Thanks, guys.

I haven't had a Linux system since my A1 died. Part of my wild idea for this USB drive was to see if maybe I could install Linux on it somehow.

Running Media Toolbox didn't work--first thing I tried, of course--because Media Toolbox didn't recognize the drive and list it under "Select device."

It happens I do have access to a (ugh!) windows machine, so I booted it up, wondering how to find HPUSBFW.EXE. Would it be on the computer, or would I have to download it from the internet?

Turned out, no need! The laptop recognized the drive and offered to fix it for me. I accepted, and later reformatted it on my SAM460.

Back to experimenting (a little more carefully). I wonder where I can find documentation for Media Toolbox; there's nothing in System:Documentation about it on this machine.

Anyway, thanks again!

Killed thumb drive?

Yesterday I bought a new SanDisk 32 GB USB Flash Drive to experiment with.

Messed around with it (as DH6) in Media Toolbox, hoping for one thing to find a way to get rid of all the software that came in it. At one point I was warned that if I went ahead with what I was doing I would lose all the data on the drive. Well, that was sort of what I wanted, and I assumed that I would be able to replace anything I wanted.

Oops! It is no longer recognized as something that can be read and written. When I plug it in, I get the usual little window about a "USB Attachment," and it recognizes that the vendor is SanDisk, but no icon on Workbench, no listing under Drives.

I suppose that means I have turned it permanently into a piece of junk, but the fact that USB Inspector shows it as follows, and usb.log acknowledges it (see further below) as "successfully added" and "initialized" makes me think that maybe there is some hope for recovering its proper functionality:

Any ideas? Or should I just chuck it?

I just noticed that AmiCygnix/Software contains

Gimp-2.4.7 Dir ----rwed 09-Apr-11 17:58:27
and
Gimp-2.6.11 Dir ----rwed 09-Apr-12 11:50:58

But Gimp-2.6.11/ contains nothing but .info files. Is that the way it should be? Shouldn't I be able to actually run 2.6?

My gmail.hawaii.edu account seems rather more limited in settings ("Contact your site administrator") than my gmail proper, which for some reason I can't seem to get into today ("Your browser is no longer supported. Download Chrome").

I could change ISP, I suppose, but after over 30 years of being mathias@hawaii.edu, I hate the thought of changing.

But if nothing else works, I may get back to you. Thanks.

Re: Sylpheed stealing e-mail

The IMAP thing sounded worth checking into. But there doesn't seem to be a way to make Sylpheed retrieve mail with it, and I also seem to remember being instructed to use POP3 when hawaii.edu switch to gmail.

Someone else told me about "recent mode" this morning, and I took a look. But it seems the opposite of what I really want to do, which is delete junk mail without having to go to OWB to do it (a second time, as it were).

What I need to find out is whether gmail, set to delete downloaded mail, will still really keep mail YAM tells it to "Leave." And then does it delete mail as soon as I read it at the gmail site?

I think I may have a safe way to find out. If so, then all I need to do is turn Sylpheed's mail reader off. I use it mainly for Usenet anyway.

Sylpheed stealing e-mail
Just popping in
Just popping in

I use YAM to get e-mail that I want to save on my desktop.

If I forget to do so before I launch Sylpheed, Sylpheed gets any mail that YAM hasn't seen yet, and then it is hidden from YAM!

"Remove messages from server when received" in Configuration is unchecked, and in fact when I look on the gmail account that has taken over the duty of server, the messages are still there.

This is another side of a problem that has nothing to do with AmiCygnix, but I'll mention it: until my e-mail ISP was moved to Google, I would delete junk mail by marking it "Delete only" in YAM, before downloading. I still mark it that way, but nothing gets deleted; I have to log into the g-mail account and dlete what I don't want by hand.

I will now have to go to g-mail and forward anything I want in YAM to myself and then run YAM again.

If I understood what the heck is going on, would I be able to fix it?

Re: USB devices that work with OS4.1 Update 5

HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One.

Probably no surprise given the working HP printers already listed, and it's probably a safe bet that some others in this range would also work, using the HP_PhotoSmart driver on OS4Depot. Well, maybe not the 8600 -- you have to set up a wireless network via the Windows (or Mac) install CD, and apparently it can't be connected by USB or wired LAN. With the 6700 you can set up the wireless from the printer itself, and just plugging in a USB cable from the computer works fine.

It's not 100%. Scan-to-(Amiga)computer doesn't work, but scan to thumb drive and up-load to Amiga is a reasonable work-around. I was very careful to buy a printer with automatic duplexing, but the driver in question won't handle that, so a bit of a waste of money, for now anyway. I haven't found a work-around for this -- AmiGS, asked for duplex, prints one page of a batch, then says to turn it over and click "Continue" to get the other side. Then it prints the next front page, but doesn't allow turning again and the printer just sits there, "Now printing." (I haven't quite given up yet.)

I had originally bought a much-more-expensive HP M451dn as what looked like the perfect replacement for my broken 2605dn. However, the manual said not to hook up a USB cable until the Windows installation software said to, and the return policy was "unopened condition," so I returned the printer without trying it.

