Re: New ATI drivers?

@Hans

Nice work!

Once the SAM 440EP flex version is out (the one without onboard gfx) this project will become even more important. These cards will kick the 9250's @ss.

Folks - this is a worthwhile project. Hans has a paypal donation page. Hint.

@Hans

Very nice. Just getting to the point you are at now is a good first step.

Having a look here at the ATI cards reference: Wikipedia ATI GPU comparison

Will any of the R5xx/R6xx cards on AGP 8x work, or are we stuck with PCI?

Would you be interested in any donations of similar cards to round out your R5xx/R6xx collection? I'm thinking RV516-based X1550 and/or RV610-based XT2400 PRO if we are limited to PCI.

Thanks

@Rogue

Thanks for your speedy answers.

All great features. The auto-expunge is very nice. I presume it required the improved notification system.

These DOS updates alone would make a nice release.

Cheers!

Nice work Hyperion team!! 4.1 sounds very nice indeed.

Of course, the inevitable question...

Can someone explain this a bit more for me:

> New and improved DOS functionality
...... full 64 bit support
...... universal notification support
...... automatic expunge and reload of updated disk resources

What does "full" 64-bit support mean?
What does universal notification mean?
Auto expunge and reload of resources - same idea.

I can make an intelligent guess but someone must have some insight.

Thanks

I must say after visiting the forums at www.natami.net my impressions of the project team went up significantly. Gunnar von Boehn seems to have a very thorough understanding of what needs doing and the advantages/disadvantages to various approaches to an issue.

They are developing what I would probably call an Amiga 5000. This is what you might expect to come out of C= after the A4000. This includes better graphics (including rudimentary 3D support), better sound, better CPU, improved system throughput, built-in scan doubler, etc...

The best part is that in the long run this functionality sounds like it will be condensed down to not a lot of chips - similar to the Minimig but not quite that simple.

My hat's off to these folks - if they can see it through it will be a kick-ass system. The next-gen things they are discussing, such as a custom N68070 CPU (next-generation 68040/68060) and possible SIMD extensions sound quite interesting.

More power to them.

Re: OpenGL on OS4?

@Thread

OK, now I'm getting confused (not difficult).

In the past the following systems have been discussed:

- Cairo
- AGG
- OpenGL

What direction is Hyperion leaning towards on the graphics API?

How would each of these systems be supported?

Which API would be the "bare metal layer" just before calling the graphic card drivers?

Which API would be exposed to Joe Q. Programmer?

Thanks

@Swoop

Hey this has been a good thread. Don't apologize in the slightest.

I learned something new - I thought you could only make assigns to a path.

As it turns out you can make an assign to a file as well. Very interesting, but slightly twisted.

Sounds like WoW on 64bit windows. It lets you run 32bit applications in their own environment. It makes infinite sense.

There appear to be many challenges to get the maximum benefit out of the current API (i.e. memory protection, address spaces, multi-CPU support, etc...). The time may be better spent coming up with a better API than trying to retrofit the old API and breaking applications in the process.

Sounds like a lot of work. Planning to sleep anytime soon?

Re: Amiga: I don't know what to think anymore!!

@all

The shame in all this is the fact that way back when the "new/original" Amiga Inc. came online they were apparently dumping/sidelining OS 3.9+ in favour of the whole Amiga DE environment.

It seemed quite silly to bring up an unknown product from nothing when you had something quite valuable and compact with an existing software base ready to go. I was among those shaking their heads and thinking "WTF?? You have a great OS already!".

Now fast-forward a few years and it appears the whole TAO/Amiga DE thing is a flop for numerous reasons, and yes some of them out of A-Inc's control. It was too big a risk for such a young, immature company.

Finally there is something apparently happening behind the scenes that has motivated A-Inc enough to snap out of their hypnotic state and actually leverage their Amiga IP. Oh the horror of it all!

At least this is finally forcing the A-Inc driven push to forge ahead with Amiga OS. Too bad this is a few years down the road and with things in a bigger mess than ever.

However this latest push, if legitimate, is probably the best thing for OS4+. Hyperion was running on a shoestring without any obvious large customers. It seems that may no longer be the case.

It shall be interesting to see how things play out in the courts.

P.S. I have no idea why A-Inc is busy screwing around with $4.99 software on their website. There is no money to be made here. Surely this is a huge waste of time with bigger fish to fry?

Re: Experiences with A1 XE and Memory DIMMs

@poweramiga

I have the 256MB CL2 version of that DIMM.

The chips are MT 48LC32M4A2-7E B.

I had loaned out a pair of IBM 512MB ECC registered DIMMs to Atheist but couldn't get a coherent answer out of him on IRC.

Is this info remotely useful to anyone?? I'm tired - off to be for me.... :)

@tonyw

I think the trick with getting pairs of DIMMs to work is to be sure to use "Registered" DIMMs. It is my understanding that these have more buffering and present less of a load to the memory controller.

I loaned a pair to Atheist at our local Vancouver user group and haven't heard back if he got them working together. I will have to torture him on IRC to see what the deal is.

The registered DIMMs have some extra chips between the edge connector and the memory chips themselves. They are a bit "taller" than non-registered DIMMs.

The ECC registered DIMMs that I have here are a CT32M72S4R7E. These are Crucial 256MB ECC CL2 chips. I have the memory but no motherboard. Wanted an XE but never had the $$ when they were out.

Hey guys sorry about the delay on the TA mailing. I had a health issue to deal with.

The mags were posted on the weekend and should be showing up very soon in a mailbox near you.
