Strange, I don't see any flame war after this line, perhaps amigans have finally seen how lack Reaction is? :)

No one said ReAction was perfect. Anyone who actually _has_ programmed software using RA will know of its shortcomings. And this is what this thread is for: identifying RA's weakest spots so that they could possibly be remedied in future updates. We're discussing things from the technical and user point of view. No need for flame wars.

If I buy Pagestream 5.0 for OS4 do I get 4.1 as well?

If you buy PgS 5 for OS4, you also get an older release for this system (PgS 4.1.8.3). You should also be able to download PgS for 68K: version 4.1.5.6, and the non-functional 5.0.4.46 alpha. At least this was the case when I bought version 5 for OS4 earlier this year.

Quote:

How well does 5.0 run on OS4.1?

It's nothing to write home about. The current OS4 version, 5.0.3.3, is more than three years old, and is nowhere near the current Windows version. You'd probably be better off using PgS 4.1.5.6 for 68K, which runs fine emulated on OS4.

Quote:

Is it still being actively developed for OS4.1?

Yes, both Amiga versions (PPC and 68K) should now be in focus, at least that's what we were told. But the development takes ages because of certain life circumstances the programmer got into.

Yes, there are a few awkward things in the AmigaOS UI. Let's do away with them, leaving the past where it belongs: in the past.

menus are not strictly part of reaction.

More precisely, menus are currently not handled by ReAction at all, apart from RA being able to process WMHI_MENUPICK messages.

Quote:

That doesn't mean I think a reaction wrapper for menus is a bad idea though.

At least it's a way to improve how menus are created and handled, without having to wait for a completely new menu system.

resizing from any border should be default, IMHO.

Sure thing. Configurable from the GUI settings, though. So that those who say this is an un-Amigan feature can switch it off.

I believe that the button, while not necessary, would be a familiar "thing" for new comers.

That's exactly the way of thinking we should adopt when discussing further OS updates. Long years in Amigaworld will make you think a certain way - such as, "when I need to create a new drawer in a filerequester, I go to the menu". Now, a person never kissed by AmigaOS before will don't even EXPECT a menu in a filerequester!

In other words, the fact that we Amigans do certain things a certain way does not necessarily mean that we do it the right (= intuitive) way. As the developments in other OSes show, users' approach to computer interfaces has changed, while AmigaOS has not. Certain UI techniques and metaphors simply show their age.

As for Daedalus' comment: there is really no need for clutter if the requester is designed properly. By the way, have you noticed that in the current ASL filerequester, the buttons "Volumes" and "Parent" are in line with "OK" and "Cancel" buttons, contrary to the logic of proper GUI design? The buttons refer to different types of function so they should be neither grouped together nor put in the same place.

What is missing from ReAction?

The texteditor.gadget is rather underdeveloped and underdocumented. It's really painful to use it for tasks other than just putting some plain text in it.

Listbrowser.gadget sorely lacks drag and drop. Plus, automatic key navigation should be standard: so that you can browse through the listbrowser items using cursor keys - currently, you have to program this behaviour yourself.

There is a bug in speedbar.gadget (reported by centaurZ and me at utilitybase.com). The gadget area does not redraw properly upon GA_Disabled tag changes (even when using RefreshSetGadgetAttrs).

Certain programs could benefit from the existence of a rotary encoder gadget class (MUI has had it for years!). It's actually a variant of the slider but takes up less space and looks more natural for certain operations (think of a virtual synth program).

Certain classes lack documentation completely: center.gadget, thumblist.gadget.

A menu.class wrapping around the current Intuition menus would probably not mean a revolution in the menu system but could definitely make a programmer's life easier. See my project submission at http://www.openamiga.org/?function=viewproject&projectid=55

Cool! Glad to hear that!

1), however, hasn't, and I don't personally think it's the correct place for a button with this functionality. As it's a filerequester, it's primary role is to select files. General file handling has been added just for convenience, but to put it in the main interface is wrong IMO.

If you look at other OSes, a Create Drawer button is commonly found in file requesters. Surely there is a reason why the OS designers do that?

ASL requester improvement

Just can't stay away

It's already been discussed that the ASL filerequester is a bit of a blast from the past in OS4. I don't hold my breath for a complete rehaul any time soon but I guess two small improvements would not be hard to implement:

1. Putting a Create Drawer button in the requester area (not just in the menu).
2. Highlighting the text "Rename_Me" when you create a new drawer. You want to enter a new name and will replace the text anyway, so why not make the user's life easier?

When upgrading OWB, I always delete the entire previous installation, including the cookie database. My experience with OWB is similar to yours. I did have crashes with Google search but this is now fixed as of 3.20. Thanks Joerg, another small donation from me will follow soonish

But IE's or Mozilla's fonts look more clear than OWB.

The quality of font display on lower-resolution devices (referred to as "hinting") is usually system-dependent (or application-dependent, if the app uses its own font display routines). If you use the same TTF fonts in PageStream for Amiga and then in PageStream for Windows, you'll surely notice a difference.

Does anyone have a list of TT fonts that IE7 and Mozilla uses as default ?

Favicons are .ico files that are part of the web contents. You don't need to create them - unless you of course want to design your own favicons for your own website. The freeware IrfanView, on Windows, can save in the .ico format among others.

I would add that 7 years after the first PPC motherboards are out, people still asks for support on 68k

It is everyone's choice to use either 68K/OS3 or PPC/OS4. Choose freely whichever you prefer but remember that choosing a platform naturally means taking sides. So if you decide to stay in the past (with OS3) you may as well find yourself left in the past: without new software being available to you.
