Too cheap imho. Might lack quality (seriously, been there, cost me 60GBP to send the mobo to Eyetech and back to discover faulty PSU that could power some older PCs but not P4 ones and A1).

Good if it's solved. Just from experience:

Take Your HD for a run in a (sadly) PC. Then try back.
I had to change mine but in a shop it worked. Well, buyed a bigger one and it Rocks!

Thanks for Boogie for that!

Oops, didn't read all, This A1 has a 340 W Max Supply and works well. Just gave an 200W for free for a friend and he told me that it is not enough for the graphics card and the pc. Sil-Card here works like a charm too.

@Snuffy

And a month later... Again HDD Corrupted !
And a few other problems occured (with not always the same error message)...

I change AGAIN the battery and it seems to work a bit better as I managed to boot the Amiga... But after a short while it froze with various HDD Corruption -- 2 HDD.... Always the same having the errors !

I wonder now if the Power Supply is not becoming a bit "weak"... It's an OLD 300 W ATX Power Supply.

Can I change it to a new ATX 350W Power Supply like this one ?
Is there any consideration I need to be aware off ?

Thanks.

@Jack

OK. Upon investigation I have discovered that if I tried to "bounce around" the screenshots, I'd get that same error, but if I advanced through them in order (even clicking on each screenshot icon at the bottom of the page) I would get the intended page (with the bizarre exception of the last page, which initially got me a Lexus ad instead of the screenshot on the review page until I re-clicked the page's icon in the bottom right, at which point I got the correct screenshot). It seems each screenshot is accompanied by a two or three paragraph historical review of the title whose screenshot you are looking at. Just start at the "A500 screenshot" page and advance through them one by one (I am using SeaMonkey, by the way).

This article seems to have been done by a lover of Amiga gaming.

A small bug

I have recently been running the exellent looking chrome bolts theme and have come across a small bug. When a narrow window opens the system freezes trying to fit all the bolts on. An example is when loading ArtEffect and the tool bar opens.
I was just wondering whether anybody else has had simular problems with this or any other elaborate themes?

@thread

Dunno if it matters at all, the hardware should be compatible.
Nothing special at the UBoot resolution either and PS2 is
plain peecee PS2, so i think every KVM should do!?

Can't see most of the reviews, is it me or their problems? (using Seamonkey, get "We're sorry, but the page you requested cannot be displayed due to a web server error." error, even on the "let us know" link

Hi all,

If this was covered b4, plz point me to the correct thread.

If not:
Are there any issues I should be aware when getting an KVM switch for use with A1 and PC? (UBoot support? powered vs non-powered? other considerations?)
Mouse and kbd are ps2 ones.
PC runs Linux btw.

TIA,
Jack

It depends on how the caches are filled (afaik), usually the speed test is better when performed immediately after the previous test.
After all it does some repeated actions and instruction cache should have significant influence on this.
What puzzled me in your sysinfo screenshot is that reported speed is 51.8 MHz. Dunno if it is normal. Others should confirm the issue (I have 060)

My Swedish is non-existent.

Translations are always difficult.

I would be appreciate your own impression on this discussion. A summing up of what you think Rogues comments might mean.

It is often such impressions which convey precise meaning rather an translations (there are a couple of comments, that either because of translation or technical reference I did not quite understand).

I take it the date is very recent?

[21:29] Alkaron: and your thoughts on that?
[21:29] Rogue: Alkaron: Would make a nice couple
[21:30] Alkaron: what you call that... a cliffhanger.? ;)
[21:30] Alkaron: Rogue: just yes or no ;)
[21:30] Rogue: I prefer Kosh type answer *coughs*
[21:30] Alkaron: hehe

Re: PS3 port of AOS4?

@magic & @Severin

I apologise, this thread was my first on the forum, and obviously I did not look well enough for any similar threads here.

However, as the only console mentioned by both Hyperion and Amiga Inc for a potential port,and a console that the Freidans at least seemed excited with the idea of writing code for it, such discussions do have a place on Amiga forums.

Plus Sony was at least talking to Amiga Inc, in financial terms some years back. I doubt if funds would be made available now, but a nexus already exists.

As a market, there is nothing to compare to the PS3 for our OS, everywhere else it would be a hack, but anyone owning a PS3 can install AOS on it - in fact it was the least hassle install of Linux I have ever experienced.

You can ignore the thread afterall.

@Helge

It is true that a PS3 port would mean slightly smaller SAM sales in the Community as it now is. And buying both is not a solution. However, the community is such a small market it could not be profitable in any case, and its growth without some other strategy would be slow and unhealthy commercial-wise.

Consider the other side of the coin.

PS3 owners, who end up liking AOS4 as a computing solution and then go to buy a desktop SAM.

This would be many times greater than the small number of potential community members who opted instead for a PS3.

Plus PS3 can never support what a desktop solution could, except of course if the SAM acted as a domestic service server and the PS3 became a processing hub.

The few thousand community members is a marketing joke, no-doubt available HW would rapidly increase it, bringing many back who have drifted away. But no matter which way it is counted, a few thousand is not a market, and that will kill SAM more than anything.

You have to consider a market that is 3 million now, and probably 10 million by the end of the year. A market which in October will have its own free marketing space (PS Home).

0.1% = 10,000 sales of 10 Million owners, 100,000 if it manages just 1%. I would put 10% as the probable conservative penetration give one year (and probably a much bigger PS3 market) . 1,000,000 OS4's.

I suggest that it is reasonable to assume that 20% of PS3 owners will in the end have one otherOS running on their machines. I would suggest this is a very conservative estimate because the largest number of PS3 owners will be kids still doing school, and hence a natural gravitation to loading an otherOS for school work if nothing else.

I also think the PS3 market will grow as parents become aware that they can also give their kids a full working computer easily along with the games. And hence it is a much more educationally sound investment.

As the price over the years comes down. The PS3 is also likely to be a good choice as a home computer.

As the PS3 gets outdated, it will find markets in third world countries, probably more as a computer than as a games console.

There is great significance in what Sony is doing here., we would be very stupid to miss the boat - especially as OS4 fits the console much better than Linux ever could.

The X11 server, may ironically, be a better form of Linux than Linux itself is for many uses.

Bundling OS4 up as a light Linux is not such a bad idea, and there is another market that has nothing much to do with the PS3 but would be opened up if PS3 provided the greater market to spur even just porting, let alone more native apps.

Yeah needs more testing before I give up and stick with my RAM board. I am going to order a heavy duty 145W Amiga PSU from AmigaKit anyway just to take some pressure of the A500 PSU and work from there.

Might have spoken a bit soon..... well it runs ok but there are sporadic crashes. I have tried with the trapdoor cover off in case it was heat but no joy.

I am thinking of selling it on to someone who can make better use of it. Unless someone can think of something simple I could try.

I don't want to buy a PSU with a noisy fan and don't really have the motivation to modify a silent PC power supply. I wish someone like Individual Computers would make a beefy silent PSU for the classic desktop (and even big box) Amigas.

How frequent are the crashes ?(measuring from reboot)

1. try to lift the a1200 case a bit (couple of books) and make sure there's some ventilation around. Maybe a fan. (if this helps then it was an overheating)

2. Try to disable all wbstartup stuff and if there're no craches --- bring'm back one by one.

3. The following might rule out the lack of power:
leave the mobo+blizzard combination only, no extra ram, no hd. Boot from floppy into wb.
