I have to apologize. I just checked my SAM460 and indeed printer-prefs point to lpr.device BUT I had to put PAR from storage into devs/dosdrivers in order to get it working.
On the X-1000 I have everything as stated above

On my Sam 460 I had to do the remapping and to mount par: (including parallel.device). Else I could only print one page befor getting a full crash.
In Printer Prefs I have (both X-1000 and SAM) :

postscript, directing to parallel.device, port 0
(I think on SAM it is a1parallel.device or something like this)

In the postscript preferences, I had to select Direct printing

(I am not sure for the exact wording, as I use the french locale)

Using lpr.device with redirecting from parallel.device (not using lpr.device directly)

Yes, with alt-j I get an umlaut on the right letters, thanks, but the dead-key for umlaut doesn't work.
In leafpad, acute accents work correctly

alt-k works amiga-side (notepad) but not cygnix side (leafpad)

Yes, I can confirm that " (umlaut) doesn't work with any other key, only with standalone keys like you find in Swiss and German keyboards :
ö ä ü. But if I want ë (like in French Noël for Christmas), it doesn't work because I have to hit first the umlaut key (which is NOT an ALT key) and then the vowel.
It doesn't work neither with the new leifpad.

Ah and also ' (standalone acute accent) doesn't get appended onto the appropriate vowel, like ó or ú ...

Now â (for instance) works, even in Abiword. But there is still a problem with " : I use a swiss keyboard and the combo " + a doesn't give ä but å. Other combos of umlaut don't give anything (happily, my keybord has ö ü ä accessed directly).

In fact I think that AmiCygnix uses the WB driver

But at the moment you can't buy an X1000

I use it with the latest updates and the photosmart driver, no problems...

Google docs/drive works fine here