A couple AbiWord oddities?
Just popping in
Just popping in

I had to buy a new printer, and unable to find another PostScript capable one that I was sure would work on an OS4 machine, I settled for one that would run with the HP_Photosmart driver for PCL 3 on OS4Depot.

The new printer is supposed to handle (by ePrint, if not by USB as well) Microsoft Word documents, so I tried writing a short text with a variety of fonts and font sizes, etc., on AbiWord and saving it as a .doc file. When I tried to print it, I got an error message informing me that it was not, in fact, a Word file, but probably RTF. Indeed the .doc file begins "{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0." Now that's odd!

Oddity #2: Discouraged, I tried printing the .abw file, but my choices were to turn it into PDF or print to "Generic Postscript." It is my misfortune to have a printer now that doesn't do PostScript, but I was curious to see what kind of error message I would get, so I tried the latter option. And the thing printed almost exactly as I had typed it! The only thing different from what was on screen was that what I had italicized printed out straight up and down ('<c props="font-style:italic">to italics, </c>' doesn't work on the printer), but fonts and colors and sizes were preserved. Isn't that odd?

Strange slowdown in Sylpheed
Just popping in
Just popping in

I use Sylpheed to keep up with my newsgroups. I like to open the list of messages full page and go through it clicking on the orange envelope icons showing unread posts to make them "read" if I'm not interested in the subject.

Until fairly recently, a few weeks before the AmiCygnix upgrade, clicking would have an immediate effect, but then it suddenly slowed down, so it takes five seconds for the icon to vanish. Thgis has continued since the upgrade.

In order to time the event, I just checked again. The icons in some groups disappear immediately after all. The group where it takes five seconds claims to contain 25,000 posts (all but a half dozen read). Does that have anything to do with the slowness, and can I do anything about it?

Ignore this! (It's only here because I don't know how to delete it.)

Sorry! After repeated attempts to run xscanimage brought me a "Device busy" complaint, I spent much time composing what follows (I'll leave it so people who don't ignore it will know what they were supposed to ignore). After posting I made one last attempt, knowing it would fail, and all of a sudden the scanner worked!

_______________________________________________
Back in September I started a thread that I tried to reuse, but that didn't work, because editing my original post didn't turn it into a new one. I reported that my HP ScanJet 4300C flatbed scanner had suddenly quit working, and that usb.log hinted at a problem:

I: [10:19:32] hub.usbfd | HUB | Device found on port 6 of hub "".
I: [10:19:32] hub.usbfd | Hub port | Device at port 6 of hub "" is full-speed.

W: [10:19:32] USB FD fkt start | FD launcher | Could not bind any suitable interface driver for fkt 0x5fe0abf0

I got the suggestions from Chris and Ed, basically that I might be missing libusb.library, and sure enough when I copied one over from my AmigaOne disk to my SAM460 I was able to scan again.

New problem, slightly different. Xscanimage gives me a Select device requester, but when I select the appropriate one, I get "Failed to open device 'niash:libusb:03f0:0305': Device busy." I should probably mention that I upgraded AmiCygnix yesterday.

I reread this thread, noticed that I needed libusb.library version 0.1.12 and checked mine. It came out "0.1" so I thought "Aha!" and got one listed as 0.1.12 from OS4 depot. But it is the same one, and C:Version says "0.1."

I missed the "niash" thing when I first launched xscanimage and accidentally selected "test:0" which brought up what looked like the scanner, but it doesn't scan. Later I tried "test:1" as well. Same result; both pretend to scan solid black, white, or checkerboard images. I can't imagine why.

But later I noticed in Amicygnix:Home/root/.sane that I have three .ppm files, two "preview"ing test_0 and test_1, dated today, and one "preview-niash:libusb:03f0:0305.ppm" dated 2009-12-24!

I hope someone will be able to help me again.

Yes, I have used it in OS4 ever since AmiCygnix came out, first on my now-
deceased A1, now on my SAM460.

Sorry, I thought I had brought this device up when you first started the thread, but no sign of such a message in my profile, so, wrong again! Anyway, it's not the sort of thing one is likely to have, unless passed down from a previous owner, as in my case.

I notice that HP ScanJet 4300C is not listed. Because it's so old? Because it requires AmiCygnix?

Thanks, Chris and Ed

I knew/hoped it would be something like that. I copied libusb.library off my old A1 harddrive, and now the scanner works fine!

I wish I could have figured it out for myself. I have all kinds of Libs: files on the old A1 disk that I don't have on the SAM. I often wonder if some of them might make things work better if I had them on the SAM, but I'm more afraid they might muck something up good (= bad).

Ouch!

"Try saving to a different location."

This was an attempt to download with savefrom.net while in TimberWolf, which I was surprised to see trying to run the video itself! It would have taken hours at the rate it was going, though.

It did do the download, and I thought maybe it was working for a change, but now I know the crucial difference between "download" and "save."

Why does TimberWolf Download insist on starting names with a colon?

Is this standard for RC2, or is something special going on in my system?
