copied things with a filemanager (dopus4) ???

Nope. I dragged the file to the volume using Workbench.

Quote:

The USB reset during the copy (USB mouse and keyboard) ???

I don't know if USB reset during the copy. I have a SAM440EP so I have to use USB mouse and keyboard. The mouse was still working after the error. Workbench was locked-up and I didn't have anything I could type into, so I don't know if the keyboard was still working.

Also, I don't have any USB hubs connected, or anything like that. Apart from the mouse and keyboard, the USB stick was the only USB device connected to the SAM.

I use this same USB stick with Windows all the time, and occasionally with Linux, and I haven't experienced a problem with it on those operating systems.

Hyep, I just had a problem copying to my 16GB DataTraveller USB stick.

Before OS4.1 Update 1 I couldn't even copy data from FAT formatted USB sticks. Since 4.1u1 I have copied lots of large files from FAT USB sticks and an external HD without problems.

Tonight was probably the first time I risked writing a file to a FAT filesystem on USB, though. Just a small text file.

This was the contents of the original:

I got the "write error" requestor and I tried to RETRY a few times. I had to reboot because Workbench was frozen. I could move windows but I couldn't close any, and only the backdrops would redraw, not the contents.

The file above is what was on the USB stick after I rebooted.

The filename was OK. I haven't checked to see if the md5sums on the rest of the files on the stick are still OK.

I use an SFS-formatted USB stick for backing up Workbench and Work partitions and I haven't had a problem yet. That worked before 4.1u1, too.

Re: A1000 General Discussion

My first Amiga was also an A1000. I loved that machine! I don't think of it as a rare machine at all, though. I knew several people who had them, through the local BBSing scene. One of them had purchased his in 1985 (September?) and had pre-1.0 Kickstart/Workbench disks! Mine came with 1.1. I never actually saw the pre-1.0 disks, they maybe weren't official disks with stickers &c.

Yeah, Amiga Tutor was a cool program! The graphics seemed awesome to me at the time. I loved the dancing mouse. Kaleidoscope was great, too. I used to leave my A1K running Kaleidoscope for hours while I did homework. That was a while before the demo scene.

All of the disks that came with my A1K now have icky-looking labels, which is too bad.

Back then, I actually liked AmigaBASIC and I wrote quite a few programs using it. I remember that it took me a few days to get used to using a GUI and a mouse, though. I didn't know when a program had been quit or when it was just hidden sometimes. I remember loading several copies of AmigaBASIC without knowing it... everything just got slower and slower because AmigaBASIC is a CPU hog, and I was thinking that I had brought home a buggy piece of #%#%! Haha!

Anyway, the A1000 is still my favourite Amiga. Probably just for nostalgic reasons, but it was beautiful, too! And quiet! Until I got that golram Seagate HD! BVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV..... AAAAAAAAARGH!

@Raziel

My SGrab drawer is a portal to alternate realities. It does not contain the same drawers and files as it did last night. Now the one on the CD is empty, but the one on my Workbench partition contains a "Sys" drawer containing "amigaguide.guide" and "Workbench.guide" in what looks like Polish. There is no sign of the usb-related files from the other night.

I fear something must be wrong with my filesystem.

However, I have checked the CD against the .iso and AmiDVD says it's the same. I have tested the .lha file from the command line and there are no errors. I haven't tested that the .iso is the same as the one in the .lha file yet, and I haven't compared with the .lha file on the USB stick I transported the update file on. USB was very buggy before Update 1 and I depended on it to get the update to my Sam. I will have to look into this further.

I consider it a commodity no matter where it is stored, if it keeps running with no GUI and can have the GUI restored with a keypress or from Exchange.

Thanks for the version info. It's the same one as came with the previous version of the OS, so I have copied it.

Yes, SGrab is a commodity and so it's still lurking around in memory somewhere, and I agree that it would be good if the interface of the already loaded program would appear when trying to start it again.

But this conversation made me realize something: My OS4.1 Update 1 CD doesn't have SGrab on it! I didn't verify the disk before installing. I wonder what else is missing or corrupted.

<grumble grumble grumble>

Edit: I have just verified the CD against Sam440InstallCD-Upd1.iso which I still have on my hard drive, and it checks out OK with AmiDVD. But there is no SGrab on the CD. The drawer is there, in Utilities, and it has some stuff inside that looks like it is related to USB. Does anyone else see this or am I the only one?

@328gts

OK, I haven't tested any of these devices extensively with AmigaOS4.1 Update 1, but they do all get recognized and I am able to access files on them. None of them worked at all before Update 1:

Canon EOS Rebel XS camera (DSLR)
Jazz HDV189 video camera
Dynex All-in-1 External Card Reader
Sylvania SMP2012 2GB MP3 player

A "Picture Transfer Protocol" window opens with thumbnails of all the pics on the Canon when it is plugged in, which I find really cool.

I have used the Dynex card reader to access files on a 4GB SDHC card, as well as on 512MB and 16MB CompactFlash cards. There is a problem when I format CompactFlash cards, though: A formatted card pops up a "Disk_Warning!" window every time it is inserted, that says "Volume exceeds end of disk! Data loss may occur when writing!". The CompactFlash disks were formatted using FAT filesystem and maybe another filesystem would work OK.

I have some other USB devices that I haven't plugged in yet.

Thanks for the welcome!

@Antique

Mostly I have worked on process control and plant management software that runs on Windows. Currently I'm working with some embedded devices.

@Snuffy

My first temptation might be a GUI-based Subversion client, something like TortoiseSVN. I would really like to have a tool like that on Amiga.

I have also written some device simulators at work so I'd like to try my hand at writing an 8-bit computer emulator. Preferably one for a platform that isn't already adequately covered for AmigaOS4.x, but that I have access to for testing.

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking here for quite some time. I finally decided that it would be nice to be able to participate sometimes instead of only reading. I've been a member of some other Amiga boards for a while so some of you may recognize my handle.

I have a 667MHz Sam440ep, plus various classic Amigas. I work as a software developer on other platforms but unfortunately have never done anything significant on Amiga. I think maybe it'll stay that way because Amiga is my home OS and I like to keep it fun and not at all like work, though I keep being tempted to start.

I probably won't be terribly active here (I'm not elsewhere) but I'll pop in and post from time to time.
